During the 2016 Rio Olympics, people were surprised to see the round, purple marks on the body of the famous American swimmer Michael Phelps. What happened to him? In fact, he just visited a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and had “cupping” (拔火罐).
Massage (推拿) and acupuncture (针灸) are two other important kinds of TCM. Chinese massage can make you relaxed and fresh. Acupuncture takes away pain, though the look is funny.
TCM is an important part of Chinese culture. The earliest medical classic in China, Huangdi’s Classic on Medicine, came out more than 2,000 years ago. The book is about the relationship between man and nature. Nature keeps balanced if yin and yang work well together. TCM helps to do that Quit especially, for some health problems, a doctor of TCM will not give you medicine. Instead, he may give you just a food plan and right ways to eat.
For example, it is common to eat on the way to school at our desk, or in front of the TV. But TCM thinks it’s wrong. Here are the correct ways: sit down to eat. While eating, turn off the TV and get away from the work desk. Eat seasonal foods. Do not miss any of the three meals. Also, get your body moving often. Just as the saying goes, “Running water is never stale.”
Nowadays, Traditional Chinese Medicine is becoming more and more popular around the world. A government report says that people in 183 countries and areas are now using TCM.

When you buy M&M’s, you probably enjoy the bright colors of those yummy chocolates, right? Well those colors could be a thing of the past! Mars, the company that makes M&M’s, will stop using artificial (人造的) colors in their products within the next five years.
Mars says that it’s because most people want them to do so. But in the past different types of these dyes (染料)stopped being allowed. People worried that they might have caused health problems like trouble sleeping, anxiety and even cancer.
However, are the artificial colors that are still used today bad for humans to eat or drink? The most common question is whether it affects kids’ behavior, but it’s hard to say for sure.
A British study, called the Southampton Study, made an experiment. They gave one group of 8-to 9-year-old children a drink with food coloring and the other group with none. They found the kids that drank the food coloring showed hyperactivity (活动过度). Some people believe that means it is a cause of Attention Deficit and Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD,注意力缺陷多动障碍).
But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which checks the artificial colors to make sure they are safe, doesn’t think there’s enough proof yet. They say that food coloring doesn’t necessarily cause these behavioral problems. It just affects some children more who already have hyperactivity problems.
“Food dyes are added for their color to make foods fun,” said Michael Jacobson, director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. “However, they have no real health purpose.”
Maybe since they aren’t doing anything good for us, more foods should not have the dyes anyways. But it will cost companies like Mars a lot of money to get rid of the colors while keeping people interested in their products.

However, they still worry about the ingredients (原料) they use. So, is there any way we can eat safely?
There just may be. People in Brazil have a wonderful way that they would like to show us.
Sao Paulo is the largest city in Brazil. Growing vegetables by themselves has become popular. Most people in the city live in apartments, so they don’t have a garden. But if you make good use of the space on your balcony (阳台), it’s enough to grow vegetables for a family of three. These “urban (城市的) farmers” all say the vegetables they grow taste good. What’s more, they are safe and fresh.
Growing vegetables by ourselves has many good sides. First, these vegetables won’t be polluted by pesticides (杀虫剂). Second, because they are fresher, they are often good for health. The vegetables also make the indoor air cleaner. Last but not least, the relationship between family members may become better as they work together.
Now, you have learned about all of these good sides of growing vegetables by yourself. Do you want to try it? I believe it will be easy if one of your family members has a green thumb. But if not, look for some advice. Here is a useful book: The Edible Balcony.

China now has one of the highest salt intakes in the world. To fix this, China issued the first salt reduction guide for its food industry on April 18, 2018, People’s Daily reported.

If the guide is followed properly, the average salt intake for Chinese people will drop by 20 percent by 2030. The guide calls for food companies to lower the salt content in their products by improving their production techniques(技术)and changing flavors(滋味).
The salt we take is mainly comes from processed(加工的)food. For example, a 104-gram can of Lay’s classic potato chips contains about 0.66 grams of salt, which accounts for over 10 percent of the recommended daily salt intake.
A small amount of salt makes food taste better and is important for good health, but eating too much increases the risk of high blood pressure, Xinhua reported.
Less salt leads to better health. And there’s no need to worry that food will be less tasty in the future. A study by the Monell Chemical Senses Center in the United States found that it’s easy for people to reduce their salt intake. Susannah Fox from the Pew Internet Project says doctors are still the main source of health information. But the study found that searching online is one of the leading ways that people look for a second opinion. He says, “People are sort of fact-checking what they have heard from a doctor. Our studies show that people are still very likely to turn to a health doctor when they need a diagnosis (诊断) or are planning a treatment.”
Forty-four percent of people are actually looking for doctors or other providers when they search for health information online. Two-thirds of Internet users look online for information about a certain disease or medical condition.
The Internet has also become an important source of spiritual support for people with health problems. Susannah Fox says one in five Internet users has gone online to find other people who have the same condition.
A disease is considered uncommon if it affects(侵袭) fewer than 200,000 people worldwide. The rise of social networking has made it easier for people with uncommon diseases to connect with each other and feel less alone. Social networking is also changing the way some doctors and patients communicate with each other.
Dr. Jeff Livingston operates a medical center for women in Irving, Texas. His office uses password-protected software to share information with patients. He says the software has increased efficiency(效率), reduced costs and improved relations with patients. It has just changed the way we do health care. Last month, I slept through a flight from London to Beijing. When I woke up, I found that I could no longer move my right arm and fingers. There was no pain. My arm simply didn't follow my brain’s instructions to move, as if it was no longer mine.
One doctor said he could do nothing but give me some pills. “Rest for two months first and come back for an examination.” I felt great fear.
In that moment of despair, my friend, an acupuncturist in Sichuan, offered to help. I started my treatment the next day. At first, I was worried. After a few days, I could move my fingers. Two weeks later, I could use chopsticks. Within a month, I got almost well. It was amazing.
Acupuncture first appeared in China more than 2, 000 years ago. It works by improving the smooth flow (流动) of “qi”. “Qi” flows through “jingluo” throughout the body.
I hope this kind of traditional Chinese treatment will bring health and happiness to friends all over the world.

