【推荐2】It is half past eight in the morning. The telephone rings and Mary goes to answer it.

“Hello, who’s that?” she asks.

“It’s me, Peter.”

Peter is a friend of Mary’s brother, Johnny.

“Oh, hello, Peter. What do you want?” says Mary.

“Can I speak to Johnny?”

“No,” says Mary. “You can’t speak to him now. He is busy. He is getting ready for school. He is eating his breakfast. Grandmother is combing his hair. Our sister Lisa is under the table, putting his shoes on. Mother is getting his books and putting them in his schoolbag. Goodbye. I have to go now. I have to hold the door open. The school bus is coming.”

What do you think of the story? Are you sometimes like Johnny? If so, you need to change your habits (习惯).

“The day before yesterday,” says Josh Peters, 16, “was probably the best day of my life.” On that day, Josh found out that the nation basketball team wanted him to play in the Paralympics (残奥会)!

Amazingly, two years ago, Josh didn’t use to like any sport. “I was so lazy,” says Josh. “The only exercise I did outside school was going to the shops to buy video games!”

On the day before his fourteenth birthday, Josh was crossing the road when a motorbike hit him. The motorcyclist was riding so fast that he didn’t see the red light-or Josh. Josh never walked again.

At first, Josh thought his life was over. “I didn’t hang out with friends. I didn’t answer the calls or emails. I just wanted to be alone.” Then one day he saw a You Tube video about wheelchair basketball. “It looked so exciting,” said Josh, “I wasn’t watching ‘people in wheelchairs’. I was watching great players!”

Josh joined a wheelchair basketball team in Birmingham. “My family live in the city now, but we didn’t then,” explains Josh, “so I got a bus from my village every weekend to attend training lessons. Friends often came with me. I realized how lucky I was to have such great friends.”

Josh wasn’t good at wheelchair basketball at first. “I fell over lots, and I felt like such a fool. I used to play ‘ordinary’ basketball at school, but that’s easy. Compared to wheelchair basketball, it’s slow!” However, Josh didn’t give up, and he quickly impressed his coach, Andy Martin. “Josh’s talent and determination are amazing. He’s a Paralympian already.”

How does Josh feel about his accident now? “Differently. Yes, it changed me. In a good way! Before it happened, I was just an average teenager. Now, I’m competing for my country.”

Ali and Ahmet are both very athletic. Ali and Ahmet both like soccer. But Ali plays it every day and Ahmet plays it only on weekends. Ahmet likes watching soccer games on TV but Ali only likes to play the game, not to watch it. Ali and Ahmet are both outgoing and funny, but Ahmet is a little more outgoing than Ali. Ahmet is also a little more serious about schoolwork. Ali and Ahmer are very popular at school, and they both have a lot of friends.

【推荐2】Millions of people visit Machu Picchu each year. It is an ancient Inca city in the mountains of Peru. Steep(陡峭的) steps and rough paths make the trip a challenge. It used to be nearly impossible for people with a physical disability.

Wheel the World has changed that. The company offers wheel-chair- accessible(可以使用轮椅的) tours of Machu Picchu and other places around the world. “Normally people with disabilities would think that these kinds of places are not possible for them,” Camilo Navarro told reporters. He set up Wheel the World with his best friend, Alvaro Silberstein. Silberstein uses a wheel chair.

Navarro and Silberstein started Wheel the World after hiking Torres del Paine in 2016. It is a national park in Chile. Silberstein was the first person to travel the park in a wheelchair. “Our story went popular,” he says. “We started receiving hundreds of requests from people wanting to repeat this trip.”

Today, Wheel the World runs 40 wheelchair-accessible trips in 55 countries. The company offers cars and hotels with ramps(轮椅). It directs people to accessible(可进入的) bathrooms. It even teaches local guides to help wheelchair users get around.

Wheel the World uses a special wheelchair for the Machu Picchu trip. It can be pushed like a wheelbarrow(独轮车). It also folds up(折叠) and can be put into a car easily. “It's a super strong wheelchair. It allows you to get to every corner in all kinds of places,” Navarro says. “Wherever somebody with a disability want to go, we can get there with that wheelchair.”

Wheel the World hopes to give people with disabilities the same opportunities as everyone else. “The world hasn't been planned for people with a disability,” Navarro says. “It's important to build a fairer and better world.”

Another key piece of technology for maker is 3D printers. You can even use a 3D printer to build your own 3D printer! The usage of these technologies inspires people to be creative. It is clear that Maker Festivals are more and more popular. People come together to experiment (做实验) in the area of art, science, engineering and technology.

What will be helpful for you to become a maker? You need to be creative and willing to play around with some new technologies. You should also want to share your ideas with others. Perhaps most importantly, you can’t be afraid of failure. Innovator (创新者) hardly gets success on the first try. Be wise, be creative, be cooperative (合作) and have fun!
