Henry was going through a very hard time. His wife just passed away. He felt that life without her was pointless. For months, Henry sat at his house, doing nothing. Henry’s neighbor, an old woman named Lisa, saw him from her yard one day. She had not seen him outside in days! She asked him to come closer to the fence next to her house.
“Hello, Henry! Just look at this fence. It is falling apart. You are a strong man. Can you help me fix this fence?” Lisa asked.
Henry was angry inside. He was the one who needed help. He thought the old lady was being kind of rude. But she was too old to fix the fence herself, so he agreed.
Henry worked on the fence for days. When he finished, she thanked him. Henry smiled for the first time in months.
“What a wonderful job! Could you please paint it for me?” Lisa said to him. Henry could not believe she was asking for more help. But because he respected her, he agreed. He worked hard painting the fence in the hot sun. As their neighbors passed by, they all told Henry what a beautiful job he had done. Henry felt very happy.

Davidson started “Bookcase for Every Child” project (项目) in his hometown of Conway, Arkansas, USA in 2005. The project provides low-income (低收入的) children with bookcases, and a starter set of books to encourage reading.
Davidson’s project is different from other projects. Instead of raising money from the public, he gets many people personally to take part in the project.
“We decided to build 50 bookcases each year and give them to low-income children,” said Davidson. “I can promise you this is the nicest piece of furniture (家具) in most of these low-income children’s homes.”
Today, the project has spread to eight communities (社区) in five states. He said the project’s early success belonged to the community members. “I knew a lot of people all over the community and was able to choose a group of people to do the job,” said Davidson. The group included members such as librarians and a workman.
Davidson’s love for the project grew deeper after his wife died in May, 2013. For him, spreading the bookcase project all over the country is the best way to remember her. And he hopes to have at least one project in every state in his country.

Someone’s car smells like wet dogs. Some kids get to eat desserts (甜点) for breakfast and some parents shout so much that all you try to do is to stay quiet and go unnoticed. When your mom or dad drives the carpool, your classmates get a close-up look at how strange your parents can be. It might be your first sociological (社会学) study and your first time to work with others.
Teamwork is really important in the carpool because nobody wants to make everyone else late. It’s a great lesson in responsibility. Imagine (想象) sitting in the car outside of a classmate’s house, watching the clock and counting the seconds. The poor little bird was left behind by his flock(鸟群). Clearly, he was too young to be able to survive on his own, placed him in a cardboard box with tea towels. I stayed up all night that day to research how to care for him.
The next day, he woke with his mouth wide-open to let out a sharp hunger call. I fed him termites(白蚁) and chirped(叽喳叫) at him. He chirped back, jumped into my hand and then fell asleep in my palm(掌心). To him, I was a mama bird.
For the next 84 days, the cute little thing lived on me. Wherever I went, he would fly alongside me. He would make short flights from my hand to my head and then slide(滑行) down from my long hair to hand to rest again. He went into hiding in my clothes while I learned his different calls. I never named him because he didn’t belong to me—I had to remind myself that he needed to return to the wild.
Almost three months later, he was stronger, more confident and flying farther from me. His flock returned to the grasslands. It was time for him to go. Before I flew back to England in November for the holiday season, I decided that the bird should be allowed outside to fly daily. I took him out to the flock three times. On the fourth day, the bird flew away with them.
When I returned in January, I would watch out for him whenever the finches(雀科小鸟) flew past. I still cry when I think of him. I wrote our story into a book, Fledgling. That, along with the lesson that any tiny animal can make a difference, will be his legacy(遗留的影响).
