Cats don’t seem very friendly. Unlike dogs, cats don’t often play with people. However, a new study shows that cats like people just as much as dogs.

US researchers(研究者)invited 117 cat owners to take a six-minute test. They walked into a new room with their pets. After two minutes, they left the room. After another two minutes, they came back. About two-thirds of the cats came to greet their owners right away when they came back. The cats then went back to looking around the room, but still came back to their owners now and then.

The cats saw their owners as a source of security(安全的来源)in a new place. In the same test, 58 percent of dogs acted just like the cats.

Fun facts about cats
1. Cats spend 70 percent of their day sleeping. This means that a 9-year-old cat is awake for only three years. When awake, a cat will spend more than 30 percent of its time grooming(梳毛)itself.
2. Cats have good night vision(视力). They need just one-sixth of the amount(数量)of light that people need to see at night.
3. To cats, the colors red, orange and brown all look the same.

【推荐1】Yesterday I visited a museum. There I learn about a lot of amazing facts about man and animals. What interested me most were a talk and some stories about animals.

Do you know how much TV you watch in your life? In yesterday’s talk, the scientist said that a man watched TV for over 70,000 hours in his life. It means you sit in front of a TV for 8 years. Do you know how long your hair can be if you don’t cut it? The scientist said that it could be as long as 9 metres! Another amazing thing was that you said about 4,200 words a day. That means more than 100 million in your life!

I didn’t like camels before. I thought they were dirty and slow. But now I know they have some amazing abilities (能力). Camels can run over 15 metres per second (秒). And it’s amazing that they can keep walking for days without any food or drinks. Camels can help people in many ways. They can carry things for people.

In the past, I disliked some animals and thought they were dirty and lazy. But now, I find them interesting. Man should be kind to them. It will be great to study animals and do something for them. Let’s work hard to make the world a better place for both man and animals.

People in Britain talk a lot about the weather. The weather changes a lot in Britain.

People often think that Britain has got a wet climate(气候). In fact, some parts of Britain are very dry and sunny. But some parts of Britain get a lot of rain. The west is the wettest part, because it is closer to the Atlantic Ocean(大西洋). As clouds from the Atlantic Ocean move across the country, they drop most of their rain on the hills and mountains in the west.

In spring the weather starts to get warmer. The beginning of March is often very windy. April is famous for April showers. It rains, then it’s sunny and then it rains again.

The weather in summer is usually warm. The days are the longest in summer, and in the north of Scotland it never gets really dark.

Autumn usually starts with fine weather. Autumn is a very beautiful season, as the leaves turn yellow and red before they fall.

The weather in winter is usually cool and wet. It doesn’t snow a lot in Britain, so when it snows, it leads to travel problems. Roads, railways and airports are closed. Schools often close, too.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了一项发表在科学报告期刊上的关于解释狗的鼻子为何总是湿冷的研究。

【推荐3】Have you touched a cute dog recently? If that dog touches you with its nose, you may find how wet and cold it is. If dogs are so warm and fluffy (毛茸茸的), then why are their noses so cold?

Before, people thought that dogs had cold noses to help them control their body temperature. But, a new study has shown some interesting findings about dogs’ noses. The study finds that when the air temperature is 30℃, the tip of a dog’s nose is about five degrees cooler than the air. But why is this?

The researchers believe that the tip of a dog’s nose has a special sensory function (探测功能). So, they do an experiment to test it. The study shows that dogs can find weak heat sources—like a small animal—with their noses from 1.5 meters away.

The research team studies three dogs named Charlie, Delfi and Kevin. For the experiment, the dogs have to tell the difference between two objects. The two objects are heated to different temperatures. Amazingly, all three dogs are able to sense the temperature difference between both objects.

The study also finds that the heat from the objects in the experiment is too weak to be felt by human hands, even at very short distances. The dogs are able to sense these heated objects from a distance, but humans are only able to feel the warmth of the object if they touch it.

To know more about it, the research team also studies the brain activity of 13 dogs. When a warm object is put near their noses, there is an increase in brain activity.

“From the two complementary (互补的) experiments, we can know that dogs are indeed able to sense heat from warm-blooded animals, and a special region of the brain is made to be active by such heat.” said Anna Balint, the leader of the study.
