My daughter Kelly is a cautious person .She needs to warm up to situations, and is hesitant (犹豫) to try new things. When with close friends, she becomes a leader who laughs loudly. But when that comfort zone is not around her, she is shy and nervous.
On Saturday, with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son’s birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon (三项全能). We practiced transitions (过渡) from swim to bike to run with her, we got all the equipment she’d need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me many times. She was nervous but trying to keep it together.
And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into the water, my face lit up. My daughter changed into the most confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated (主宰) that swim, won that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face.
I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my whole life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like that. It was because she was afraid of something and overcame that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before.
All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day. I won the chance to see my girl shine.
Shine on, sweet baby.

An old man was fishing on the bank of a river. A child came to see him fishing. The old man was really good at fishing and it didn’t take long for him to catch a full basket of fish. The old man saw that the child was very cute, and he wanted to give her a whole basket of fish. But the child shook her head. The old man was surprised and asked, “Why don’t you want the fish?”
The child answered, “I want the fishing rod (竿) in your hands.”
The old man asked, “Why do you want the rod?”
“It doesn’t take long to eat all the fish in a basket. But if I have the fishing rod, I can go fishing by myself and I won’t be afraid of not having any more fish to eat.”
I think you will certainly say that the child is very smart. Wrong! If she doesn’t know how to fish, she can not have fish to eat, even though she has the fishing rod. It’s useless to only have a fishing rod. Fishing skills are the most important, not the fishing rod.
Too many people think that if they have a “fishing rod” in their life, they will no longer fear (害怕) the wind and rain. They are just like the child, who thought that if she had a fishing rod, she would have fish to eat.

Mr. Baker drove the boat towards the shore(岸). We started casting(抛) the fishing line from there. I finally caught a fish. It could be less than six inches long, but at least it was a fish. Then I caught another, and another. They were too small to keep, but it was fun catching them.
The sun came out, so Mr. Baker decided to leave. I asked, “Where are we going? This is a great place!” “We don’t want to keep catching these little ones,” Mr. Baker said. “They’re not worth the time. Let’s go to catch a real fish.”
Believe it or not, my feelings were a little hurt. The fish I was catching were real fish, and that was more fun than catching nothing. And we had the same bad luck when we got to the deeper places in the lake: No fish.
But this taught me a lesson. Even though we returned home empty-handed, we went for the big fish. In the short period, this kind of thinking might not be so fun. But it’s the long period you should be thinking about the big goals(目标), the ones that need a lot of failure all the way. It’s a lesson: If you spend all your time catching the little fish, you won’t have time to catch the big ones.

“She might have Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔茨海默症),” her mother said. “We might have to put her in a nursing home(养老院)so that she can get proper care.
“Oh, that’s terrible! She’ll miss her own house!” Sally said.
“Maybe, but we can see her on weekends,” her mother answered. “We can bring her presents.”
“Like ice cream? Grandma loves strawberry ice cream!” Sally said.
The first time they visited Grandma, Sally wanted to cry. Grandma sat all by herself in the corner of the room.
Sally hugged Grandma.“Look,” she said, “we brought you strawberry ice cream!”
Grandma took it and began to eat without saying a word.
“She doesn’t seem to know us.” Sally was upset. “You have to give her time.” her mother said. But the next time it was the same. Grandma ate the ice cream, but didn’t say anything.
“Grandma, do you know who I am?” Sally asked.
“You’re the girl who brings me the ice cream.” Grandma said.
“Yes, but I’m Sally, your granddaughter. Don’t you remember me?”
“Sure. You’re the girl who brings me ice cream.” All of a sudden, Sally realized that Grandma would never remember her.
“Oh, how I love you, Grandma!” she said. Just then she saw a tear roll down Grandma’s cheek(脸颊), “Love,” she said. “I remember love.”
“You see, dear, that’s all she wants,” her mother said. “Love.”
“I’ll bring her ice cream every weekend then, and hug her even if she doesn’t remember me.” Sally said.

Ava colored some princess pictures while I was writing. She watched a cartoon and sometimes stopped to come to talk to me or to get a snack or drink. When she walked up to me more quickly than ever and pleaded (恳求) with me, “Grandma, can you come to play with me in the toy room for a little while?” I couldn’t refuse her, so I turned the computer off, took her by the hand and walked upstairs to play.
That’s when I became a queen. A crown (皇冠) was put on my head while music was playing in the background. My new role as a queen began when a bell rang. I was told that a royal feast (皇家盛宴) would take place that evening and the entertainment would be provided. I sat there and enjoyed her imaginations in the sweetness of our moments together. Her introduction of every character in the royal feast was pretty clear. I was so glad that I’d like to be with her longer. I’m always busy, and time is valuable to me. I think of it like bank deposit (银行存款), and I get to decide how to spend it. When the final deposit is used at the end of my life, I hope I spent most of it on my family, together with my good work, and plenty of sweet memories for those I love.

IT was Christmas Eve, 1881. I was 15 years old and feeling like the world was over for me. I didn’t have enough money to buy myself the gift that I had wanted that year.
Dad came back in and there was ice in his beard. “You’ve been by widow (寡妇) Smith’s house recently?” he asked. Widow Smith lived two miles down the road. Her husband died a year ago and left her with three children.
“I rode by just today,” Dad continued. “Little Jack was out looking for wood (木头). They must be out of wood, Tom.”
We filled our sled (雪橇) high with wood. Then we went to the store and Dad bought some food, and a smaller pair of shoes. I tried to think through what Dad was doing. I knew we didn’t have much money, so why was Dad buying them so many things?
We got to the Smith’s house and went in. “We brought you a few things, madam,” Dad said, and put down the bag of food on the table. Then Dad handed widow Smith the pair of shoes. She bit her lower lip (下唇) to keep it from trembling (发抖), and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks.
My throat seemed to be filled with something, and there were tears in my eyes, too. Just then my dream gift seemed very unimportant. Dad had given me the look on widow Smith’s face and the smiles of her three children. He had given me the best Christmas of my life.

Her mom left and came back an hour later. It was about 6: 00 p. m., and the sky began to turn dark because of the black clouds. The wind also started to pick up. Then the rain started to beat against the windows. The trees shook hard. Some of the neighbors’ plants fell off their windows. “I’m scared,” said Molly to her mother. The storm lasted for about thirty minutes, long enough to make the lights go out and the old trees fall over. Even Gretchen, was staying quietly under the sofa. Molly’s mother lit some candles so they could see their way around the house. “What about dinner?” asked Molly.
