To test whether doing something good every day can keep us healthy, I took part in an experiment. Two scientists from King’s College London have provided a lot of help to finish it.
Soon I received a box. Every morning, noon and night for seven days, I collected my saliva (唾液)with some little plastic tubes(管子) and they were sent back to the scientists to get my cortisol (皮质醇)levels.
During the first four days I did what I was told. For the next three days, I did good things. On the fifth day, I found my spirits were lifted and I felt happier. I bought a small box of chocolates for a kind lady at the library. At a flower shop, I opened the door for an elderly woman. For the next two days, I bought sandwiches for a homeless man. I prepared some cookies for my husband and his friends to eat.
After seven days, I collected the saliva and sent it back to London. About two weeks later, I received the results.
They found that during the last three days when I did good things, my cortisol levels were lower than that during the first four days, showing that my stress levels were low. On my first day of doing good things, my cortisol levels are quite high, but by noon they’re down—because I’ve already started doing good things.
I realized that it’s easy to do good things and we may become healthier by helping others.

Sometimes practice does make perfect. Take a math test for example. If you know you're going to have a math test in a week, you can keep doing math exercises before the test. If you get a full mark on your test, that's perfect and you can say the practice helped get you there.
However, in some other fields of life, practice doesn't always make perfect. It doesn't mean that practice is useless. Sometimes it just means that there's no such thing as "perfect in a certain field. For example, if you play sports or a musical instrument, there are no perfect games or perfect shows. It all depends on what you consider to be perfect."
Even if practice doesn't always make perfect, it almost always makes you better than you were before practicing. The more you practice something, the better you are at it.

C.Because life is difficult for us. | D.Because we can never get a full mark. |

C.How to practice for perfection? | D.Does practice always make perfect? |
For example, there are many people who have a billion dollars. Are they successful? Why don’t they stop trying to make more because there will never be enough. They will never be happy enough.
If all that you’re working for is money, you’ll do terrible things to get it. If all that you want is a successful business, you’ll cheat people to get it. If all that you want is fame(名声), you’ll give up your dignity to achieve it.
What’s the real success? For me, being rich or famous is not all to life. I might have a lot of readers now on Zen Habits, but I don't feel that’s what makes me a success. I’ve been a success even when I had no readers, because I was doing what I loved. Even when no one else would have called me a successful man, I loved writing, and I was happy. Success isn’t about achieving something in the future, but about doing something right now that you love.
So forget about success, and just find joy and love right now, in this moment. That is a success you can achieve, without any method. Just go out and do it.

Sammie thought her school could use a Buddy Bench, so she and her mom set down a meeting with the headmaster. They got the information that a local company, Green Tree Plastics, recycles plastic bottle caps into benches. Sammie liked the idea of a Buddy Bench that would help kids and the environment. Her headmaster liked the idea too.
Sammie created a comic (漫画) that showed how a Buddy Bench works. She and her mom posted it on social media to ask friends and families to save caps. They also took the drawing to local businesses to ask for their help.
As words spread, collection boxes at school and around the community began to fill up.
People even shipped their caps to Sammie. “I got caps from 50 states,” she said.
She needed 400 pounds of caps to make one bench. In just two months, the project collected more than 1,200 pounds, which is enough to make three Buddy Benches!
After reaching her goal, Sammie set a new one—“Buddy Benches are everywhere!” So far, she has collected enough caps to give 100 benches to schools in 12 states. A few years ago, I worked in a local shop. While handing an ice-cream to an old woman at the drive-thru(免下车的)window, I noticed that she had a box of what appeared to be purple tomatoes. And they were unusual. When I handed her the ice-cream, I said, “Those tomatoes look delicious! What kind are they?” She laughed and replied. “Here, have some!” Within seconds I had a handful of purple tomatoes.
“Oh, no, you don’t need to give me any!” I said. “Those tomatoes look special and if you sell them, you can get a lot of money.” “Here, have more.” she insisted, and I had six of the prettiest tomatoes I had ever seen. It was awkward(尴尬的)to me, so I said, “Really, you didn’t have to give me any, but I appreciate(感激)it.” The woman smiled again and said, “I hope you enjoy them. And to answer your question, it’s what my family used to plant. So they aren’t like the ones you get in the store.”
I said thanks again, and she left. I thought she was like an adult version(版本)of the tooth fairy: I gave her the ice-cream and she gave me tomatoes.
About two weeks later, my boss at the ice-cream store sent me a text message, “I want to let you know that your gardener dropped off a box of vegetables and some seeds for you. She must be very nice!” Confused(困惑的), I replied, “My gardener?” That night, my boss showed me the box. It was full of tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans. The tomato fairy was back! Why was this woman being so generous(慷慨的)?

Harry Small, a seven-year-old schoolboy in Scotland. He has written a short poem to thank these brave people. The poem is titled ________:
Heroes come in many forms and they don’t always wear capes;
A smile or a word is sometimes all it takes.
They could be a lifesaver: they could be a carer.
They put themselves at risk, doing their bit.
Heroes come in many forms and this is true;
I’m writing this poem to thank every one of you.
THANK YOU
By Henry Small
Harry wrote the poem all by himself. He then typed it on his computer. The boy even learned about phonics and tried to read his poem. A video of him reading the poem has received hundreds of likes on social media. His mother, Michelle, says she is proud of her son.
In order to control the spread of COVID-19, schools across Scotland have been closed. Teachers have been teaching online so that their students can continue their learning at home. Jim King, a leader at Harry’s school, says he is glad to see that many children are making the best out of this terrible period. And they are trying not to let the shutdown of their schools influence their learning. Harry’s poem is a great example of this.
Mr. King calls on other children to follow Harry’s example. Maybe you can also try to write a short poem to thank the unsung heroes around you. Why not give it a go?