【推荐3】Several years ago, I experienced a headache that made me want to hit my head against the wall. I tried many ways, but nothing worked. In my hopelessness, my father suggested acupuncture (针灸).
With a little hope, I went into a Chinese medicine hospital. After hearing my problem, the doctor placed three fingers to feel my heartbeat. I was then guided to a room and told to lie down. Soon, the doctor took out the needles (针), and that made me feel a little afraid.
I was surprised that the treatment (治疗) didn’t begin on my head but on the back of my hand. As the doctor gently acted the needles, I got the feeling that something was moving throughout my whole body.
The doctor then continued to act more needles across my body. The electricity (电源) was turned on, and the doctor left the room. While lying still, I could sense the electricity moving throughout me. Around five minutes later, the doctor returned and changed the electricity level. Later, the doctor turned off the electricity and lifted the needles. The treatment lasted for about 20 minutes. The doctor then gave me some Chinese medicine to drink for 7 days.
I went to the doctor for a total of 10 times, and each time the same thing was repeated and the same medicine was given.
I got out of my headache for two years. I now prefer acupuncture. If you’ve experienced similar problems, I highly suggest trying it.

What we need:
How we do the experiment:
1.Pour tag water into the glass until it is about 2/3 full.
2.Drop the egg carefully into the glass and watch it going down towards the bottom.
3.Add about five spoons of salt to the water. Test to see if the egg goes up.
4.Add more salt if the egg is still at the bottom.
The science behind it:
Things go down in the water when they are denser (密度更大的) than the water. By adding salt, we make the water denser. Once the water is denser than the egg, it goes up and floats (漂浮) on the water.
You can also try other things to see if you can have the same result.

C.Because the denser the liquid is, the easier it is for an object to float in it. |
【推荐2】Nobody laughed when the UK comedy show Little Britain toured the US. Americans didn’t find the “British stereotypes( 刻板印象)” funny. One character was a woman who was sick whenever she saw a foreigner. Another was a loud and rude l5-year-old girl cursing(骂) at her teachers. But back home, British people were laughing, thinking, “Yes! That’s exactly what we’re like!”
A laugh is a laugh in any language, but the reasons for it can be very different. Britons and Americans speak the same language, but humor does not always translate.
Take The Office as an example. This was originally a UK TV series but it was changed for the US. Both the US and UK series are set in a boring workplace in a boring town. But David Brent, the boss of the UK office, is not a nice guy like Michael Scott in the US version. “We had to make Michael Scott a slightly nicer guy,” wrote series creator Ricky Gervais. “He couldn’t be too mean.”
Gervais said British people are different from Americans because “Britons cruelly make fun of people we like or dislike... and of ourselves”. He believes the differences between the Americans and British sense of humor are because of “our upbringing.”
“Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States,” he wrote. “Britons are told, ‘It won’t happen for you’.”
Things usually turn out fine at the end of every US Office episode. Even if they’re not perfect, the characters “learn a lesson” for the future.
But in David Brent’s office and in lots of UK comedies the last scene is often sad. You are often left with the feeling that things just couldn’t get worse. For British people, this seems truer to life and so much funnier.
It’s not just Britain and the US that have comic differences. Few foreigners would understand a Chinese cross-talk show, for example.
Cultural differences are no laughing matter. But comic differences can be a window into a culture.
1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To show that British humor is not funny at all. |
B.To show that American people don’t understand British people. |
C.To show that Britain and America have different stereotypes. |
D.To show how humor may mean different things in different cultures. |
A.treatment and education from childhood |
B.the way in which a person is taught to be humorous |
C.inborn talent in making fun of people |
D.the way in which a person improves himself |
A.Britons do not like to make fun of others. |
B.British comedy often has a moral message. |
C.American people are brought up to be more positive. |
D.Jokes are difficult to translate from one language into another. |
A.They are slight differences that can be ignored. |
B.They can partly show cultural differences. |
C.They show stereotypes of different cultures. |
D.They help people communicate with each other. |

Some scientists once studied a group of frigate birds (军舰鸟) during a ten-day flight. They recorded these birds’ brain activities. Their findings made headlines-frigate birds can sleep while they are flying!
According to this study, these birds take two types of in-flight naps. The first is called Rapid Eye Movement(REM快速动眼) sleep. It is the deepest stage of sleep. For humans, REM sleep can last for several minutes. For flying birds, however, REM sleep lasts for only a few seconds. Even so, REM sleep is still very important for proper brain functioning.
The other type of nap frigate birds take is Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep. During NREM sleep, the birds put only half of their brain to sleep, while the other half stays awake. The eyes of these birds are connected to the waking part of their brain. In other words, they sleep with their eyes open. They do this to stay away from dangers, and many birds do this even when they aren’t migrating.
Even though frigate birds sleep during the flight, they prefer to stay awake most of the time, spending less than 3% of their time sleeping. Once they reach land, they recover their lost sleep, spending almost half their time dozing.
However, not all migratory birds sleep in this way. Many make occasional pit stops on their way to get a good rest before the next leg of their journey. Some stay completely awake during the whole journey. The Alpine Swift (高山雨燕), for example, can fly for almost 200 days continuously. There is still little evidence of these birds sleeping during their long journeys.
The sleeping habits of birds differ from species (物种) to species. This makes the study of migratory birds very exciting for scientists. In the future, we may learn more amazing things about these animals.
