Zoe, Lydia and Lara were setting off on a girls’ trip. “I think I remembered everything. I got a compass(指南针) and sleeping bags,” said Zoe. “And Lydia and I made enough food for a week!” added Lara. Charlie saw his friends walking past his gate. “Hi girls! Hey, are you going on a trip? Can I come too?” he asked.
Zoe didn’t look very happy, but Lydia said in a friendly way, “Yes, of course you can. But hurry, we’re all ready to go!” “I thought this was going to be a girls’ trip.” Lara said. “But Charlie is our friend. We can go on our own another time!” said Lydia.
Charlie joined the girls and they all set off. They walked all day, talking and enjoying the fresh air. But Lara was still feeling unhappy. Suddenly, Zoe looked worried, “We were going to play by the river, but I can’t see it. Lydia, can you pass me the compass?” Lydia looked for the compass everywhere but she couldn’t find it. “What are we going to do?” asked Zoe nervously.
“Don’t be afraid!” said Charlie. “Do you see the moss(苔藓) on the trees? Well, it can only live in the shade(阴凉地), so it faces north. The river is to the south, so we need to go in the opposite direction(相反方向). Let’s go!”
Thanks to Charlie’s nature knowledge, the group got to the river before the sun set.

On Friday, Rosa asked Sam to go to her birthday party, but he wasn’t happy. He had only one dollar and that wasn’t enough to buy a gift. He knew he couldn’t ask Mom or Dad for any money — not this week!
“Well,” Sam thought, “I don’t have time to worry about this. I have a report (报告) to write and I need to go to the library.”
In the library, Sam found there was a book sale. A book got his attention. It was a cookbook (食谱) of Chinese food. With his last dollar, he bought the book. He thought Rosa might like because he often saw Chinese food in her lunch box.
The party on Saturday was a lot of fun. Rosa opened (打开) all the gifts and thanked everyone. When he opened Sam’s gift, she paused(停顿) and didn’t say anything. Sam wondered if she liked the book. When Sam got home, he got an e-mail from Rosa.
Dear Sam,

Our children and grandchildren, I’m afraid, will not be able to understand how our food is grown. Nor will they be able to experience the fun of fruit-picking.
I once spent a few weeks on a farm in New Zealand. There, I met about 50 apple-pickers from Vanuatu. At night, we listened to pop music and washed our clothes as they told me about their experiences of picking pineapples and peaches. Life on the farm was hard. The rooms were small and dark. There was nothing in them but a kettle(水壶) and a shower. However, the trip left me with many fond memories.
When my son was little, I used to cycle him half an hour out of town to a farm every few weeks. There, we could pick strawberries. He loved it. He was excited about the smell of the plants, the feel of the soil and the art of guessing which piece of fruit had the potential to be the most delicious. And he saw where our fruit came from. I wanted him to understand the effort and energy during the process of producing food.
Doorstep deliveries and washed and sliced(切好的) salad vegetables have already started to destroy our understanding of how our food is grown and what it looks like. Robotic fruit-pickers, I fear, will be just another step in this direction. I’m afraid that we are making the whole act of eating a hands-off experience. Where is, then, the fun of it?
