Shenzhou XIV Astronauts Give First Science Lecture
By Zhao Lei | chinadaily.com.cn Updated: Oct 13, 2022
Students attended the third live class of the “Tiangong Class” series at a primary school in Shenyang, Northeast China’s Liaoning province, Oct 12, 2022. Chinese astronauts gave an open science lecture on Wednesday afternoon from the Tiangong space station for students around the world.
At the beginning of the educational activity, livestreamed worldwide by China Media Group, the crew of the Shenzhou XIV—Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe—showed the audience(观众) their sleeping and living habits inside the Wentian lab module (问天实验舱), which became part of the Tiangong station in July. The astronauts then carried out some experiments inside the space station and explained these experiments to the students.
During the 50-minute lecture, the astronauts also answered questions from students that covered from how to become an astronaut to what kinds of plants will be brought to space in future spaceflights.
Millions of primary and middle school students across China watched the televised event. Nearly 400 invited students in Beijing, Heze, Shandong province, Zhengzhou, Henan province, and Dali, Yunnan province attended the lecture.
This activity marked the third lecture of the Tiangong Class series. It was also the first time that the Shenzhou XIV mission crew gave a lecture. Scientists say those physical experiments (物理实验) are most suitable for space-based science lectures because they are safer and easier to be done inside the spacecraft and can be more clearly and conveniently watched by students than chemical or biological experiments (化学或生物实验).

Headmaster Moncarz said, “If the weather is sunny, the students spend the day outdoors. They can play in the bush or on the grass, learn to fish or hunt, they can also pick apples and oranges and collect leaves and butterflies. At noon time, they cook lunch on an open fire. After school, they learn about the plants around their home or do something they like. There is no homework or classes. The students begin to learn more traditional(传统的)school skills, such as reading, writing and math only after they show an interest in them.”
Well, is this school an “experiment” in education? Headmaster Moncarz answered no, “Most of the students are busy and unhappy in most traditional schools and their parents are worried about that. The idea comes from a lot of study. We just want the students to learn what they want to learn, do what they want to do.”

Most parents and teachers agree that praise can help increase children's self-confidence--the more, the better. However, according to some researchers, only proper praise is good for children. If adults praise everything children do, it makes children look for praise all the time, not trying to do their best. “Teachers should not say things like good job or nice work whenever a child does anything. They should encourage them to continue to improve,” some researchers advise.
Another idea is that children with high self-confidence are happier, and do better at school. About this, Marshall Duke, a researcher in children, says, “High self-confidence brought in by too much praise does not make children happier, get more, or become able to do more. Finding a child’s advantages and developing them can help build confidence more than too much praise can. ” Praise also loses its effect if it is given equally to all students.
“It’s important to tell children the truth about what they’ve done. Honest feedback (反馈) is far better than empty praise,” Duke adds. “People have got into the habit of not telling children when they’re wrong. That makes it hard for them to deal with difficulties when they grow up. That’s just how the world is.”

However, some children are spending too much money on livestream platforms. Earlier this year, a 17-year-old boy in Jingmen, Hubei province, sent tips that added up to 150, 000 yuan to a host, said Chutian Metropolis Daily. That sum of money was his parents’ life savings.
To prevent things like this from happening again, the National Radio and Television Administration introduced a new rule on Nov. 23 to better manage livestreaming services.
The rule bans children from tipping or sending gifts to livestream hosts and performers. It also requires people to log on livestreaming sites with their real names. This new regulation has been welcomed by parents. According to Legal Daily, about one-fifth of five stream viewers in 2019 were children.
“Online shows and livestreaming have become so popular. I always feel worried that my son might become addicted to them or do something that is harmful to his growth.” said Wang Haifeng, a mother of a 15-year-old boy in Beijing. “Stricter management makes me feel safer.”
In addition to the rule, there are some other measures that will be put in place to help manage livestreaming services.
For example, livestreaming platforms will be required to put a limit on how much money people can send to livestreamers. Once the limit is reached, viewers will not be able to send gifts or tips.
Other rules include stopping livestreaming platforms from encouraging viewers to send gifts or tips. Any host who is found doing this will be added to a blacklist, China Daily reported.

