How do people greet visitors? Some shake hands. Some say “hello” or “hi”. Some kiss each other on the check. However, the world is made up of many different cultures.

Each country has its unique culture and custom. People from different countries greet each other in unusual and special ways.

New Zealand
The traditional custom of welcome someone is called the “hongi”. In the greeting, two people press their noses and foreheads together and close their eyes. This is an old tradition that comes from the Maori, who were the first people to live in New Zealand. Even today, many New Zealanders still press their foreheads when they meet.

People welcome guests by presenting them with a long narrow scarf called a “hada”. You take it gently in your hands and make a bow.

Flowers are everywhere in Hawaii. People use them to welcome visitors. They put a flower lei(花环) round your neck. They say “aloha” to you!
Thailand
Thai people welcome visitors with a “wai”. They press their own hands together and say “Sawsdee” before bowing their heads. If you hold your hands higher or take a lower bow, you show more respect to others.

【推荐1】Imagine you are in a jumping contest。 Animals and insects can also enter this contest. But they might just leave humans in the dust!

The first event is the long jump. The human athlete is Mike Powell. In 1991, he jumped nearly 30 feet, which is the world record for the long jump. That is about five times his own height.

His competitor in the long-jump contest is a frog named "Rosie the Ribbiter" Rosie set the world record for frogs in 1986 by jumping more than 21 feet. Her record has never been broken by any other frog. Compared to Mike Powell, Rosie's jump is not that amazing. But wait! Rosie is only about 10 inches long when her legs are stretched (伸展) to their full length. She can jump more than 25 times her size. Rosie, the frog, wins the long jump event.

The next event is the high jump. Javier Sotomayor, the world record holder, can jump a bar (横杆) 8 feet high. That is about as high as the ceiling in most homes.

Looking around for someone to challenge his record, Javier might need a magnifying glass (放大镜),The next contestant is a tiny insect called the spittlebug (吹沫虫).

The spittlebug can jump 28 inches into the air. It is only a quarter-inch long, less than the width of a pencil. If the spittlebug were the same size as Javier, it would be able to jump 600 feet into the air. That is like a human jumping over a building 55 stories (层) high!

Though the humans lose the "jumping contest", their competitors would probably agree that Mike and Javier are still pretty excellent athletes. If only Rosie and the spittlebug could speak!

1. In the writer's opinion, Rosie and the spittlebug's jumping abilities are ________.
A.surprisingB.promisingC.helpfulD.fearful

【推荐2】Can you imagine astronauts’ everyday life in space? They also need to eat, sleep, exercise and relax. They do the same things as us, but they do them differently.

On Earth, we put food on a plate. Gravity (重力) holds the food down and keeps it in its place. But there is no gravity in space, so food can float away, and astronauts must eat carefully.

Sleeping is very different in space. Some astronauts like to float in the air, but most like to be in a sleeping bag. They tie the bag to a wall so that they won’t float away at night.

Exercise is very important in space. On Earth, your legs carry your body, but in space, astronauts float, so they do not use their legs often. This is very bad for their legs, so they must exercise for thirty minutes every day.

After a day’s work, astronauts relax. They may listen to music, read, watch films, play games, or talk to their friends and families on the radio. Sometimes they just enjoy floating in space.
