Each year, hundreds of people climb Mount Qomolangma. Most of them do it to achieve a personal dream. But for some, they push themselves up the mountain for other purposes.

On September 24, 2021, Guo Yongjie and the other seven members of a team set out at a height of 5,800 meters. They reached a height of around 6, 200 meters several hours later. This was the second time the Chinese team had climbed Mount Qomolangma in 2021, following their first trip in August.

“Desideria himalayensis,” Guo cried as soon as he saw a plant. He took pictures of the plant from all directions and recorded its height and location right away. It was the first plant they found at a height above 6,000 meters. What made Guo more excited was that some of the siliques (角果) of the plant had divided, which meant the team had a chance to collect its seeds (种子).

To do research, a complete seed sample (样本) needs at least 2,500 seeds. However, since seeds are scarce at high points of Mount Qomolangma, it is hard to collect 2,500 seeds. So the team could only try to collect as many as possible.

In July 2022, after being kept in very low temperatures for nearly a year, the seeds collected on Mount Qomolangina were taken out to test if they were alive. And soon all the seeds germinated (发芽). It means that China has successfully collected and kept those valuable seeds.

A seed carries the hope of life from the moment it comes into being. For China, those seeds have brought more hope to its plant protection.

【推荐1】Thirty years ago, Lake Ponkapog in Hartwell, New Jersey, was full of life. Many birds and animals lived beside the water, which was full of fish. Now there are few birds, animals, and fish. The lake water is polluted. It is in a color of dirty brown, and it is filled with strange plants. How did this happen?

First, we must think about how water gets into Lake Ponkapog. When it rains, water comes into the lake from all around. In the past, there were forests all round Lake Ponkapog, so the rainwater was clean. Now there are many homes around the lake. People often use the chemicals(化学制品)in their gardens. They use other chemicals inside their houses for cleaning and killing insects.

There are also many businesses. Businesses use chemicals in their machines of shops. Other chemicals fall onto the ground from cars or trucks. When it rains, the rainwater picks up all the chemicals from home and businesses and then carries them into the lake. They pollute the water and kill the animals.

Boats on the lake are also a problem. Lake Ponkapog is a popular place for motorboats(汽船). But oil and gas(汽油)from boats often get into the lake. So more bad chemicals go into the water this way.

People in Hartwell are worried. They love their lake and want to save it. Will it be possible? A clean lake must have clean rainwater going into it. Clean rainwater is possible only if people are more careful about chemicals at home and at other chemicals on the ground. And they mustn’t use motorboats any more on the lake. All these may change people’s lives. Only then can Lake Ponkapog be a beautiful, clean lake again.

文章大意:本文主要描述了内向和外向两种不同性格的人。

【推荐3】You are invited to a large party. Loud music is playing, and lots of people are dancing. Do you dance or talk to as many people as you can call all night? Later, you cannot fall asleep—you want more conversations! Or do you prefer a quieter corner? Or perhaps you cannot wait to go home early and relax by yourself.

Which of these people sound most like you? Person A, who tries to talk to everyone and stays late? Or Person B, who prefers to keep quiet and leaves early?

If you said Person A, you are probably more extroverted (外向的). If you said Person B, you are probably more introverted (内向的). Or perhaps you are Person C and fall somewhere in the middle. Introverted and extroverted people are two commonly used words to describe a person’s personality. And they are also commonly misused (误用) and misunderstood (误解).

Introverts may be thought as quiet, shy and timid (胆小的). Extroverts may be thought as brave, confident, loud and full of energy. Introverted and extroverted people may fit those descriptions. But these same descriptions do not define (定义) introversion and extroversion properly.

Introverts and extroverts use their brains differently, and they get their energy differently. Introversion is connected with one’s own mental (精神) life. Extroversion is the opposite. Extroversion is connected with what is outside oneself.

People who consider themselves introverts may say they “need to be alone to charge their batteries (充电)”. However, introverts may still live being social and going to parties. But such activities require time to prepare.

Extroverts may say, “I don’t need ‘alone time’, I feel more relaxed being around other people.” Even so, extroverts can still feel unsure or not confident among other people.

根据短文内容,判断句子正(T)、误(F)。
1. If Person B is invited to a large party, he will prefer a quieter corner and go home early.
2. According to the passage, everyone must be extroverted or introverted.
3. The three words in this passage are used to describe introverts are quiet, shy and timid.
4. Introverts don’t need time to prepare for going to the parties.
5. Extroverts usually make themselves relaxed by staying around other people.
