The 24th Winter Olympics were held successfully in Beijing in 2022. There were many great moments during the competitions. What impressed you most?

“Welcome to China!” This simple greeting from volunteer Sun Zeyu warmed the heart of a US snowboarder (单板滑雪运动员) Tessa Maud at the Olympics opening ceremony (开幕式).

“That guy who had said ‘Welcome to China’ really just makes me cry every time because they volunteers are so nice. We feel so welcomed,” said Maud in the video she shared on Tik Tok.

Sun, a junior student from Tsinghua University, is an example of how Generation Z (people born between 1995 and 2010) promoted cultural and people-to-people exchanges at the Beijing Winter Games. Active and open-minded, they bridge gaps in their own ways. Their pleasant personalities, global vision and new-age thinking made the Games even more fantastic.

Gen Z athletes shared their Chinese travels on social media. Some became big fans of Chinese food. Maud shared what she ate every day on Tik Tok-fried rice, Kung Pao chicken and Peking duck. What to eat each day was a hard choice for her. “Everything is so good,” she said.

Gen Z volunteers served the event with heart and soul. Alexandra Pozhidaeva, 23, from Russia, had a heart-warming moment with her Chinese peers. When the stadium (体育馆) was very cold, they lent her their gloves. She said it was touching as they didn’t know each other.

Another volunteer, Yang Jinhe, 18, started to work on some matters in mid-December. He will also work at the Paralympic Games(残奥会). Back in 2008, he was impressed by the song You and Me. Now he said he really understands the meaning of “you and me” as well as the Olympic spirit of togetherness.

A.The food is not only delicious but also inexpensive.B.It all seems good to her.

【推荐2】Still in shock!I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases. Earlier that evening, I received a call that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can.” cried my mother.

I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were moving from New York to Seattle. Our house was in a mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.

Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there's anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn't know what to ask for.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Peter. He and his wife Donna lived nearby.

“I've come to clean your shoes,” he said.

I asked him to repeat.

“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral(葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”

I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen.Peter got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.

When we returned to clear the dishes, Peter had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining. I couldn't help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.

Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there’s anything I can do …” Instead I try to think of something that man needs, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel(养狗场), or house-sitting(看房子) during the funeral. If the person asks, “How did you know I needed help?” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了墨西哥城的卡蒂亚如何在她的公寓里护理数百只小蜂鸟的故事。

【推荐3】Gently holding a baby hummingbird, Catia Lattou says, “Hello, cute little guy. Are you hungry?” It’s the newest patient at her apartment in Mexico City, where she has nursed hundreds of the tiny birds back to health over the past ten years. Under Catia’s gentle touch, the bird relaxes little by little, allowing her to examine it. This is often how Catia’s days have gone since she turned her apartment into a home for sick, injured or baby hummingbirds.

Catia began caring for hummingbirds a year after surviving colon cancer in 2011. It started with one hummingbird that had an eye injured by another bird. A friend encouraged her to try to help it. She named it Warrior after the brand (品牌) of the glasses case she kept it in. The bird became her inseparable companion, resting on her computer screen while she worked. “It wrote me a new life,” she said of the nine months the bird stayed with her. It helped pull Catia out of the sadness and loneliness she had experienced after her husband’s death followed by her cancer.

Later, friends began bringing her more hummingbirds, and the need for her services has jumped since last year. She began studying how to better care for the tiny birds that are native to the Americans. Someone put a video about her work on the social platform TikTok, which has been viewed more than 1.5 million times.

Catia says she never turns away a bird. She cares for the birds from 5 a. m. into the night. Most of the hummingbirds stay in Catia’s bedroom until they are strong enough to fly and feed themselves before they are finally freed.

The city is filled with menace to hummingbirds. There are other birds that attack them and destroy (毁掉) their home as well as modern building projects that replace flower gardens. But Catia remains positive and is certain that other bird lovers will plant more flowers to feed the birds. “Nothing is ensured,” she said. “But we do everything possible.”

1. What can be learned about Warrior?

2. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph probably mean?

3. How can people help improve hummingbirds’ living conditions?

C.By freeing the injured ones.D.By putting up more buildings.
4. Which best describes Catia?
