【推荐1】Long ago, the Yangtze River could only be crossed by boat. As time goes by, more and more bridges have been built and they contribute greatly to the development of China. However, no bridge is as incomparable as the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, for it is the first modern bridge designed and built by China without any foreign support.
Located in Nanjing, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge connects the city centre of Nanjing with the Pukou District. In 1956, with the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge still under construction（建设）, China made the decision to build the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. The bridge project began in 1960 and was open to traffic on December 29, 1968. The bridge is considered as an achievement of both engineering and bridge construction.
The bridge’s upper deck（层）is part of China National Highway 104, with 4589 meters in length and 15 meters in width, it allows 4 large cars to go side by side. Its lower deck, with a 6,772-meter-long railway, is an important part of the Beijing-Shanghai Railway. A 70-meter-high bridge tower stands on the ends of the bridge.
The bridge has brought great convenience for trains and vehicles. It carries about 80,000 vehicles and 190 trains per day, promoting（促进）economic development and people’s lives. More importantly, it still plays a key role in the national transportation network.
Considering the safety risk, a bridge-repairing project began in 2016, which cost over one billion Chinese yuan. After 27 months of repairing, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was open to traffic on December 29, 2018 on its 50 years’ birthday celebration.
