My brother was 18 and was in Grade 3 of high school. He knew a lot about the history of Beijing. He told me a lot about it and helped me know more about Beijing and our country on this trip.
We went to the Palace Museum on the first day. We learned more about our history. We bought some gifts there—a book for my sister Lily, a T-shirt for my father and a bag for my mother. And we bought some cards.
My brother was interested in universities (大学) in Beijing and wanted to study in one of them. So we visited the universities in Beijing in the next two days. We had a good time walking by the lake (湖) in Peking University.
On the fourth day, we went to the Great Wall. It was beautiful and there were a lot of people. On the fifth day, we went shopping, tasted much delicious food and went boating in the Summer Palace. The sixth day was a rainy day, and we didn’t go out.

I went to New York with my family on vacation during the National Day holidays. It was sunny and warm. Everything is so great here! People call New York “The city that never sleeps”. Another popular name for it is “the Big Apple”. First we went to the Central Park. It’s really wonderful. Then we went to the Times Square. Times Square is called “the crossroads of the world”. It is very flourishing. There are so many shops and so many people there. You can almost buy everything you want there.

Today is our last day in New York. Tomorrow we will go to Washington D. C. Today we first went to the Empire State Building(帝国大厦), which is 381 meters high. We went right up to the top and looked out across New York. How fantastic it was! After that I bought the biggest hamburger I have ever seen! After lunch we went shopping. Although it is a big city, you can’t get lost because most of the streets have numbers. For example, if you are in Thirty-fourth Street, it’s easy to find Thirty-ninth Street.

①In the eyes of animal lovers, dogs are man’s best friend. However, they can sometimes be dangerous. In August, a 13-year-old boy in Chengdu was hit in his neighborhood by a German dog that wasn’t on a leash (拴绳). The boy ended up in the hospital with several bite wounds. This was just one of several recent accidents across the country in which unleashed dogs have hit people. It has raised a discussion over whether it’s OK to walk dogs without a leash.
②Li Ke is used to walking his dog without a leash. He thinks if dog owners pay attention to their dogs, it’s unlikely that the dogs will hurt others.
③However, Cao Siyuan, from Chengdu, believes people should not walk a dog without a leash, especially in crowded public places. “Leashing dogs stops them from running about or getting hurt,” Cao told Chinanews. “At the same time, it also stops dogs from biting or hitting others when they are angry.”
④Many cities in China have rules saying that owners will be punished if their pets are allowed to run free outside. “But the local rules are not strict,” Guan Xinping, a professor from Nankai University, told China Daily. “Some owners who don’t follow the rules, such as having dogs unleashed, have received no warnings or punishments at all.”
⑤However, some cities have tried to solve the problem in more creative ways. In January last year, Jinan introduced a point system in which dog owners will lose points if they walk the dog without a leash and a dog certificate (证书). If owners lose all their points, they must be trained on how to care for dogs. Their dogs will also be taken away until they pass the training. Thanks to the system, the city saw problems of unleashed dogs go down by 43 percent in 2017 compared to 2016.

You and your mom or dad think you can look after yourself after school. Every weekday, you come home, let yourself in, and then what? This is why you need to make some rules-before you’re home alone.
Some families put up a list of rules where everyone can see them. But whatever way you use, there are a lot of questions to talk about, like: Should you call mom or dad as soon as you get home? On April 5, the State Council (国务院) published new rules about school bus safety. These new rules are stricter than the old ones.
Under the new rules, local governments must make sure that students go to nearby schools or boarding (寄宿的) schools to reduce traffic risks. Also, local governments must help kids in the countryside reach their school buses.
From now on, school buses have a speed limit of 80 km/h on highways and 60km/h on normal roads. While on the road, other cars must let school buses go first.
The new rules also say that school buses must never be overloaded (超载的).
There are many other rules as well. A school bus must have more than seven seats. On each bus, there must be at least one adult(成年人) to keep an eye on the kids. Each school bus must have a fire extinguisher (灭火器), a first aid kit (急救箱) and a GPS.
Last year, a series of school bus accidents happened in China. To stop such accidents, the Central Government decided to strengthen (加强) the rules for school buses.

Another color is green. In China, green usually represents a new life, which has the same culture with Western countries. However, green is also the color of envy (嫉妒) in Western countries. So people may describe someone is “green with envy”.
