Tech company has made a powerful robot that can write novels.
Type in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask the robot to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll get the story of Max, who struggled his way past many difficulties to sing among the stars.
This robot writer is real. It’s called ChatGPT. US company OpenAI developed it to create human-like texts. It can translate languages, communicate with people and write songs, poems and even jokes. It’s one of the most powerful AI of its kind, with the complete writing area of a real person!
People around the world have tried ChatGPT and posted their results on social media. Some used it to write history articles, some asked it to take notes of presentations, and some even formed advice on how to chat with people at a party, reported The Atlantic.
The power of ChatGPT lies in its speed and understanding of difficult matters. We may spend hours researching, understanding and writing an article in a special field. But ChatGPT can produce a well-written one in seconds. Another good thing about it is that if you ask dark, harmful questions, such as how to make gun, it will not give you an answer.
ChatGPT comes along at a time when AI is becoming increasingly able to do creative tasks. The materials they create are difficult to be different from those made by humans. This leads to many problems, such as the copyright and the definition(定义) of art. Since the system is largely trained using words from the Internet, it can also pick up those which are not suitable for certain groups. These are the things humans need to solve.
1. According to the text, if you type in “A cat wants to go to space” to make up a story, what will you get?2. What can ChatGPT do in the complete writing area of a real person?
3. If you have a chance to use ChatGPT, what will you do with it? Why?

Search results are filtered (过滤), so only safe websites are shown and descriptions are written in simple languages. Searches with bad words are shut off, too.
Kiddle uses the same colors as Google in its logo and a similar design on its homepage, too—with an extra robot picture.
The top three Kiddle search results show safe websites and pages written specially for kids, and those websites and pages are well chosen and checked by Kiddle developers.
The fourth to seventh results will be safe and trusted websites that are specially written for children in a simple way.
The eighth and onwards results are not written for children. They provide expert content (权威内容), but are harder for kids to understand.
Unlike on Google, most results appear along with large thumbnail pictures (缩略图) to make it easier for children to find what they are looking for. For example, when searching for “meow meow”, Google produces pages for information about a drug (毒品) that has “meow meow” as its nickname, but Kiddle lists information only about cats, even some cartoon pictures.
The company explained, “Websites which appear in Kiddle search results meet family-friendly requirements, as we filter websites with unhealthy content.”

You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. The spelling of English has always been a problem, but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. In those days people spelt words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn’t made until the time of the Qing Dynasty. Three men did most of the important early work on dictionaries: Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster and James Murray. These men spent nearly all of their lives trying to collect words for their dictionaries.
The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.
Murray had never been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and learned by himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one meter underground. In winter he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o’clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening.
Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, and his two daughters were among them. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It included more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!

Want to have a cold drink during summer? “Ouch!” Suddenly your teeth begin to ache. If eating ice-cream or drinking cold drinks makes your teeth hurt, it could be a kind of protein (蛋白质) called TRPC5 at play.
A new study done by an international scientists team came out on March 26, 2021. It answered a long-lasting question about teeth. Why do cold food and drinks make our teeth hurt? Actually, it means that our tooth enamel(牙轴质), where the TRPC5 is, might have been broken. The research team discovered this protein 15 years ago, but they didn’t know which part of the tooth could feel the change of temperature. Now they know it—it’s in the tooth enamel.
David Clapham from the research team explained how the teeth sense cold. When someone is eating ice-cream, for example, cells(细胞) with TRPC5 in teeth feel a change in temperature and then send information to the brain. The team also found that there is more TRPC5 in bad teeth. That is why people with bad teeth are more sensitive(敏感的) to cold food and drinks. So we should protect our teeth.

The study also explained why clove oil, a centuries-old treatment for toothache, may deal with tooth pain—It can prevent the TRPC5 protein from sending information to the brain.
“Toothache has long been a problem,” Clapham said. “But it is important and it influences a lot of people. Toothache is nothing until you get it.” The researchers believed this study could help develop more useful medicines for toothache.

Space junk includes things like dead satellites, lost pieces of equipment (设备) and small pieces of paint. Such objects can be dangerous to spacecraft and satellites running in space.
The project is an effort from both sides, including the company Sumitomo Forestry and Japan’s Kyoto University. The development team recently announced plans for the satellite in a news release. The researchers say the wooden satellite, which they call LignoSat, is one of several planned projects that try to explore how wood might be used in space in the future.
The design of a wooden satellite model is being developed by researchers from Sumitomo Forestry company and Japan’s Kyoto University. The developers say wood offers several advantages over other materials commonly used to build satellites, such as aluminum (铝) and other metals. For example, the researchers say wood does not stop electromagnetic waves (电磁波). For this reason, wooden structures could be used to house antenna (天线) equipment and other controlling equipment, the team said in a statement. Wooden structures would also be simpler to design and weigh less than present satellite equipment, the researchers added. Such satellites would be better for the environment because they would burn up when returning to the Earth. They would not leave very small pieces of polluting things into the air and oceans.

