Many junior 3 students across China recently took the PE test. PE has been more and more important in senior high school entrance examination(中考). Many students have been training hard for it.
Gong Siyu from Sichuan is in eighth grade. She went to an after-school training class. “Since seventh grade, I’ve practised every Saturday evening for two hours, doing Australian pull-ups(斜身引体向上), an 800-meter run and basketball,” she said. In 2024, when Gong takes the test, the PE test will be 60 points(分)in senior high school entrance examination.
“I think it’s a good thing,” Gong said. “Health is important, and by preparing for the test, we get a chance to exercise and relax.”
However, not all students agree with Gong Siyu. Liu Jiawei from Jilin will take the test soon. He often feels tired from practicing every day. “I am not a sportsman. I can’t run fast,” Liu said, “In a simulated(模)PE test, I got only 20 points. This will largely lower my score in the senior high school entrance examination.”
But he also pointed out the advantage of the PE test. “In the past our teachers used our PE classes for other subjects, such as math, but now they are not taking away our PE classes anymore!”
1. How many kinds of exercise does Gong Siyu do every Saturday evening?2. When will Gong Siyu take a senior high school entrance examination?
3. What does Gong Siyu think of the PE test?
4. Where does Liu Jiawei come from?
5. Why did Liu Jiawei get only 20 points in a simulated PE test?

We all know doing exercise makes us healthy. But many of us don’t know which is better, to exercise in the day or at night. Dr. Yang, a famous sleep doctor, advises people to do outdoor exercise for at least 30 minutes a day in the daytime.
Dr. Yang has been doing research on sports and sleep for years. He finds out that those who exercise in natural light for half an hour every day have better sleep and more energy(能量). Dr. Yang himself gets up at 6:30 a.m. Then he usually takes a walk outside. Sometimes, he walks his two dogs in the park in the afternoon with his sunglasses left at home.
Many schools put Dr. Yang’s findings into practice. They made it a rule that students should do outdoor exercise once or twice a day. In some schools, students even formed outdoor running clubs. After some time, most students said they benefited(受益) a lot from outdoor exercise. Now they sleep better and concentrate(集中) more on their studies.

Life in Grade 8 is busy. Among Chinese, math and English, I am fond of
Life used to be fun for teenagers(青少年). They used to see a good film and listen to music in their free time. But for many young people, life is harder now. Jobs are difficult to find. It is hard to find a place to live in. Teachers say students have to work harder than they used to. They are less interested in how to spend their free time and more interested in passing exams. They know that good exam results may get them better jobs.
But teenagers often feel stressed because they have too much homework to do both at school and at home. They have lots of exams to take. They are too busy studying every day. Now more and more teenagers are getting short-sighted because they study too long every day. So they should think of ways to relax themselves. They should make a plan for study and find time to relax as much as possible.
English Online made a survey (调查) on The Ways for Students to Relax . Here are the results: Some think that watching TV is good. Some believe that sometimes playing computer games isn’t a bad way. Others think the best way to relax is to do sports with classmates.

That’s all. Thanks.
If you ask an adult “What do teenagers do in their free time?” Most answers will include watching movies and TV, and hanging out with friends. They probably won’t include reading. But most of these answers are wrong. Fewer teenagers watch TV or go to the movies these days. In fact, they read a lot. They just aren’t reading paper books.
Teenagers read articles on websites and posts on social media. Parents always believe books are better, but they worry that it’s not the right way to practice reading. Actually teenagers get a lot of reading practice these days. Any reading is good for teenagers. It helps them develop skills that they will need later. It can also strengthen their memory and enrich their vocabulary and broaden their horizon(拓宽视野). Teenagers can get to know what is happening in the world online.
However, books are still better because they are easier to focus on. Teenagers can understand and remember more from them. Also, reading books helps teenagers avoid social media.
Parents can help kids read books more often. First, if they make books available around the house, it will be easier for kids to get books. Then, they should read to their kids or give them time to read. Finally, they should set an example to kids by reading books more often. Kids copy the habits that they see.
1. What do most teenagers do in their spare time these days, watching TV or reading?2. Where do teenagers read articles according to the passage?
3. Why are books still better than other reading materials?
4. How should parents set a good example to their kids?
5. How many suggestions does the writer give parents to help kids read books?

Many kids do housework such as doing the dishes, making the bed, and folding the clothes. In exchange, they get some money or other computer time for doing housework. Paying kids for housework is one of the most popular topics, especially at a time when everyone is more careful about money. Some parents think because adults are paid to do their jobs, we should pay kids for everyday housework. But some people don’t think kids should get rewards (报酬) for doing housework. Susie Walton, an expert, believe that by rewarding kids, parents send a message that work isn’t worth doing unless u pet something in return. “Running any kind of housework is a team effort.” Walton said. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and families decide how they want their here to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like what they want.” Other people believe that getting a reward encourages kids to do housework, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to get money. There are also apps (程序) that gives kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed (兑现) either online or in the real world. “Our goal is to give kids lawful power so they can get rewards,” says Chris Bergman “And kids need rewards to help encourage them to do housework.” |

Outer universe space is full of mysteries (神秘) and the exploring (探索) steps has never been stopped since our ancestors began thousands of years ago. After the founding of new China, exploring the universe, developing the space industry (产业) and building a strong country with strong space power have always been our Chinese dreams.
On April 24, 1970, China successfully set off its first satellite, Dongfanghong-1. On October 15, 2003, Shenzhou V carried China’s first man into space, whose name is Yang Liwei. That made China become the third country after the Soviet Union and the U. S. to send an astronaut into space. On October 17 that year, astronauts in Shenzhou XI successfully finished the 33-day-manned task, which was the longest stay in space of China.
In 2019, Chang’e 4 successfully landed on the far side of the moon. That made it possible for us to learn more about the moon. Over the past 70 years, China has made great achievement in human space exploration. While exploring the mysteries of the universe space, technology has also improved our daily life. When you’re struggling to finish a task at work, throwing on some Bach or Beethoven may worth a try. That’s the main conclusion of an experiment on several British workers that found listening to classical music at work can improve productivity by 15%.
An initial(初步的) survey of 2, 000 UK employees said that half of them listen to music on the job. Some of those employees’ bosses reportedly encouraged the practice, but others were strictly against it, believing it might hurt work performance. So, British classical music station Scala Radio and psychologist Dr. Becky Spelman decided on the experiment to find out if background music hurts or lower work efficiency.
Four office workers were asked to transcribe(抄写) two 600-word sets of song lyrics. The first set was transcribed with no music playing, while the other was completed with classical music playing in the background. The first task, completed in silence, was completed in an average time of 20 minutes and 59 seconds. However, the second transcription exercise that involved music was completed in an average time of 17 minutes and 42 seconds. There is a difference of 15% between them.
“Music has very powerful influence on the brain. It affects mood, mental performance and physical performance,” says Dr. Spelman. “When provided with music, we can have a calm, regular beat, it can actually help us to stay calm, reducing our stress, slowing our heart rate, which makes it easier for us to focus on the task at hand.”
1. Why did other bosses strictly against their employees listening to music at work?2. Who took part in Dr. Becky Spelman’s experiment?
3. How was the first set of song lyrics transcribed?
4. What’s the average time of finishing the the second transcription exercise?
