After appearing as a special event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, Wushu, widely known as Chinese Kungfu, will make its first appearance as an official(官方的)sport at the 4th Youth Olympic Games in 2022.
It’s a long-awaited breakthrough(期待已久的突破) for IWF(国际武术协会), which made applications(申请) to IOC(国际奥林匹克委员会) in 2001, 2008 and 2011, but failed. The first two applications were refused at the very beginning. The third application made it to the final voting for taking part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games but missed out once again.
Over the years, both IWF and CWA(中国武术协会) have done a lot to make improvement with strong support from the State General Administration of Sport of China(中国体育总局). The Administration not only offers technical (技术的)support, often sending experts or teachers to help their Wushu training camps, but also generously(慷慨)provides a great deal of Wushu equipment(设备)for free.
Every year, many local Wushu groups are sent abroad to put on Wushu shows, trying to improve the influence of Wushu in foreign countries. Through their continuous efforts, Wushu has become widely popular across the world, especially among young Wushu fans. Studies show that, today, about 120 million people are attracted to Wushu around the world.
China successfully included Wushu as an official Olympic sport in January, 2020, which helps to make it more international quickly.
A total of 48 athletes from across the world will compete in four Wushu events: men’s and women’s Changquan and men’s and women’s Taijiquan.

Golden Generation
This year, several young athletes shone brightly at the Beijing Winter Olympics, giving us a chance to see their generation’s nature.
Obviously, the young generation is filled with “brave fighters” who want to challenge (挑战) impossibilities. Gu Ailing is a good example. After she finished strong in the first two jumps in the women’s freeski Big Air event (女子自由滑雪大跳越), it was certain that she could get a medal. But instead of playing it safe, the 18-year-old skier pushed herself to the limit. On the last jump, Gu decided to try a more difficult trick (动作).
“I’m an 18-year-old girl living my best life. I’m having a great time” Gu said. “It doesn’t really matter whether other people are happy or not, because I feel I’m doing my best and I’m enjoying the whole process.”
Gu’s good friend, Chinese snowboarder Su Yiming also shares a similar attitude. He takes sports as a way to have fun. The 17-year-old boy didn’t feel upset when he was judged to have lost the gold. Instead, he enjoyed the chance to compete with his idol, the Canadian athlete Max Parrot.
“On the podium (领奖台), when my idol hugged me tightly, I was satisfied. All I did today was enjoying the competition and focusing on my tricks. As long as I am on my snowboard, I am delighted.” Su said.
This is the young generation that not only dares to push the limits but also enjoys life.

The Olympic Games (奥运会) are the largest international sporting events. The Games are held every four years, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games taking turns. Each seasonal game happens every four years. The Olympic flag has five colored circles on it. They stand for (代表) the five continents in the world.
Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. The first “modern” Olympics happened in 1896 in Athens—the capital of Greece. Many of the sporting events were the same as they are now. Winners became sports heroes. There were only 311 players from 13 countries. In the year 2000, more than 150 countries took part in the 27th Summer Olympic Games in Sydney. In 2008, Beijing hosted the Olympic Games. The Beijing Olympic Games were one of the most successful sporting events in history.

When we get wet, we need a towel (毛巾) to get ourselves dry. When a dog gets wet, all it needs is to shake its body. A study shows that a wet dog can shake off half the water on its body in less than a second. In fact, this common act of a dog works better than a washing machine.
The study found that animal shaking begins with the head and ends with the tail. During a shake, the animal’s head and skin all move. Smaller animals must shake faster than bigger animals to get water off. For example, in one second, a rat can shake 18 times, a dog 6 times, and a bear 4 times. Bigger animals can get their body with fewer shakes.
For animals, shaking is not just about getting themselves dry. It is also about saving their lives. Being wet makes animals heavier, and that makes them harder to run. In the animal world, how fast an animal can run often decides whether it will live or not. Maybe that is why the “wet-dog shake” has become a common habit of many animals.

