We want to explore and try to better understand the world in which we live. Space exploration (探索) is one of the ways. Through the exploration of space, we can begin to unravel the mysteries of our universe and to better know our living environment.

Space exploration provides us with knowledge about the beginning of our solar system (太阳系), our own planet and ourselves. It also helps answer the questions that have puzzled us for many years. Solar system exploration is important because it is good for us.

Space technology has become an important part of our daily lives. Some technology uses satellites (卫星) to communicate. Satellites are also used to examine the changes in the Earth’s climate (气候) and seas, for weather report and for military (军事). We also use satellites in food production. Because of the use of space technology in crops, fewer and fewer people will suffer (受苦) hunger.

The space program provides a chance for nations to work together. The cooperation (合作) promotes (促进) peace and understanding between governments and their people. Many governments have taken part in the space technology, including the United States, Russia, Japan, the European nations and India. In the near future, other nations will take part in it. In fact, the United States remains the leader in new space technology.

2. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.Difficulties in space exploration.
B.The advantages of space exploration.
C.The answers to the questions of space exploration.
3. The following are the use of satellites EXCEPT ________.
A.reporting the weather
B.examining the changes of seas
C.changing the climate of a certain place
4. ________ is the best in new space technology.
A.The United StatesB.RussiaC.Japan
5. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.Poor countries don’t agree to explore space.
B.People in different countries have different ideas on exploring space.
C.More and more countries will take part in the space program.

Some scientists believe that Mars is the planet that is more likely to support human life away from Earth.

They believe that it’s possible for humans to reach Mars by 2030. However, there are many things to prepare before this can happen.     1     Recently, scientists have sent robots to Mars to gather information about the planet.

Putting people on Mars will include planning how a person will live on Mars. At its shortest distance Mars is 55 million kilometers away from Earth.     2     And astronauts would have to stay on Mars for over 18 months before Earth and Mars are at their closest distance again. The difficulties would include how much food and other things would be needed for over two years in space and how such things would be carried.

3     They would need to prepare both their minds and bodies for such a long trip away from Earth. NASA set up a special research building in Hawaii. A group of astronauts stayed in this research building for 366 days. During their stay, they had to deal with what they might have to deal with on Mars.     4     They had to live with each other in a very small space. They also had to deal with the problem of having lots of time with little or nothing to do. They couldn’t receive help from people outside for the whole time they were inside.

5     There is no doubt about it.

A.One day humans will be able to live on Mars.
B.Astronauts have been the key to the plan.
C.So it would take about 6 months for a one-way trip.
D.For example, they had to be fed with bad food.
E.Scientists must make some research on Mars well.

【推荐2】①Most people have a place to call home on Earth. What about in outer space? The International Space Station(ISS) became our first “home” in space in 2000. It welcomed its first crew(队) that year, paving the way(铺平道路) for 20 years of future research.

②“You just have this impression that we’re all citizens(公民) of not a country, but of the planet,” former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly told National Geographic about working in ISS. “We’re all in this thing called humanity(人类) together.”

③Over the past 20 years, the ISS has mainly been used as a science lab, hosting 241 people from 19 countries, according to NASA. They have gone on spacewalks, done research on how space affects the human body, and even grown plants in space.

▲ . For example, the station’s water purification(净化) technology has been used in poor areas to provide clean drinking water. The station also helps to warn us of natural disasters(灾难), such as earthquakes.

⑤However, after being our home in space for over 7,000 days, the station is starting to get old. It has leaked(泄漏) air a few times. Scientists think that the station can keep working until 2024. After that, scientists will bring it down to Earth. It is believed that Earth’s atmosphere(大气) will burn up most of the station. Other debris(残骸) will fall into the Pacific Ocean.

⑥In the future, space will be home to more stations like the ISS. NASA is building a space station that is smaller than the ISS near the moon. Also, China will have its own space station up in 2022.

3. Which of the following sentences can be put in the .
A.We don’t know why we call the ISS our first “home”.
B.The station has also done something good to us on earth.
C.You want to know who has visited the ISS over the years.
D.People may wonder how scientists live on the station.
4. If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?

文章大意:本文主要讲述了科学家们探索木卫二上是否存在生命的问题。

【推荐3】“Is there life out there?” is a question which scientists are trying to answer. They look for life in space. In recent years, they have turned their attention to Europa, the sixth closest moon of Jupiter (木星).

Europa is a little smaller than the moon and is covered by ice. Its surface is too cold for anything to live there. Scientists want to know what lies under the ice, for that is where any life on Europa would most likely be.

For years, scientists believed all life on the earth depended on the sun. The discovery of chemosynthetic (化学合成的) life has changed scientists’ idea—planets with oceans (海洋) and hydrothermal vents (热液喷口) might also support life.

Europa does have oceans. In fact, Europa appears to have more oceans than the earth does. The ice on this moon’s surface covers what appears to be moving water. Do these oceans have hydrothermal vents? Scientists do not know yet. If they do, the oceans of Europa might support life. Only a space travel to Europa would tell for certain.

Scientists are studying the closest possible environment they can find on the earth: Lake Vostok. Like Europa’s oceans, Lake Vostok is miles under a frozen surface. It does not receive direct sunlight, either.

So like Europa, the lake cannot support photosynthetic (光合作用的) life. If scientists find life in the lake, it would support the idea that there might also be life on Europa.
