Scientists in Japan have developed electric chopsticks that are designed to help people cut down on salt. Though human bodies need salt, many people eat far too much of it, which is unhealthy. It’s well known that eating too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease and so on. The special chopsticks use a tiny bit of electricity to make food seem saltier than it is.
Kirin, a Japanese company that sells food and drink, worked with researchers at Miyashita Laboratory to develop the chopsticks. The chopsticks have a battery pack that can be worn on the wrist (手腕). When the tips of the chopsticks are put in the mouth, a very light electric current (电流)—too small to be felt as a shock—changes the way the tongue (舌头) tastes certain chemicals.
Experiments showed that with the chopsticks, food could have up to 30% less salt and still taste just as salty. So far Kirin hasn’t announced plans to sell the chopsticks. But it is looking into ways the technology could be used with other eating utensils (餐具), including spoons.

A freshman is a first-year college student. “Fifteen” refers to fifteen pounds, the fifteen pounds added to a student’s weight in his or her first year. There are a number of reasons why first-year university students gain (增加) the weight, but it’s encouraging to know that fresh-men don’t have to add these harmful fifteen pounds.
Mistakes choosing food
University kitchens serve many kinds of food. Some students choose unhealthy food, because now their parents are not nearby to help them choose. Some students visit the kitchen many times while studying. Late at night, some students get harmful fast food such as fish and chips with Coke to drink. Students also have less time for walking, running, and doing sports because of their schoolwork.
Eating right
If you’re careful, you don’t have to add fifteen pounds. Here are some ideas:
● Think more about what you eat.
● Eat plenty of vegetables and healthy meats.
● Don’t eat desserts full of sugar, have fruit after dinner.
● Try not to eat so much unhealthy food while you study.
● It’s all right to have a little fast food sometimes, but not often.
● Write down the foods you eat.
● Walk, run, do sports and you will feel better!
Remember that the “freshman fifteen” can happen to anyone. Talk to your friends about it. Together, try to eat healthy food and not to eat unhealthy food. Walking, running, and playing sports is always more fun with friends. Help each other and you can have a healthy and happy freshman year.

It was a February afternoon in a Brooklyn classroom. Sixteen-year-old Taylor Engler came face to face with a cow. But it was all in her head. She was transported by a virtual (TE拟的)reality (VIO headset-it took Taylor and her classmates to a farm 250 miles away. For students, the technology means field trips are no longer limited by the length of a bus ride.“I was not expecting it to be right in my face!”That's what Taylor said after taking off the headset and finding herself back in the classroom.
On any school day, students can take virtual reality “trips". They are deep-sea diving. They are observing medical operations. They are visiting the Science Museum in London. Teachers say it's another way to involve the iPhone generation(一代人)into classroom learning and it can help with their understanding and improve their grades. Calm Jones, a science teacher, has walked students through the northern forest with a Google app called Expeditions. “It can be done in a period or two with the help of the new technology, he said. "But it could take even a week sometimes to take a real expedition.’, "It's different from watching videos. You can actually move",Taylor said during the lesson on farm animals. "Not only move, but also feel, said Richard Lamb. He studies how brains deal with information.“Your physiological responses(生理反应)in virtual reality are similar to what you get in doing the actual activity.”Lamb said.“Heart rate, breathing...everything.”
It is unknown how many classrooms will use the technology. But experts say it's still rare. Each headset can cost as little as$20 or$30,but systems and software for classes run into thousands of dollars. And good software is in great need. Another problem we face is how to make sure the VR technology mimics(模仿)the real world closely. "But we have to say VR technology provides students with a huge learning opportunity,”said David Evans, director of the National Science Teachers Association.
John Miller, a chemistry teacher, agreed. "Too often in schools, students did something wrong in their chemistry experiments. But we don't have enough materials for them to redo the experiments. In virtual reality, all they do is hitreset on the computer. We don't have to actually use chemicals.”Both Miller and Evans stressed the technology could enrich-not replace-real-world experiences. "We have to remain anchored(立足)in the real world,”Evans warned, "because that's the one that we really need to study and explain.”

