CIMON 2 is a floating computer assistant. It first appeared as a helper in the International Space Station (ISS国际空间站) on December 5th, 2019. According to the space plan, CIMON 2 will go back to Earth in 2022.
Actually, the ISS is a science lab in space. Usually astronauts stay in it for five or six months. Can you imagine how boring it is to live in a tight space with just five other people for six months? So CIMON is here.
CIMON stands for Crew Interactive Mobile(互动移动) Companion. As a product(产品) of a European airplane company, it is a robot with a round face, weighing about 5 kilograms. It has no legs or arms, but it can move where it needs to go with motors(马达) inside. Some people also describe it as “a kind of flying brain”.
CIMON keeps two jobs in mind. One is helping astronauts with tasks. The other is trying to be “someone” astronauts can talk to. Helping astronauts is easy for CIMON—it can see, hear, understand, and speak. The brain of CIMON can understand not just what people say, but also what they mean. If astronauts ask it for instructions or information, it can give answers, or use its screen to show pictures or papers, if needed.
In addition, CIMON has several cameras, which can take pictures and videos to help astronauts keep records of experiments or important actions. The more difficult part of CIMON’s job is being a companion for the astronauts. The first CIMON was able to understand 1,000 sentences, but that wasn’t enough. CIMON 1 seemed to misunderstand and become confused(困惑的) when hearing difficult sentences.
CIMON 2 has been improved so that it can find out how people are feeling. The company wants CIMON 2 to be a calm and trusted friend. This could be especially important if tension(紧张气氛) in a group of astronauts causes them to stop thinking clearly, and the astronauts don’t want to discuss with their teammates, they can turn to CIMON 2.

It means “becoming rich”. “6” is another lucky number for many people. So people like to choose numbers for their car numbers or phone numbers. And the car numbers or phone numbers with lucky numbers are more expensive than those without lucky numbers. The opening ceremony of 29th Olympics began at 8:08 p. m. on August 8, 2008 in Beijing. It was all about the number 8. While the number “4” means “death”(死亡) . So people try to avoid “4” in their car numbers and telephone numbers.
However, many people don’t believe lucky numbers. They think a number may have different meanings in different places. As far as I know, there is no such relationship (联系) between the numbers and luck. People give each number a certain (固定的) meaning to make our life convenient and easy to understand. “Everybody hates it, but everybody does it”. A recent report said that 40% of Americans hate tipping.
The common opinion in the past was that tips both rewarded the efforts of good service and reduced uncomfortable feelings of inequality (不平等).
But according to a new research from Cornell University (康奈尔大学), tips no longer serve any useful function. The paper analyzes the data they got from 2,547 groups dining at 20 different restaurants.
Tipping is better explained by culture than by the money people spend. In America, tipping is regarded as part of the accepted cost of a service. Hairdressers can expect to get 15%-20%. And the mall who delivers your fast food should be paid $2. In Europe, tipping is less common. In many Asian countries, tipping has never really caught on at all.
According to Michael Lynn, the Cornell paper’s author (作者), countries in which people are more social or out-going tend to tip more. He says, “In America, where people are expressive and eager to mix up with others, tipping is about social approval. If you tip badly, people think less of you.
A.But why do tips exist? |
B.Tipping well is a chance to show off. |
C.Only a few have really taken to tipping. |
D.The connection between larger tips and better service was very weak. |

When they dream about the future, many people like to think of having a flying car. With such a car, they could fly 480 km an hour without traffic lights. However, some people believe there will be problems with traffic control. If flying cars become popular, there is likely to be air traffic jam (堵塞). What will also happen if the cars stop working? They must face these problems if flying cars are used in the future.
3D printing (印刷) is another new technology with exciting possibilities. 3D printers are used to build an object with liquid plastic. They build the object layer (层) by layer until it is done. Many car companies (公司) are now using 3D printers to make life — size models of car parts, and medical companies use the technology to make man — made body parts. As they move into the future, 3D printing will greatly change the way they shop, the way they produce goods and the way they treat illness. 3D printers are useful in many ways, but such equipment will be very expensive.
Looking ahead, they will be able to fly to work or print out new shoes. There are some problems to solve before this is possible, but they can certainly dream of a world where technology makes life easier and safer for millions of people.

The device is designed to fight against air and sound pollution. Watch Your Stress When we feel stressed, our bodies produce something called cortisol (皮质醇). Researchers from the University of California, US, recently developed a smart watch. It can detect (检测) cortisol levels in your sweat (汗液) and give real-time information. They can even make men handsome and women beautiful. They also tell people from different fields. For example, we can tell a soldier form a policeman only by the uniforms they are wearing.
Clothes can show many things about a person. They can stand for a person’s social status, his likes and dislikes, his hopes, dreams and so on. A quiet person, for example, might like to wear dark clothes. An easy-going person, on the other hand, might prefer to wear bright-colored ones. Old people prefer to wear traditional clothes, while young people might like to choose fashionable ones. When a little boy puts on a “soldier’s” uniform, he may want to show that he wishes to become a PLA man when he grows up.
Clothes will continue to develop to satisfy our personal tastes. They will become more comfortable, colorful and fashionable. People will find in the market more clothes they like to show their personalities.

Do you remember your dreams? Do people have the same dreams? Why do we dream? There are many questions about dreams. We dream during the REM (rapid (快的) eye movement) stage (阶段) of sleep. We have about five periods of REM sleep during the night. The first REM cycle (周期) lasts about 10 minutes. As the night goes on, the REM cycle gets longer. By early morning, the REM cycle can last up to 90 minutes. Usually, it is in this last REM cycle that we remember our dreams.
Dreams change as people age. People may have several dreams each night. Some are like films and usually in color. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something and trying to find the answer. Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can’t remember the dreams clearly.
It is reported that too much dreaming is bad for our health. The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind is hard at work. That is why we may have a long sleep and still feel tired when we wake up.

In the U.S., people in Alaska may have a learner’s license (执照) at the age of fourteen. This is quite different from the driving laws of Niger, where a person must be at least twenty-three years old to drive. If you want to know the minimum driving age in most countries, the answer is eighteen. It may also surprise you to learn that not every country allows people to drive, although most of them do. For example, women are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia no matter how old they are.
Driving on the right or left side of the road is also different. In Great Britain, Cyprus, Australia, India, and Malaysia, people drive on the left. However, in the U.S., Mexico, France, and Canada, people are asked to drive on the right.
Other different driving laws between countries include those about using mobile phones. In Japan, using any kind of mobile phones is illegal(违法的), even if you do not need to hold the phone with your hands. However, in Argentina and Australia, drivers are allowed to talk on their mobile phones if they do not use their hands.
You might also find it interesting to learn that some countries have very unusual laws. For example, in Cyprus, it is against the law to eat or drink anything while driving.
