①People use their mouths for many things. They eat, talk, shout and sing. In the English language, there are many meanings using the word “mouth”. But some of them are not so nice.

②For example, if you say bad things about a person, the person might protest (抗议) and say “Do not bad mouth me”. Another situation is that you thought someone said something bad about you, and you ask him. He might say, “Do not put words in my mouth!” Sometimes, people tell the person something they didn’t mean to tell. The speaker might say, “I really put my foot in my mouth this time.” In other words, he might feel sad for saying the wrong thing.

③Sometimes when one person is speaking, he says the same thing that his friend is going to say. When this happens, the friend might say. “You take the words right out of my mouth!”

④Some people have lots of money because they were born into a very rich family. There is an expression for this, too. You might say such a person “was born with a silver spoon (银匙) in his mouth.” This rich person is the opposite of a person who lives from hand to mouth. English speakers use idioms (习语) all the time. You can hear them in conversations, read them in articles, or hear them in films and songs. You don’t need to use them yourself, but it’s important for you to understand them.     1    .

If you “have a bone to pick with someone”, you have problem and you need to discuss it with someone. What’s more, you need to find a way to work it out.     2    .

If you “get up on the wrong side of the bed”, you wake up in a bad mood, often because you haven’t slept well. Be careful of this situation. It might make your work worse or you could shout at others more easily.     3    .

If some people “go bananas”, they become very excited, or extremely (极其) happy or angry. This idiom probably got its name from what monkeys usually do when seeing bananas.

If you tell someone to “take something with a pinch of salt”, you’re telling him or her not to believe everything that others say.     4    . These people might be dishonest and unkind.

If some people try to “pull the wool over your eyes”, they try to stop you seeing, knowing or finding out something, often by tricking you or lying to you.     5    . Or you might be easily cheated or fooled by them.

A.Or it might get you into trouble
B.You should try to find out what they are really like
C.It’s for reminding him or her to be careful of certain people
D.Here are some common idioms for you
E.Try to control this terrible feeling as well as possible
F.It means how to get along well with others

【推荐2】People use languages to communicate. Any language has its ways to express people’s minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms. An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, “under the weather” is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say “I’m under the weather”, they are saying that they’re not feeling well. Another example, “in all weathers” means “in all kinds of weather”. So, “There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers” tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.

Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand, if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.

Metaphor (比喻) is often used in idioms. Let’s read the following two examples:

●It makes my blood boil (煮沸) when people litter (乱扔).

●The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside at dark night.

In neither situation above, our blood can reach the point so high or so low in temperature. Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to work out the unhappy feelings of really angry in the first example and very afraid in the second.

Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.

B.We should try to express our minds with it.
C.We should find an interesting way to learn it.
D.We should create situations to guess its meaning.
4. What’s the author’s attitude (态度) about idioms?
