One night as I went to the supermarket to buy some groceries(日用品), something unusual happened to me.It made me review the meaning of life.
As soon as I went through the glass doors, I could tell something unusual was happening at the cash register(收银台). I saw a cashier taking a few items (物品)out of a customer’s bag. The shopper was an old woman. I couldn’t even begin to describe to you how sad this woman looked. I stood there for a second and quickly realized that the cashier was taking items off the bill to cut down the payment.
I walked quickly over to the cash register, pointed to the items that she was about to put behind her and then pointed at my bag, showing that I would pay for them. She understood. After putting those items back in the bag at the register, she again went to help the woman with her card, but it still didn’t work. I looked at the screen to see the number, took some cash out of my bag, handed it to the cashier and then quickly walked away.
The old woman was a bit nervous about her card and didn’t notice me at all. When the cashier told her that she didn’t have to pay a cent, she was confused(茫然的).
I didn’t walk back into the supermarket, but I felt so proud. I was really happy that I was able to help the old woman out and hopefully bring some joy and happiness into her life.
What is happiness? As you can imagine, there are a lot of answers. Some people say that giving is a kind of happiness; it gives people warmth and joy. Some people say that harvest is a kind of happiness; it makes you realize the joy and excitement after the harvest. But I think to help others is a kind of happiness. It is the most valuable experience and it will always warm your heart.

It was break, and Mrs. Ford’s class was playing soccer. Emma kicked the ball hard and it landed in an old park next to the school. Yuki ran to get it, but she fell over an old tire and hurt her knee.
“Mrs. Ford, that old park is awful! No one could play there without getting hurt. Maybe we could fix it up,” said Yuki.
Mrs. Ford sighed (叹气). “I think it would cost at least $11,000. The school can’t pay for it.”
“We could have a school sale to get some money!” shouted Emma.
All the children and teachers thought it was a good idea. They held the school sale on Sunday. Each class had a booth. Some booths had games and prizes. One class sold hot dogs. One class painted people’s faces. Everyone had a great time.
On Monday, Mrs. Ford’s class added up the money from the school sale.
“Oh, no!” Yuki said. “We only made $316!” No one spoke. A few children sighed.
Then the headmaster Mr. Peter came. A reporter from a TV station was with him. After knowing that the children didn’t make enough money, he made the school on the news that night. The reporter said, “Viewers, I know you care about the kids. We are short of money. But we could help fix up this park in other ways. Please think about it.” The whole town learned about the park.
The next week, Mr. Peter came to the classroom and asked Mrs. Ford to bring her class out to the parking lot. The children could not believe what they saw! Several trucks from different stores arrived one by one and brought all the things they needed. That weekend, children, teachers and parents fixed up the park together.
After a week, the park was ready to open. When asked to name the park, Mrs. Ford’s class chose “Rainbow Park”.

We live in a small town in Pennsylvania, US. There are three girls in the Smith family, Amanda, Theresa and me. People often say things to me, like “Oh, the three of you, you’re such nice girls. Your sisters are so pretty and so thin! You’re really nothing like them.” That made me sad.
At school, all of my teachers had taught my sisters. On the first day of school, they said “Oh, the youngest of the three! I hope you’re just like your sisters. They’re such wonderful students.”
People always compared me with my sisters. So I couldn’t help comparing myself with them, too. Theresa was smarter, Amanda was prettier. I began to work hard to be more like them. What my sisters did, I did, too. At last, I became drum major(主鼓手) of our school’s marching band. Both Amanda and Theresa had been drum majors. I became editor of the school’s newspaper. Theresa had been the editor two years before.
But last year, Amanda went to college, and Theresa went to high school. Now I’m by myself at junior high. Everyone knows me, because I’ m the drum major and the newspaper’s editor.
Now I don’t feel like a Smith girl any more. I feel like myself. I’m proud of doing all of the same great things that my sisters did. But the best thing I did was to learn to stop comparing myself with them.

“Hmm...” said Sophie to herself. “I’d like a color that looks bright and cheerful during the day, but welcoming in the evening. It has to be a color that my friends will see from 100 meters away and will make them want to come and visit. It’s not going to be easy to find such a color, is it?” Sophie said to herself. She decided to go and ask her friends for some advice.
“Yellow!” said Tom. “It’s got to be yellow. Yellow is bright, the color of sunshine.” “No. pink is much better!” Amy disagreed. “It’s a soft, sweet color that makes you feel happy when you look at it.” “Don’t listen to them!” shouted Melissa. “You should paint your house blue, the color of the sky.”
Sophie was more confused than ever. “Well, asking you has been no help at all!” she said to her friends. “You all want me to choose your favorite color. If I choose one person’s favorite. I’ll disappoint the others. How can I choose a color that I like and that won’t make my friends argue?” Sophie went home and looked at her paint. Then all of a sudden, she laughed happily.
“I’ve got it!” she called out. Sophie set to work and painted her house in all the colors of the rainbow(彩虹). In the evening, her friends came round to see the results of all her hard work and everyone agreed that the repainted house looked wonderful.
