When we are asleep, we need less air. We live in air, but we cannot see it. We can only feel it when it is moving. Moving air is called wind. How can we make air move? Here is one way. Beating the winter Blues
Does your mood (情绪) change with the seasons?
Some people find that when temperature goes down, so do their spirits. Those people sometimes feel sad for no reason. They eat more and put on weight. They have trouble sleeping. They can't think clearly. This is the winter blue.
Get out in the sun. Some experts say that the winter blues happen because we get less sunlight in winter than we do in other seasons. They say that the decrease (减少) in sunlight can make us feel bad.
Get some exercise. Taking a walk or doing some exercise will make chemicals (化学物质) called endorphins in your body. Endorphins are natural "feel good" chemicals.
Reduce stress. Cut back if you have to many things to do. Make sure you have some quiet time to yourself.

Talking Gloves
Four foreign students have created a pair of gloves, and it helps people to communicate with people who have hearing and speaking problems. The gloves are equipped with sensors (传感器). They recognize sign language and translate it into text on a smartphone. Then the smartphone changes the text to spoken words. Thus you can understand sign language easily.
Google Glasses
Google Glasses are like a computer built into a pair of glasses. Then the glasses allow you to surf the Internet and make calls without even lifting a finger. The glasses also have a camera and GPS mapping system. Users can take and share photos, check maps and surf the Internet just by looking up, down, left and right.
Indoor Clouds
That’s a real world. An artist, Smilde managed to create a small but perfect white cloud in the middle of a room using a fog machine. But it required careful planning — the temperature, humidity (湿度) and lighting all had to be just right. The cloud only lasted for a short while, though.
Wingsuits
The suit realizes your dream of flying like a bird. Well, not exactly flying, but gliding (滑翔) through the air. It increases the surface area of the human body, which makes it easier for people to float in the air. Fliers wearing wingsuits can glide one kilometer in about 30 seconds.

The best thing about traveling alone is that you can do what you want to do. No waiting around in places you aren’t interested in, no missing a bus because your friend was late, etc. This may sound selfish, but this is your experience. Your experience will be greatly improved by traveling alone. The main worry is loneliness, but believe me, it’s not difficult to talk to and meet people. Just remember everyone is in the same boat; everyone wants to meet new people, have fun and be friendly! There’s a problem of safety in some countries, especially for women traveling alone. You should always check the foreign office of your country for advice on safety. Buying a personal alarm is a good idea for women traveling alone.
Traveling with a friend does sound nice, but it depends on how well you get on. If you have similar interests or travel ideas, it should be wonderful. You will find it much cheaper to cook food in developed countries and share a room. However, a lot of people meet traveling together don’t seem to be having as much fun and often go their separate (各自的) ways.
Tours are great when they go well. Some of my best memories have been with tour groups. The key there is when they go well. A terrible tour guide, quiet group and terrible food can ruin (毁掉) your time. My advice would be never to do a tour that is too long except in countries with safety problems or poor transport.
All in all, traveling alone is the best, but it is good to mix it up. Invite a friend from home to meet you for a few weeks. Try a tour or two — some people love them — perhaps start with a day tour.

(1) Try to find out what you are worried about
Sometimes, you will know what you are worried about. Other times, you might not. Try to find it out first. If you can’t, you can ask for help.
(2) Think of ways to make it better
There is always something you can do to help you feel less worried. Sitting there worrying is no fun and it cannot help you. Grades at school are often top worries for kids. If you’re worried about grades, you can ask yourself these questions:
Why are grades important? What do grades mean to me? How do I get ready for class? Do I go over (复习) my notes even when there is no test? Do I have a good place to do my homework? Have I tried different ways of studying?
If your worry is about a fight with a friend, you might write down all the things you could do. For example, write a note to him or her, invite him or her to a basketball game, and say sorry to him or her.

Eskimos live near the North Pole. There are only two seasons there, winter and summer. There is no spring or autumn there. The winter nights are long. You can’t see the sun for more than two months, even at midday. The summer days are long. For more than two months, the sun never goes down and there’s no night.
Eskimos have warm clothes. They make their clothes from the skins(皮) of animals. From skins they make coats, caps and shoes. Near the North Pole trees can’t grow, for it is too cold there. The Eskimos have to make their houses from skins, snow or stones. When they go out in storms(暴风雪) and can’t get back home, they make houses of snow. A few years ago, scientists believed that the world had 400 billion (十亿) trees. However, a new study from Yale University shows that there are around three trillion trees. That’s a three followed by 12 zeroes. That means there are about 420 trees for everyone in the world today.
The bad news is that thousands of years ago, the earth had six trillion trees. Humans cut in half the number of trees on the planet. Take Europe for example, it was a large forest thousands of years ago. Now much of it is cities and towns. And another 15 billion trees are lost each year.
Dr. Thomas Crow is one of the scientists from Yale University. He said the new number of trees from their study would change nothing. “The study only shows there is much to do to protect our forests.” he said.
1. The passage is about a study of ________ in the world.A.the kind of trees | B.the number of trees | C.the change of trees | D.the importance of trees |
A.400 | B.12 | C.60 | D.420 |
A.many mountains | B.a large sea | C.a large forest | D.many cities and towns |
A.We still have enough trees to cut down. | B.We can find more trees in the future. |
C.We should do more to protect forests. | D.We should stop cutting trees down now. |
【推荐3】Scientists believe the Earth is 4.6 billion years old. However, the mountains, valleys (山谷), hills, rivers, deserts and forests we see today are much younger than that. For example, Mount Qomolangma is about 60 million years old and the Amazon rainforest is only 10 million years old. The youngest sea in the world is the Baltic Sea, at about 15,000 years old.
The Earth is always changing because of volcanoes (火山), earthquakes and of course, wind and rain. Some of these changes are very slow and others are quick. Water and ice can make very great changes to the planet. For example, glaciers (rivers of ice) can cut through mountains and make lakes and deep valleys. Many volcanoes are under the oceans and sometimes they become new islands. This is happening in the South Pacific, near Tonga.
It’s normal for our planet to change, but at the moment, scientists think it’s changing faster than usual. Some deserts are growing and many forests are getting smaller. The weather is getting wetter in some places and drier in others, and there are more big storms. According to the research, the sea level will continue to rise in the next hundred years. As a result, many cities will possibly be covered by water and much of the most productive farming areas will be lost. Some island countries are likely to disappear on the map of the world.
These changes will bring great harm to the planet. However, they can be beneficial to some people. For example, as the Arctic is getting warmer, some people in Greenland now own businesses and sell vegetables they grow on their land. That wasn’t possible in the far north 50 years ago. Farmers in Greenland like the warm weather and hope it will continue.
1. How does the writer describe the changes of the Earth in Paragraph 2?A.By giving examples. | B.By listing numbers. |
C.By telling stories. | D.By using sayings. |
A.The age of the Earth. | B.Problems for the planet. |
C.The life of the farmers. | D.Influences on the mountains. |
A.harmful | B.normal | C.helpful | D.uncomfortable |
