When our first grandchild, Noah, was born, we were over the moon with excitement! We had expectations of what he would look like, how he would laugh, and how he would grow and develop like most babies. But unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned.
Noah faced a lot of health problems from the very beginning. It was a difficult and trying time for our family as we watched him struggle. Doctors gave him a label that broke our hearts—“failure to thrive.”
One of the things we take for granted when we have children is their ability to eat. Unfortunately, Noah wasn’ t able to suck (吮吸) like most babies. He couldn’t eat on his own, and it was heartbreaking for us to see him go through so much pain and discomfort. The doctors had to give him a feeding tube just to keep him alive.
One day, while I was at the grocery store, I saw a young mother walking by with her newborn baby. The baby started to cry a little, and in a disgusted (厌恶的) voice, the mother complained that she had to feed the baby again. It broke my heart to hear her complaining about something that I knew so many parents would be grateful for. So, I decided to share with her what Noah was going through. I told her “You have no idea how thankful my daughter would be to feed Noah like you’re able to.’’
Noah is a unique and outstanding boy. Today, he’s 13 years old, and he has come a long way since those early days. He has faced many challenges, but he has also achieved so much. We’re grateful that he can do things today that we never thought would be possible.

I believed that I was right and he was wrong, and Tony believed that I was wrong and he was right. Our teacher, a kind and smart lady, decided to teach us a lesson. She brought us to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large and round object. I could clearly see that it was black. The teacher asked us what color the object was. “White,” Tony answered. I couldn’t believe he said the object was white! “Clearly, it was black!” Another argument started between Tony and me, this time about the color of the object.
The teacher told me to go and stand where Tony was standing and told him to go and stand where I was standing. We changed places, and now she asked me what color the object was. I had to answer, “White.” It was an object with two differently colored sides—from his side it was white, while from my side it was black. “Boys, now, what do you say?” The teacher smiled at us. Tony has been my best friend ever since.
My teacher taught me a very important lesson that day: When you disagree with others, you’d better be in their shoes. That will help you look at the situation through their eyes, and truly understand their ideas and ways of thinking.

I was with my parents and little brothers at the McDonald’s. Since there are only tables with four chairs, I’m always the one to sit at a nearby table by myself. Usually, I’m a little unhappy, but not this time.
A woman was sitting at a table, two tables away. She was young and pretty, not the traditional beauty, but a warm one. She had thick dark-brown hair and wore common clothes, but none of those was why she was so beautiful to me.
Her children spread the ice-cream all over their clothes, and she just kissed them and that’s all. She didn’t get angry. The love and warmth this woman generated(产生) completely changed my view of beauty. She generated warmth like the Sun, and her children were little planets around her.
She made a difference to her children’s lives. Instead of making them feel bad about themselves, she made them feel great about everything. That is true beauty: to make a positive difference to another’s live through warmth and caring.

Che Yin’s story began on a hot summer night. He saw fireflies (萤火虫) flying and an idea came into his mind. He caught some fireflies, put them in a bag and hung it up as a lamp. He spent all of his summer nights reading like this.
The other story happened in winter. Sun Kang woke up on a cold night. He saw the moon shine so brightly (明亮地) on the snow and it made the night brighter. “I can read with it!” he thought. So he took his books outside and read, even though it was very cold.

I cleaned it and started to cut a hole in the cabin wall. It took me more than an hour to make a small hole but, before I could climb through it, I heard the key in the door.
I quickly put an old blanket over the hole, lay down on my bed and closed my eyes. The door opened and Pap came in.
“Well, hello Pap,” I said, yawning and stretching. “Did you get the provisions (生活必需品)?”
Pap didn’t go away again for three or four weeks. We hunted and fished as usual, but he became more and more violent (暴力的) and beat me more often.
While I was fishing one day, an empty boat drifted past me. I couldn’t believe my luck! I jumped into it and paddled (用桨划) down the river to a little place where the branches of the trees hung low over the water. I hid the boat there and went back to the cabin to wait for my chance to get away.
I never saw anyone in the woods but Pap saw some men one day. The next time he went to the town, he gave me his gun. “If anybody tries to get into the cabin, use it!” he said.
That gave me an idea. I took Pap’s gun and climbed out of the hole. Then I went into the woods to look for a pig. I caught one and killed it and took it back to the cabin. I let its blood fall on the floor. After that I took an axe (斧头) and broke the door. I pulled out some of my hair, mixed it with the pig’s blood and put it on the axe. Finally, I put the pig’s body into a bag and pulled it to the river and threw it in.