But for some problems, even supercomputers seem too slow. So scientists are trying to make a new type of tool: quanturn (量子) computers.
In 2020, Chinese scientists created the world’s first light-based quanturn computer, called Jiuzhang. Compared with today’s best super computers, Jiuzhang can calculate (计算) 100,000 billion times faster. Now, there are an even faster one: Jiuzhang 2.0. It made a big breakthrough with a difficult math problem. It calculated an answer in just millisecond (毫秒), according to Xinhua. The fastest classical super computer would take 30 trillion (万亿) years to do that!
Why is there such a big difference? The secret is that quanturn computers work in a totally different way from classical ones. In classical computers, like our laptops, the information is stored as 0s and 1s. These are called “bits”. But quanturn computers use “quits” it (量子比特). They can be 0.1 or 0 and 1 at the same time — or anything in between!
This way, quanturn computers can receive information much faster. A classical computer’s calculation is like looking for a lost dog by searching one street after another, but quanturn computers can do it by searching lots of streets at the same time!
What can we do with it? Since the technology is still in its early stages, it’s hard to predict. “But it can improve our computing capabilities (能力) and help research in many fields, such as drug design and code breaking (密码破译),” team member Lu Chaoyang told the People’s Daily.

Two teams of scientists in Denmark and in the United Kingdom came up with the same question at about the same time: Could they identify(识别)the animals in an area from DNA that was simply floating in the air?
DNA and eDNA Every living thing has DNA that can be used to identify it. They leave bits of DNA behind them wherever they go. DNA left behind like this is called “environmental” DNA, or eDNA. Scientists can use it to tell what kinds of animals are in a certain place. |
Testing for eDNA isn’t a new idea, but most of the time, scientists look for eDNA in water. Neither team knew that the other group was working on a similar experiment. One collected samples from different locations at Denmark’s Copenhagen Zoo, and the other did at Hamerton Zoo Park in the UK. The scientists used slightly different methods to collect their samples. But basically, both teams used vacuums(真空吸尘器)and fans to collect tiny bits of DNA.
In the laboratory, comparing their samples with examples of DNA from different animals, the scientists were able to identify many different animals at the zoos.
The scientists chose to test in zoos because they had rare animals not naturally found in the area. Each team only discovered about the other experiment after they had written a paper about their own results. The two decided to combine(合并)their results and publish a paper together.
Both teams are excited about the ways this new method could be used in the wild. The researchers believe the method could help scientists a lot. Scientists have been looking for better ways to track endangered animals without interfering(干扰)with them. If researchers know where animals live, they can do a better job of protecting them. The next step is to figure out how to take this method into nature.

Stephen was a student at Oxford University. He studied math and science. Then, at the age of twenty, he became sick. He was so young, but the doctors said to his family, ‘He has only two more years to live.’ In fact, the doctors were wrong—he didn’t die. He couldn’t walk but he used a wheelchair (轮椅). He couldn’t feed himself and get in or out of bed himself. But he didn’t yield to the condition. He talked with the help of a computer. After Oxford, Stephen went to Cambridge University. Three years later, in 1965, he became a doctor of philosophy (哲学).
Because of his serious health problems, it was difficult for him to draw or to write. So he started to think in pictures. With this new way of thinking, he became one of the most famous scientists in the world. In 1988, he wrote his first important book, A Brief History of Time. It sold more than 5.5 million copies in 33 different languages. He was once invited to China, he was very confident and humorous.

It helps children learn to do some housework that they have to do when they live on their own, and it also gives children a sense of responsibility and confidence.
Most experts agree, however, that chores should fit children. Parents shouldn’t ask a schoolboy to cook when he is doing his homework. If he has many activities after school on schooldays, there is no time left to do chores. Perhaps he can do chores on weekends.
When a child does what his parents ask him to do happily, he will probably have the feeling of growing up. Chores can be useful. They are a teaching tool. Parents use the tool to teach children so that they can care for themselves some day. And please make sure that parents also do chores.
If parents don’t keep a clean house, children won’t find any reason to do chores.
