What time is it? The answer you give can be different, because you are in different Earth’s time zones(时区). But how could you tell the time if you aren’t anywhere on Earth?

Scientists are now thinking of creating a lunar(月球的) time zone. They believe it would be better for astronauts to communicate by using Moon Time, as they travel to, from, and across the Moon. At the moment, astronauts are using time zones of their own countries. But there could be safety problems caused by the differences in time-telling.

________ Gravity(引力) influences how quickly or slowly time passes. Since gravity is weaker on the Moon, clocks run a bit faster there. After 24 hours, a lunar clock would be 56 microseconds ahead of a clock on Earth. Another point to consider is that a full day on Earth is about 24 hours between two sunsets. While on the Moon, it is nearly 709 hours, about 29.5 Earth days. This means that lunar nights can be around two weeks long, with only the Earth and the stars in the sky. With all this to think about, scientists need to decide whether it would be better to follow a time zone on Earth, or for the Moon to have its own special zone, which would have much longer days.

Scientists must consider other problems too. For example, who should be responsible for keeping the time zone going? And how can it be made practical for astronauts to use?

There are more countries planning Moon trips in the future. The idea of creating a time zone on the Moon would make these easier. And if a lunar time zone is set up, scientists could create time zones for other planets like Mars.

1. Scientists think that a lunar time zone can ________.
A.keep the Moon cleanB.keep astronauts healthy
C.make the Moon trips saferD.make space travel faster
2. Which of the following can be put in the blank ________ in Paragraph 3?
A.Setting up a lunar time zone is not easy.
B.Setting up a special time zone is important.
C.Scientists are holding different opinions.
D.Scientists need to do a lot of experiments.
3. If the Moon has its own special time zone, a full day of it can be about ________ on Earth.
A.56 microsecondsB.24 hoursC.two weeksD.29.5 days
4. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To give information about space travel.B.To introduce the idea of Moon Time.
C.To describe an experience of time travel.D.To share news about landing on Mars.

【推荐1】French doctors and American scientists have reported doing an operation in which the doctor was outside the operating room. This kind of operation is known as robotic operation.

Doctor Marescaux did the operation in an office in New York City last month, while a sixty-eight-year-old woman patient was in a hospital in Strasbourg, France.

A doctor in Strasbourg got the patient ready. He placed medical tools and a small video camera in her stomach area. Doctor Marescaux in New York watched the patient on a video screen. Then he used the computer to send messages to the robot machine. The robot moved the tools that cut the woman’s gallbladder(胆囊)away. The woman got well soon after the operation and left the hospital two days later.

Experts say the main problem with such a robotic operation is based on high-speed telecommunications between the doctor and the robot. Technology must be able to send a doctor’s order to a robot to move the tools quickly.

Experts also say a successful robotic operation will improve an operation. For example, the robot can make much smaller movements than a person can. A robot machine can turn tools in ways that a doctor’s hand cannot.

Doctors say such a robotic operation will make possible safer and better operations in the future. They say it will improve doctor training. It will also mean that doctors could do an operation on people in dangerous places far away. And it could mean that people could have operations done by top doctors without having to travel to the city where doctors work.

1. “Robotic operation” means “____”.
A.a special kind of robot invented by doctors
B.an operation done far away
C.an operation done with the help of a robot
D.something done to mend a robot
2. We use the robot in the operation because _____.
A.it can send messages at a high speed
B.even a top doctor can’t do the operation himself
C.it can make the operation safer and better
D.operations can be done without any doctors
3. If we want to use the robot in the operation, we must solve the problem of _____.
A.top doctorsB.smaller movements
C.doctor trainingD.high-speed telecommunications
4. If the smaller movement can’t be done by doctors in the operation, we may use _______ to solve it.
A.more toolsB.a robot machine
C.a video cameraD.telecommunications
5. Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Robotic operation is good for doctor training.
B.Robotic operation has been used in the USA.
C.Experts speak highly of robotic operation.
D.The robot is used to watch the patient clearly.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要内容是介绍中国科学家在南极冰盖最高点展开的科学研究以及重大意义。

【推荐2】A 12-man Chinese team landed on the Antarctic icecap peak (南极冰盖最高点) on January 18th. They are the first people to reach the peak of Dome A (海穹A). It is 4,039 meters above sea level.

The team built a station there to study the changes of the weather, get ice samples (标本) from 150 meters to 200 meters below, and do other studies. So far, the team has got nearly 100-meter-long ice samples from a place about 130 meters under the icecap peak.

It is the first time that people have been able to get samples from the icecap peak in Antarctica and it is very important for people to study the weather changes and environment changes in the area.

The Chinese scientists have also built a weather study system (系统) at the peak. The system can send out information about the temperature, such as how strong the wind is, and many other things about the weather.

The Antarctica icecap makes up (组成) 70% of the earth’s freshwater (淡水). By studying Dome A, scientists can get the lowest temperature of the earth and other information about the world’s weather changes. We can’t get this information from other places on the earth because Dome A is the best place for this kind of studies. So it is very important to land on the peak of Dome A.

1. How many Chinese first landed on the Antarctica icecap peak?
A.18.B.12.C.150.D.200.
2. They built a weather study system to get ________.
A.the earth’s freshwaterB.ice samples from the peak
C.information about the weatherD.the news about other countries
3. Choose the right order (顺序) according to this passage?
① They built a station to study the changes of the weather.
② A Chinese team landed on the Antarctica icecap peak.
③ The Chinese scientists built a weather study system.
④ They got ice samples from the icecap peak.
A.②①④③B.②①③④C.③②①④D.②③④①
4. From this passage, we can infer (推断) that after the Chinese team landed on the Antarctica icecap peak, ________.
A.we can go there for holidays
B.the world’s weather must be better and better
C.the peak will be the best place for people to live in
D.our country will do better in the world’s weather study

【推荐3】Robots seem very new to most people. But they have a long history. The first one was made by a Greek inventor. You may have seen robots in some films. The robots in these films are stronger, faster and cleverer than people. In real life, most robots are used in factories. They are used to do many dangerous, difficult or boring jobs. Some people can’t look after themselves and robots are used to help them. For example, some people can’t see. Many of these people use a dog to help themselves move around. This dog is called a guide dog. Scientists are making a robot to help them. In the future, robot dogs might take the place of these guide dogs.

Robots are also used in American hospitals. At one hospital, a robot takes from the kitchen to the sick people’s rooms. It never loses its way because it has a map of the hospital in its computer system.

根据短文内容,判断正(T)误(F)。

1. The first robot was invented by a Greek inventor.
2. Robots can only be seen in films.
3. Robots can help some people look after themselves.
4. Today’s robots have few uses.
5. A robot is used to help the sick people at an American hospital.
