A man had a horse and a dog. Both of them helped the man in many ways. One night, some thieves (小偷) broke the window and got into the house. The dog heard them and started barking (吠叫). The man quickly got up.
“What is that? A dog! Let’s run.” said the thieves. They tried to run away but were caught by the man and his neighbors.
The man and everyone else were very happy and highly proud of the dog. From that day on, the horse started thinking, “Everyone thinks that the dog is more useful than me.” The horse wanted to show that he could be useful just like the dog, too.
A few days passed. One night, another two thieves came to the man’s house. “We should be careful, friend! I have heard that a dog protects this house.” one thief said to the other. Then, they saw the dog just sitting outside the door. “We had better leave at once.” the other thief said and they left.
Just at that moment the horse thought, “I can start to whinny (嘶鸣) now and people will think that the thieves ran away because of my whinnying.” Then, the foolish horse started whinnying loudly.
When the man heard the sound, he came out but found no thief. He kicked the horse. “This will teach you not to whinny at night,” he said angrily. The horse didn’t know why and felt unhappy.
Just then, the dog came to the horse and said, “It is better to do your jobs than to try to be like me, friend.”

“The problem with your generation is that you always expect to be happy,” my mother once said.
But now I have noticed a change in my thinking. I gradually realize what my mother said was correct. Over these years, many studies have shown that we are crazy about happiness and high personal confidence.
We should also reset our expectations of the future. Don’t expect miracles (奇迹), and accept that no matter how hard we try, feelings of failure and unhappiness will appear from time to time. When we feel sad, it’s often because we have learned something painful but important.
A.Surely happiness was the purpose of living. |
B.Neither could my parents. |
C.That may make us less satisfied with our lives. |
D.Happiness arrives when we are least expecting it. |
E.So it’s necessary for us to accept sad feelings as part of life. |

“What’s the matter, Tom? How’s your trip?” his mother asked with a big smile.
“I failed. The mountain is high and full of big or small stones on the way. I still wanted to go ahead, but I was tired and it was so late that I had to come back,” Tom cried.
“It doesn’t matter. You are only 14 years old after all. You will have another chance,” his mother said.
“But standing at the top of the mountain is my dream!” Tom said.
His father came over and asked, “Did you see the green trees on your way to the mountain?”
“Sure, and there were a lot of beautiful flowers on both sides of the road,” Tom replied.
“Did you hear the birds singing?” his father asked.
“There were many kinds of birds singing in the trees, and the sound was very sweet,” Tom said.
“Did you feel the beauty of nature?” his father asked.
“Yes, the blue sky, the green trees and the colorful flowers made a nice picture,” Tom answered.
“That’s enough!” his father smiled and said. “Please remember, son, reaching the top of the mountain is not the most important thing. You didn’t reach the top of the mountain, but you got a lot on the way.”

I smiled and remembered Dad’s words. Even though my job was the lowest,it made me feel excited. I saw it as a challenge because it was my first job. I learned to be on time and tried to do everything well. In return(作为回报),I was treated with respect(尊重) by doctors, nurses and patients. Each morning I imagined that the dirty dishes would make patients more sick if I were not there to wash them clean. After breakfast was done, I started sweeping the floors of all patient rooms and cleaning toilets. Though I was tired, I wanted the job to be done well, people would say, “That young boy really does a good job.” That gave me a pride. Working in the hospital taught me that being proud of one’s job is important. It does not matter whether the job is sweeping floors or managing a large business. Suddenly, he saw a small house not far away. He could not believe his eyes but he decided to walk closer to have a look.
The small house was abandoned (废弃的), but had a hand pump (泵) inside. “What a blessing!” the man thought. However his over-excitement soon came down when he saw no water coming out of it. As he was about to leave, he noticed a bottle of water in the corner of the room. And there was a piece of paper under that bottle. It said, “Use the water to start the pump. Don’t forget to fill this bottle.”
What should he do now? He stopped and thought for a moment. He could simply drink that bottle of water and save his life immediately. In any case, he had to take a risk—sooner or later. He closed his eyes and picked the second choice finally. To his great pleasure, cool clear water came out of the pump in a glug-glug noise. However, the million dollar question is: How does each competition work with high school barbecue?
According to the rules of competing, all meat must be provided on the day of the competition. No marinating (腌制), or spicing (加香料) before the official start time is allowed. As for the way of judging, all the foods are supposed to be served in the same dishware (餐具). The teams turn in their foods, which include chicken, pork, beef, beans and a dessert.
“We can’t do much except talk to them in the competition, but practices will include going over the basics and showing the kids how to improve some things.” Robbie McClure, the coach of the team said.
The Red Devils barbecue team has a special way to practice and often uses experiences such as cooking for school board meetings, money-raising activities and at-home sports meetings as a way to get better. They’ve cooked in 18-degree weather and in wind storms.
“Our classroom includes sitting down and talking about it for 20 or 30 minutes and then go out and start something and then come back in and do something else,” McClure said. “They keep notebooks and write down and follow up. If you cook in a snowstorm, you have to cook longer because it takes forever.”
“It’s hard to explain, but I like the experience,” TJ Templeton, who has been a part of the program for all three years said.” It’s something you know for a life-long time. You can use it every day, and it’s just really fun competing with your friends.”

Later, they found a large amount of plastic waste in the whale’s stomach. “Sadly, it wasn’t a successful rescue. But it made us know what plastic waste is doing to marine (海洋的) animals,”said Wang.
With the purpose of creating a new balance (平衡)with the ocean and bringing it new life, Wang founded Better Blue in 2017. So far, the organization has had over 1, 000 volunteers from over 20 cities across China. And they have spent more than 9, 000 hours protecting the ocean.
According to Wang, these volunteers are a very young group. One of the reasons is that Better Blue members are mostly divers (潜水员),and diving is a rather young sport in China.