On Nov 7, the 41-year-old woman made history. She became China’s first female (女性) spacewalker! Wang, together with astronaut Zhai Zhigang, completed (完成) a 6.5-hour spacewalk. They adjusted (调整) the station’s robotic arm. They also tested the safety of their spacesuits. These spacesuits were made by Chinese.
Since 1984, only 16 women (including Wang) around the world have ever done spacewalks, according to Global Times. But female spacewalks are very important to space exploration (探索), said Yang Yuguang, vice chair of the Space Transportation Committee of the International Astronautical Federation.
Yang said that humans may live on other planets some day. If we don’t let women take part in this, our efforts (努力) would be incomplete (不完整的). We need to study how female bodies adjust to the space environment. That’s why Wang’s spacewalk is important, Yang told Global Times.

【推荐2】What will astronauts eat when a space trip takes years?
“Lots of fresh vegetables,” says Dr. Janet Williams, whose team have spent the last 10 years learning how to grow plants in a space station. And it’s a good thing that she has already started her work, because space gardening can be really hard.
As usual, astronaut George White looked into the closed plant room. He had planted Dr. Williams’s quick-growing seedlings in it, but none of the stems were showing. He opened the room to check and found the problem. The stems weren’t growing upward and the roots weren’t growing downward. On Earth, gravity helps a plant’s stems and roots to find “up” and “down”. However, in the space station, there was almost no gravity.
Dr. Williams suggested a solution: give the plants more light, as plants also use sunlight to find their way. And it worked. When the plants had more light, the stems turned up and the roots went down.
Now Dr. Williams was free to worry about the next problem: Would her baby plants live to flower? Can we grow food on a space journey?
Many plants died in the space station. Dr. Williams thought she knew why: the space plants were hungry for air. Plants live by taking up CO2 from the air. Since a plant uses it up in the air around, the plant needs moving air to bring more CO2 close to its surface. On Earth, the air is always moving—gravity pulls down cold air, and warm air rises. And with these air movements, plants get enough CO2.
Many earlier experiments with plants in space had used closed rooms. Dr. Williams tried a new greenhouse that had a fan to keep the air move. The plants loved it. They flowered and even produced more seeds. Using Dr. Williams’s method, astronaut George completed the first seed-to-seed experiment in space, and moved one plant closer to a garden in space.
“And this,” says Dr. Williams, “is good news for long-term space travel.”

During their six-month stay, they set up robotic arms and did medical experiments among other tasks. Wang Yaping became the first Chinese woman to take a space walk.
It’s not an easy job to do all these things. Chinese astronauts get difficult trainings before going to space. As People’s Daily reported, all the Chinese astronauts are excellent pilots with hundreds or even thousands of hours of flight time. They also receive hundreds of classes to prepare for space travel.
One of the toughest parts is the high-G training. It simulates(模拟) the environment when the spacecraft takes off. Sitting in a super-fast spinning(旋转) machine, astronauts’ face muscles(肌肉) change shape. They cry tears as they spin. Blood can’t flow to their brains properly, causing a lack o£ oxygen(氧气) and even blindness.
Astronauts must operate the spacecraft under these conditions. Another exhausting(使人筋疲力尽的) exercise, as Wang Yaping told People’s Daily, is the underwater training which lasts seven hours each time. It simulates a weightless environment. She had to wear a 200-kilogram suit and do tasks in 10-meter-deep water without eating or going to the toilet. After each training, Wang lost up to 2 kg of body weight.
“We may have to repeat such trainings every single day for years or decades,” said Wang. “But there is no ‘give up’ in our dictionary.”