To protect Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what ancient paint was made of. They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the ancient artwork.
According to their paper published in Science Advances, grains (谷物) and yeast (酵母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were grains and yeast. The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface. Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the paint can also dry faster.
Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study published in Nature Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs can help protect artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the yolk’s proteins (蛋白质) helped slow the oxidation (氧化) of the paint. It could also reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg makes the paint more smooth. However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed fine for artists—they were willing to accept to have their work kept for longer.
The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the more we can “appreciate what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News, Sutherland added that research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.

Venus (金星) is close to the earth. It is similar (相似的) to the earth in size and mass (质量). Scientists have been learning about Venus for a long time. First they looked at Venus through telescopes (望远镜). But Venus is covered with thick clouds. Scientists could not see Venus well through the clouds. So they made guesses about it. For a long time, scientists thought that Venus had water and plants. They thought Venus might have animals too. But they didn’t know for sure.
Then scientists found a way to learn more about Venus. In the 1960s, they began sending probes (航天探测器) to Venus. The probes flew through the thick clouds. They took pictures of Venus up close. The probes sent the pictures and things they found out back to the scientists. The scientists learned that most of their guesses were not right. And they learned that Venus is very hot. They found out many other things too.
They sent new probes later. These new probes took great pictures of the planet. The pictures showed that Venus has plains (平原) and mountains! And in some ways, Venus looks like the earth.

Over 10 years ago, people had to leave their house to buy a train ticket. Now it can be done with a smart phone. Although the fast development of science and technology is making our life easier, it is creating problems for old people. For example, several months ago, an old man in Dalian was not allowed to travel by subway. At the station, he was asked to show his health QR code on the smart phone. He didn’t have a smart phone. In the end, he had to leave the station. Many old people worked hard for the world when they were young, but now it seems that the world has left them behind. What can be done to make a difference? Some volunteers are trying to help. They teach the elderly to use smart phones. However, it only helps to solve part of the problem.
Many old people have physical problems. They can’t see small screens clearly, and their fingers make it hard for them to use touch screens. To solve the problems, perhaps smart phone makers should make screens of the smart phones better so that the old can use them easily.
If you have grandparents or know some elderly people, lend a helping hand to them when they need it. Technologies that you think are easy to learn may be very difficult for them.

When the teacher asks a question in class, Wang Xiaobin never raises his hand and this situation is very common at middle schools. This 15-year-old boy always waits for other classmates or the teacher to give the answer. “What if my answer is wrong?” Wang asks.
Wang said only six or seven students in his class raise their hands when a question is asked. ①“I think the problem influences our studies, but I am afraid of making mistakes in front of my classmates,” he said.
When we asked the teacher, Hu Wei, why the students didn’t raise their hands, he said, “They lack (缺乏) confidence, they are afraid of showing off, or they’re afraid of losing face by giving wrong answers.”
To encourage students to raise their hands in class, Hu suggests that teachers should repeat the question, then try to guide and encourage students to offer their answers. Hu also advised students not to be shy, but brave enough to try.

It takes just a quick glance (一瞥), maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate (评估) you when you meet for the first time. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you. The following chart shows you how impressions are made.
Making Impressions People form a first impression in about four minutes. ● First, they notice your eye contact and body language as well as appearance and clothing. ● Then they notice how you speak—your tone (音调), how fast you talk, how loudly you speak, and how you pronounce your words. ● Finally, they listen to what you say. | |
![]() | When People Listen to You![]() □What they learn comes from the sound of your voice ■What they learn comes from your body language and facial expressions |
With every new meeting, you are evaluated and yet another person’s impression of you is formed. These first impressions can be nearly impossible to change, and they often set the tone (基调) for the relationship that follows. So, it’s important that you know how to create a great first impression. This article provides some useful tips to help you do this.
Plan ahead. First of all, planning ahead is a necessary thing to do. Whether you’re talking in a private room or at a wide hall, the most important thing you can do is to make yourself heard, loud and clear. This can be not easy for an introvert (内向的人)—and for the rest of us. The key: preparation. Feeling prepared will make you relaxed and also improve your confidence.
Making preparations If you’re interviewing for a job, take advantage of the Internet to know the information about the company. If you’re going on a date, plan some talking points, even if they’re just about some favorite TV shows or movies. |
Make proper eye contacts with others while listening to others. Good eye contacts mean the other person is reacting to what you are doing or saying. If someone looks at you while you’re talking, you probably think the person is smart.
Take a proper posture. Finally, a proper posture can also help in making a good impression. Openness can carry the meaning of confidence. To show self-confidence in a meeting, you can sit up straight and leave your arms widely spread at your sides. Holding the posture for just two minutes can lower stress and increase feelings of power.
