Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews developed the sOccket as part of a group project for an engineering class at Harvard University, the USA.
There are mechanisms (装置) in a sOccket. When you kick, hit or throw it, energy is then kept in it by these mechanisms instead of disappearing into the environment. Then the user can put something directly into the ball, like a lamp, or a mobile phone charger (充电器) so that they can get energy from it. For every fifteen minutes of the game play, the sOccket can provide enough electricity for an LED lamp for three hours. The ball can store up to 24 hours’ electricity.
It was reported that nearly one and a half billion people in the world had no electricity to use last year. And most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and in India and other countries in Asia.
Julia and Jessica both had experiences in developing countries before they began the project. They knew that power shortages are a serious problem in many areas. There is an energy crisis (危机) in the world. And besides that, there are a lot of health problems because what people use instead of the electricity are harmful choices like kerosene (煤油) lamps. They produce a lot of smoke.
Julia says the sOccket ball is one small solution to a big problem. They hope their sOccket ball will shine more light on the problem of power shortages. It offers people a chance to put their energy into the world’s most popular sport and get some energy in return.

The modern erhu developed from the Xiqin, which was played by many ethnic minorities (少数民族) during the Tang Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, musicians began to use the erhu to perform different kinds of music, and it became quite a popular instrument. With the rise of some forms of folk art, the art of the erhu developed quickly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It became an important accompanying (伴奏) instrument in different folk music. At present, it is used in both traditional and modern music, such as in pop, rock and jazz. It has even become a solo (独奏) instrument. One of the most famous musical pieces played on the erhu is Erquan Yingyue.
As the erhu was mainly played by common people and the playing skills were passed down in oral form, so there are few written records about the erhu that can be found. Yuhang in Hangzhou is known for making oil paper umbrellas for over 230 years. But in the 1970s, it was out of production as steel-ribbed(钢骨的)umbrellas became more popular.
In 2015, Liu Weixue gave up a well-paid job as a designer to learn from his grandfather the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas. “I fell in love with the art at a very young age. I want to bring it to life.” Liu said. “When it rains, someone uses the umbrella—that’s what I want to see.”
There are more than 70 steps, including making bamboo ribs and pasting(糊)papers. It takes at least a week to make an umbrella. After mastering the skills, Liu opened a studio(工作坊)and worked with local umbrella-making masters.
Liu improved the umbrellas to win the hearts of young people. As the traditional paper breaks easily, he used a thicker paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed 1,000 times without breaking. He uses a lighter kind of bamboo to make the ribs, so the umbrellas weigh less. As young people like hand-painted pictures, he invites painters to draw patterns(图案)which are not only from traditional culture but also modern cartoon characters.
Since online shopping is popular, Liu opened an online shop to sell umbrellas. It now has more than 80,000 followers. Still, Liu doesn’t hurry. To ensure quality, his studio makes only 1,000 umbrellas each year.
Liu hopes the art will be passed on. He goes to local schools to teach students and shows up at events in different places to promote(推广)the art.

【推荐1】Relationships fade(逐渐消失). People change. But what if we could travel to the past and experience our old memories again?
Lexa Hillyer’s first novel, Proof of Forever, deals with common topics in young adult literature such as friendships, relationships and self-discovery, but is filled with surprises. So it is different from other novels.
The main characters, four seventeen-year-old girls—Joy, Tali, Luce and Zoe promised to be best friends forever. But, like many friends, they grew away from one another as their interests changed. They hardly speak. After Joy asks the friends to get together before they leave for college, a photo booth camera (机器拍照亭) moves the girls around two years back in time to their last summer at camp. The summer will change them forever again.
The main part of the novel is set in the past. The four girls are troubled by the absurdity(荒谬) of their time-traveling failure. With one week of camp left, they finally realize they have to recreate their last summer together to return to the present day. They must learn to work together, or serious problems may happen. Along the way, the girls learn that the past doesn’t necessarily repeat itself—It’s filled with new memories and discoveries.
The main characters are very different from one another, leading to a lot of interesting, humorous moments.
Proof of Forever is not a common story about friendship. Many of its plots(情节), such as losing trust in a parent and finding out one’s secrets, are very exciting. While the storyline might interest younger readers, it is most suitable for readers 15 years old and older.
Because of its many plots and four main characters, the story is sometimes difficult to follow. The storyline jumps from character to character and from problem to problem, resulting in an interesting but confusing (迷惑的) story.
The ending is very surprising. The storyline takes an unexpected twist(转折) that may even result in a few tears. However, the ending needlessly leaves a few questions unanswered and some problems to deal with.
Proof of Forever is a good read, telling the ups and downs of coming of age and the power of friendship in an honest way.

The report, by Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute, examined almost 2,600 research studies on plastic pollution.
Some areas, such as the Mediterranean, East China and Yellow Seas, already have dangerous levels of plastic. Other bodies of water will become more polluted in the future, the report found.
