Most sun bears have short, black hair, though some are more reddish or grayer in color. Most of these bears have a V-shaped area of light hair under their necks, which is different in color from cream to yellowish-brown. These bears don’t get their name because they love to work with this color of hair. Nor are they called sun bears because of their sunny disposition (性情). Instead, their name comes from the V-shaped part under their necks, which is commonly yellowish in color. The part looks a bit like a rising sun.

Of all the kinds of bears, sun bears are the smallest. They are just 47 to 59 inches long. Though small, they have a very long tongue (舌头). The tongue is 8 to 10 inches long. Why such a long tongue? Long tongues are really useful when they are trying to reach the food deep down in a piece of wood or catching other insects (昆虫), or when they are trying to clean every bit of honey they have found.

Sun bears are very dependent upon feeding on bees and honey. Insects make up a large part of their diet, and they commonly feed on ants and young insects. Fruits and nuts also make up a part of some meals, and they like figs (a soft sweet fruit) very much. In some areas, fruits make up nearly half of the bears’ diet. When given the chance, they will also find birds, turtles, eggs, and deer for food.

Unlike some other kinds of bears, sun bears are active all year round. Food can be found all the time in rain forests, so they don’t need to fall into a deep sleep to spend the whole winter. Sadly, today people cut down rain forests for wood, or to make room for agricultural (农业的) development, making the number of living places suitable for sun bears less. At the same time, some people catch the bears to sell their coats and other body parts on the black market.

A.They are friendly and lovely.
B.They love doing something in the sun.
C.Some of their hair feels as warm as the sun.

A.It’s mainly used to break down food.
B.It is the smallest of all kinds of bears’.
C.It greatly helps them search for food.
D.It reaches half of their body in length.
3. What can we know about sun bears from the last paragraph?
A.Humans often fail to find them in winter.
B.They are less seen on the black market now.
C.They are good at storing food for the winter.
D.Human activities have become a big danger to them.
4. What’s probably the writer’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To tell some facts about sun bears.
B.To call on people to protect natural resources.
C.To list the reasons for sun bears’ disappearance.
D.To show the relationship between humans and animals.

【推荐1】Goldfish have long been a popular family pet. However, there is a growing problem associated with these lovely fish.

Many people are buying goldfish home, while many people are setting goldfish free. One survey of people in Texas found that nearly 60% fish owners put their fish into lakes.

Goldfish can grow very large. As a result, the number grows quite quickly, and there is not enough food for the rest of the fish in the lake. Such is the case in West Medical Lake.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife says that it can cost up to $150,000 to take away the foreign species(物种)from the lake. It’s such a serious problem that they are considering making setting goldfish free into the wild a crime(犯罪)and prosecuting(起诉)those responsible(有责任的).

“If they get caught doing that and get prosecuted, they could have to pay for solving the problem they created,” said Randy Osborne, a fish biologist from the department.

So what should you do if you no longer want your pet fish? Well, if you can’t find a willing friend or family member to help care for them, call your local pet shop or animal shelter. You might also join a goldfish club in your town or on Face book, if your fish are ill, do not put these sick fish into the wild or throw them into your toilet. “A sick fish can introduce harmful things like the disease into water,” wrote Pet Helpful, a website sharing knowledge on pets. “Keeping our waterways clean and safe is important for future generations(代).”

【推荐2】Will you be worried if you see any of these animals on your way to school?

Walking sharks (鲨鱼)

In 2006, scientists found a new kind of shark off the coast of Indonesia. It can “walk” with its fins along the coral reefs. These walking sharks are about 1 to 1.2 metres long. If they are surprised by something, they can swim away using their fins.

The platypus (鸭嘴兽)

The platypus is found along the rivers and lakes of eastern Australia. It lays eggs like a bird, has webbed feet like a frog, a bill like a duck and is as poisonous as a snake! We are pleased to hear that it spends much of its life underground.

An unusual dolphin

In 2006, a Japanese fisherman caught an unusual dolphin. It has an extra set of fins (额外的一套鱼鳍) near its tail, about the size of human hands. Scientists say that its extra fins could be the remains of back legs. This tells us that dolphins were once four-footed land animals. Scientists believe that as they spent more and more time in the water, their back legs slowly disappeared (消失).
