He began that adventure by traveling to different cities in the US before going on to other countries. He took his wife and three daughters with him and went wherever the road took him.
(A) It’s easy to feel lonely when you’re on the road. As my mother said repeatedly, “We made lots of new friends on our trip—most of them were workers who fix cars, since we often spent hours in repair shops during the journey.”
Getting along sometimes seemed impossible. There were always a lot of arguments, especially among us back-seat passengers about who had to sit in the middle.
But even if it was hard, we did learn a lot about forgiveness.
When in the Philippines, we drove to Quezon City one day. It should have been a one-hour drive but was nearly three, thanks to bad roads and worse traffic. “Did you put our suitcases(行李箱)in the car?” my father asked my mother as we arrived. “No,” she said. “I thought you did.” That was how a seven-hour car trip turned into a 16-hour-car trip, which was mostly spent in silence.
In situations like that, we had to learn to let go of our anger. We were stuck(困在)in a rolling box with the same people for the rest of the journey. Even if I sometimes felt like opening the car door and pushing one of sisters out, I kept my feelings to myself.
This is why my road trips were like moving universities to us. We earned our PhDs(博士学位)in how to get along with other people just by traveling in that old car.

For more than 30 years, Zhu Yanjun, 50, had been a migrant worker (农民工) in different cities like many others from the countryside. Can you believe that he won the second prize in Chinese Poetry Competition hosted by CCTV in February, 2023?
Born in a village in Jingning county, Gansu province, Zhu only had a middle school education. His love for reading was inspired by his Chinese language teacher who has published (发表) many articles in magazines. “I also wanted to publish stories, so I started to read, and borrowed books from friends and classmates,” he told China Daily.
Although Zhu later regretted putting an early end to his schooling, he did not stop his poetic journey. He worked at different places in more than 10 cities. Whenever he arrives in a city, he first visits the bookstores and libraries there. He would take a notebook with him in order to write down paragraphs from the books and memorize them.
At the beginning, he read poems from the Tang Dynasty and poems written by Chairman Mao Zedong. As time went by, he found some useful methods to remember them. He especially likes Chairman Mao’s words: nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it. Over the years, he has read thousands of poems and can memorize more than 1,000 of them.
Reading poetry helps Zhu stay calm and he never complains (抱怨) about hard work. “I hope I can help people around me enjoy the beauty of Chinese poetry.” Zhu said.
Zhu is already 50 years old, but he keeps on learning all the time. His story tells us that learning is a lifelong journey. Whether we are old or young, we should always learn to improve ourselves. Our life time is limited. Let’s put it to good use.

One day June Green visited the family doctor, Edward Smith. Dr. Smith was an old man with a long beard.
“What’s the problem, June?” Dr. Smith asked her.
“I’m very worried about my son, teddy.” Mrs. Green said, “I can’t stop him from gambling(赌博). He spends all his money betting on horse races. And not just on horse races,he’ll bet on anything. It doesn’t matter what it is.”
“I’ve cured people of gambling before.” Dr. Smith said, “Send him to me. I’ll talk to him.”
A week later, Dr. Smith spoke to Mrs. Green on the phone. “I think I’ve cured your son.” he said. “That’s wonderful. How did you do it?”
“Well,” the doctor said, “It was very strange. While we were talking, he was looking at my beard. Suddenly he said, ‘I bet you $50 that’s a false beard.’” “Oh, no!” Mrs. Green cried. “It’s all right,” the doctor said, “I knew what to do. ‘My beard isn’t a false one,’ I told him, ‘And I can prove it.’”
“ ‘Can I pull your beard and find out?’ your son asked me.”
“I thought, this was my chance to teach him a lesson, so I said, ‘Yes, you can pull my beard.’ ”
“Well, he pulled it, and soon found out it was real.” The doctor laughed. “He had to pay me $50. That should cure his gambling.”
“Doctor,” Mrs. Green said, “You’re wrong. You haven’t cured him. You’ve made him even worse.”
“How can that be?”
“The day before he went to see you, he bet me$100 that you would ask him to pull your beard!”

A Backcountry Adventure
Sunday, July l0th
We are back from our three-day camping trip to the Shenandoah Valley. Mom and Dad had been worried about our family’s reliance on computers, cell phones, and video games for entertainment. So they decided a camping trip would help us overcome our dependence on electronic devices. I knew we’d have to be resilient (适应力强的) in order to find a way to survive without the comforts of home.
When you camp in the backcountry, you could only bring necessities that you needed to survive, such as food, clothes, a camp stove, fuel, rope, a map, and a water container. At first, I was surprised that we weren’t bringing bottled water with us. Then my heavy, overstuffed backpack made me realize we’d soon use up any supply we could carry. Instead, we’d have to boil water from nearby streams.
Our first day in the wild was out of expectation. We scrabbled up rocky paths and waded in an ice-cold stream. Colourful wildflowers waved at us. I felt like I had stepped into a dreamy painting. After all that exercise, an intense hunger burned in my stomach. Mom’s homemade snacks had never tasted so good.
At night, the darkness seemed like a black curtain. I tried to read with an electric torch, but I couldn’t concentrate. I finally fell asleep to a chorus of chirping crickets (蟋蟀鸣叫声中).
By our last day, I had blistered (长水泡的) feet and bug-bitten arms. I was ready to go home. I couldn’t wait to play computer games. But a funny thing happened. Soon after I started my favorite game, I lost the interest. So I walked outside to get some fresh air. Mom and Dad’s plan had worked after all. Right then I decided to spend more time outdoors.

After a discussion among group members, we decided to perform a song and a dance. The song we chose was showed in the Chinese style and I was the lead singer.
Over the next three weeks, we used every minute we could find to rehearse (彩排). The dancers practised during breaks, and I practised through my phone. I used it to compare my performance with the original, which allowed me to correct my mistakes. (it, best, though, tried, everybody, difficult, was, their).
Finally, the day of the performance came. After making up and dressing up, we became nervous. Before going to stage, I told everyone, "No matter how we perform, we are sure to be the best, since the audience has paid a lot to see us."
As we left the stage, many people spoke to us, praising our performance. A foreign student even came over to us, as he was curious about our ancient-style costurnes. He took a photo with us, which became the best record of our hard work.