Every year, wildfires destroy much forest land. Homes are broken down, and thousands of people die. Smokejumpers are helping to stop this.
Smokejumpers are a special kind of firefighter. ①They jump from planes into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At a fire site, smokejumpers first examine the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main goal is to stop fire from spreading. Using basic tools such as shovels and axes, smokejumpers clear land of burnable material like plants and other dry material. They carry water with them too, but not much.
Although most smokejumpers are men, more women are joining. Most important are your weight and height. Smokejumpers in the US, for example, must be 54 to 91 kilograms, so they don’t get hurt when they land, or get blown by strong winds.
Smokejumpers must be able to live in the wilderness. In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and even make simple furniture from trees.
The work is dangerous, the hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumpers isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires, and live in the forest. As 28-year-old Russian smokejumpers Alexi Tishin says, “②这对身体强壮和勇敢的人来说是最好的工作。”

When two people meet, there are a lot of ways of greeting. But the ways of greeting are not always the same in different countries.
Two people usually greet each other with a handshake in America. It is a way to show respect (尊敬) to the other person. Players from opposite teams shake hands before a game for the same reason. However, most Americans don’t shake hands when they meet people they have already known well. When American friends meet each other, they might only wave (挥手), or maybe just nod their heads.
There is a special way of greeting called “Hongi” (触鼻礼) in New Zealand. In the greeting, two people press their noses and foreheads (前额) together and close their eyes. This is an old tradition that comes from the Maori (毛利人), who were the first people to live in New Zealand. Even today, many New Zealanders still press their foreheads when they meet.
People bow to each other every time when they meet in Japan. Even family members bow to each other. People decide how low to bow depending on how respected the other person is.
Today, new ways of greeting are created all the time. People can do this with a quick “hi”, a handshake, or even a simple smile. The important thing is that the people they are greeting understand them.
1. Why do players from opposite teams shake hands before a game?2. How many countries are mentioned in this passage?
3. Do New Zealanders press their ears when they meet?
4. What do people do when they meet every time in Japan?

Mary |
As for me, I believe “Waste not, want not.” As we know, there are still millions of Chinese living in a poor condition. We can never afford waste. Therefore, it is no doubt that saving is still a good habit that we should not give up. I do not like the men who spend their money in a wrong way. They do not know waste is a bad thing. It can only make them happy for the time being. |
Jacky |
More and more people are no longer interested in the simple life style, including me. And I feel embarrassed to save the things I used. What I love is the latest fashion. In my eyes, saving is already out of style. |

One of the best ways we students can do in this situation is to recycle the textbooks we are using everyday. After we’ve used them and are moving on to new ones, we should find ways to recycle these books instead of simply throwing them away. There are different ways to do so such as sending them to a recycling factory, reusing them for other purposes, passing them on to new students and so on. |
Tim |
The negative effects of waste can be shown as follows. Firstly, it makes some students ask their parents for money quite often, which is harmful to their development. If they don’t learn to support themselves, they will be “useless people” when they graduate. Secondly, it is not easy for our parents to arrange for our schooling. Last but not the least, just like what Mary said that our country is still poor. There are many people who cannot go to university and many poor people still need our help. |

Michael Kraus is a doctor. He did a study which said just listening is better than just watching someone speak. He said people have many ways to show how they feel. They can use words make faces or move their bodies.
Dr. Kraus said something else, too. Sometimes, people’s faces can hide their feelings. They might not want to show they are sad or mad. But it is harder to hide their feelings with their voice. That might be why listening is the best way to know how someone feels.
A new study said you may listen better in the dark, or with your eyes closed. For the study, Dr. Kraus did a few tests and 266 strangers joined the tests. They were put together in pairs. The pairs talked to each other. They talked about movies, TV, food and drink.
The strangers had these talks in two places. First, they talked in a room with the lights on. Next, they talked in a dark room. After talking, the people wrote down their own feelings and what they thought their partners felt. What Kraus found was a surprise. People knew their partners’feelings better when the lights were off.

The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you which mobile phone service provider(提供者) you are using. For example, 135 is for China Mobile Communications Corporation and 188 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is registered(注册). And the last four digits are random(随机的).
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999.Eleven digits can be used to make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That's enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China.
And mobile phone numbers can be recycled. Usually, the service provider will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't contacted(联系) for a long time, you may find that its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot create as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada's mobile phone numbers are perhaps the shortest in the world: they use seven digits.
