Self-driving cars are believed to be the future of driving. Companies including Toyota, Uber and Google are all competing to be the first to bring them to market.
However, car makers need to solve one problem first: How driverless cars communicate with passers-by, bikers and other drivers. Most drivers today use gestures to show their purposes. They wave a car into a lane(车道), or nod at passers-by and cyclists, to let them cross the street. But self-driving cars don’t have this ability. What can they do? US carmaker Ford and its partner Virginia Tech think they have the answer, reported Business Insider. The team is testing a method that uses light signals to show what self-driving cars are doing. For example, if a driverless car is yielding, it could flash two white lights side to side. A solid white light tells there are no humans in the car. A slow blinking light shows the car is coming to a stop. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up. To test the method on real roads, the team designed a special suit that looks exactly like a car seat. When a driver wears it, it appears to people that the car is really driverless. The team then successfully got more than 1,500 hours of data after about 2,900 kilometres of “self-driving” through busy cities. The data recorded how people interacted with a driverless vehicle. Ford says they plan to share the data with 11 other companies, reported dogonews. com. The company wants to work with other carmakers to design a signaling system that would be understood by all.

The taxi is very important in the UK. When thinking of London, many images come to mind: Big Ben, the London Eye, red telephone boxes... and black London taxis.
But what is so special about a taxi? First, the shape and style of taxis are very different from the ones we see on the road. It looks like a half-car and half-van (半厢式货车). It has plenty of room in its back, and that is easy for disabled people (残疾人) to use. Besides, the black color makes it special on the road.
Besides the black taxis, drivers are also special in London. They have to pass a complex taxi driving test. First, they must remember 320 travel routes (路线) and more than 2,500 streets in London correctly. Then, they have to know the hotels, pubs, restaurants, scenic spots (景点) and Barber shops clearly. Because there are many tourists in London, they should take them to destination (目的地) quickly.
The taxi driver not only drives customers to destination, but also has a conversation with them. The London taxi driver is usually friendly and talkative. Most of time when I get in a taxi, I often ask how the driver is. Then we usually talk about sports or news events.

Scientists say the dream will come true in 2081 because the flying cars will be invented in the future. Every family will have a flying car, not only in movies, but also in real life. These helicopter-like cars will be able to fly themselves with two or more passengers (乘客).
In the 3D space of air, flying cars will move around without bridges or tunnels. Cars will park on the tops of houses. This will free up parking space on the ground. Also, we won’t spend much time on our way because we will get somewhere faster and spend more time doing the things we like. We will be able to sleep in more before school because the flying cars will get us to school faster than normal buses. We will be able to get home faster because there will be fewer traffic jams in the air.
Some people think flying cars are not a good idea. It will be dangerous for flying cars to fall out of the sky. Maybe many people will lose their lives because of this.

According to a 2005 study, 30% of the population will experience a voice disorder at some point in their life.
In a study published in the journal Nature Communications this week, a group of bioengineering researchers from the University of California have put forward an attractive solution. They have designed and tested a soft patch (片) that can be stuck onto a person's neck, where it will pick up muscle movements and, with the help of machine-learning algorithms (算法) that process the signals, translate them into speech.
When a person loses their voice today, the easiest solution is to turn to typing, texting, or writing notes to communicate. Typing can be slow and inconvenient, says Jun Chen, the paper’s lead author, and writing notes is only possible in good lighting. The new solution would be able to solve all these problems.
Dr. Chen’s device works based on something called the magnetoelastic effect. Basically, when tiny magnetic bits (磁性钻头) are placed into soft materials, their magnetic properties can change as the material is stretched.
When the throat muscles move under the soft patch, the resulting magnetic-field variations can be changed into electrical signals. In a test with eight participants, the researchers recorded the signals as the subjects spoke and mouthed five different sentences. They then trained a machine-learning model which was then able to predict which of the five sentences the participants spoke—whether aloud or in silence—with more than 90% accuracy.
There is a way to go yet, for now the device can only recognize the five phrases it was trained on. Plus, to make it practical at scale, the researchers will need to collect a lot more data.
