Most sun bears have short, black hair, though some are more reddish or grayer in color. Most of these bears have a V-shaped area of light hair under their necks, which is different in color from cream to yellowish-brown. These bears don’t get their name because they love to work with this color of hair. Nor are they called sun bears because of their sunny disposition (性情). Instead, their name comes from the V-shaped part under their necks, which is commonly yellowish in color. The part looks a bit like a rising sun.
Of all the kinds of bears, sun bears are the smallest. They are just 47 to 59 inches long. Though small, they have a very long tongue (舌头). The tongue is 8 to 10 inches long. Why such a long tongue? Long tongues are really useful when they are trying to reach the food deep down in a piece of wood or catching other insects (昆虫), or when they are trying to clean every bit of honey they have found.
Sun bears are very dependent upon feeding on bees and honey. Insects make up a large part of their diet, and they commonly feed on ants and young insects. Fruits and nuts also make up a part of some meals, and they like figs (a soft sweet fruit) very much. In some areas, fruits make up nearly half of the bears’ diet. When given the chance, they will also find birds, turtles, eggs, and deer for food.
Unlike some other kinds of bears, sun bears are active all year round. Food can be found all the time in rain forests, so they don’t need to fall into a deep sleep to spend the whole winter. Sadly, today people cut down rain forests for wood, or to make room for agricultural (农业的) development, making the number of living places suitable for sun bears less. At the same time, some people catch the bears to sell their coats and other body parts on the black market.

Many people are buying goldfish home, while many people are setting goldfish free. One survey of people in Texas found that nearly 60% fish owners put their fish into lakes.
Goldfish can grow very large. As a result, the number grows quite quickly, and there is not enough food for the rest of the fish in the lake. Such is the case in West Medical Lake.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife says that it can cost up to $150,000 to take away the foreign species(物种)from the lake. It’s such a serious problem that they are considering making setting goldfish free into the wild a crime(犯罪)and prosecuting(起诉)those responsible(有责任的).
“If they get caught doing that and get prosecuted, they could have to pay for solving the problem they created,” said Randy Osborne, a fish biologist from the department.
So what should you do if you no longer want your pet fish? Well, if you can’t find a willing friend or family member to help care for them, call your local pet shop or animal shelter. You might also join a goldfish club in your town or on Face book, if your fish are ill, do not put these sick fish into the wild or throw them into your toilet. “A sick fish can introduce harmful things like the disease into water,” wrote Pet Helpful, a website sharing knowledge on pets. “Keeping our waterways clean and safe is important for future generations(代).”

Walking sharks (鲨鱼)In 2006, scientists found a new kind of shark off the coast of Indonesia. It can “walk” with its fins along the coral reefs. These walking sharks are about 1 to 1.2 metres long. If they are surprised by something, they can swim away using their fins.
The platypus (鸭嘴兽)The platypus is found along the rivers and lakes of eastern Australia. It lays eggs like a bird, has webbed feet like a frog, a bill like a duck and is as poisonous as a snake! We are pleased to hear that it spends much of its life underground.
An unusual dolphinIn 2006, a Japanese fisherman caught an unusual dolphin. It has an extra set of fins (额外的一套鱼鳍) near its tail, about the size of human hands. Scientists say that its extra fins could be the remains of back legs. This tells us that dolphins were once four-footed land animals. Scientists believe that as they spent more and more time in the water, their back legs slowly disappeared (消失).

In 1994, a Japanese Masahiro Hara invented the Quick Response code(QR 二维码)as a way to increase the amount of information that could be stored on a paper label. Before this, one-dimensional(1D) barcodes had already been used since 1974 when the first barcode(条形码) was scanned in a supermarket in USA. The first barcodes consisted of two parts: the barcode and the 12-digit number. But the two-dimensional (2D) code made by Mr. Hara can hold as much as 7,000 digits or 4,000 characters of text, including all Japanese characters. Many books have QR codes on their back cover which provide information such as the price, the author and the publisher.
Around 2006, Wang Yue and his team developed the Hanxin Code which can also encode Chinese characters. Short Hanxin Code, instead of long Chinese names, are now widely printed on the large quantity of shoes on trucks and ships. In 2014, Wang Yue's company produced its first self-service QR code reader -- the Smart Box. Now it has become the most popular offline payment in China.
QR codes can be easily read with any mobile phone that has a camera. So they are now widely used in factories and supermarkets, on various tickets and restaurant cashier tables. On 14 February, 2020, a QR code called 'Health Code' is used in Hangzhou for people to quickly report their health status. Firstly, find an app named Alipay and scan the QR code included. Secondly, provide your name, phone number and ID number. Thirdly, answer some questions about your health status and whereabouts. Then you will get the 'Health Code' with different colour, green for "being healthy". Only with an updated green code, you may be allowed to enter or leave Hangzhou. On 21 February, 2020, a QR code is also used by Ms. Tang to inform her students about the course arrangement.

In fact, ▲ . That’s because touching changes their genes and, even worse, can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan of the La Trobe Institute in Australia gave an explanation. “The lightest touch from a human, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant.”
In order to test the idea, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as a result, the mitochondria (线粒体) in the plants had been partly hurt. The mitochondria are the “powerhouse of the cell”. The mitochondria produce energy for the rest of the cell in both animals and plants. If this “powerhouse” is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth. Whelan further explained, “If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by up to 30 percent.” According to Science Alert, repeated touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than others.
Although the touching does have a strong effect on plants, it’s not always bad. The researches believe, in some ways, it could be helpful. It may help plants fight against insects and bad weather. The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants’ reply to touching. And the research might also “open up new ways to optimize (优化) growth in the future.” Science Alert reported.

The ozone layer plays an important role in protecting living things on the earth. It is about 15 to 40 kilometers above the earth’s surface, and it prevents humans and the environment from harmful radiation(辐射).
The international groups were shocked after experts discovered a hole in the ozone layer in May 1985. Scientists had found that some chemicals ate away the earth’s ozone layer. Two years later, an international agreement called the Montreal Protocol(《蒙特利尔协议书》) was created to stop the use of those chemicals.
At the same time, the Montreal Protocol also has a positive influence on the fight against climate(气候) change. The depletion(损耗) of the ozone layer is not the main cause of climate change. But research is showing that these efforts to save the ozone layer can help deal with climate change. “Ozone action sets an example to climate action,” says World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. “Our success shows that we are able to and we have to control temperature increase.”
If everything goes well, the ozone player is expected to recover to 1980 levels by 2040, the U.N. says. __________ For example, the earth’s ozone layer above Antarctica(南极洲)is the thinnest. It will take time to fix the hole, maybe until 2066.
