Hi! What’s going on, guys? It’s Jake. Welcome back to my channel. Why do Americans hate wearing masks so much? The number of confirmed cases (确诊病例) of coronavirus in the US has rapidly increased but there are still some people who are so stubborn (顽固的). No matter how serious the coronavirus is, they’re not willing to wear a mask. What’s the reason behind this? In America, there’s a stereotype (刻板印象): Only patients need to wear masks. Wearing a mask means you have an infectious disease (传染病). So if you wear masks and go out, people will stare at you or even be mad at you. They will think: Why do you still go out and infect other people when you are sick? This is so impolite in America. And in Americans’ eyes, actually, if you’re sick, you should just stay at home.

Americans think wearing masks means protecting other people, but in Asian cultures, wearing a mask means you want to protect yourself from others. And in America, you will see masks only in hospitals and food places because in America, a mask is associated (关联的) with health care. But in Asia, wearing a mask can even become a fashion style. I think this is super ironic (具有讽刺意味的).

Before my Chinese friends told me that America had the coronavirus and I had to wear a mask when I went out, but I said I definitely wouldn’t wear a mask unless it became very serious because in America, most of the people won’t wear a mask unless they’re dying. But now I look back and it’s so ironic. Now in America, if people don’t wear masks, it’s illegal (违法的).

Before the CDC (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) told us we didn’t need to wear masks, and we followed it. I think it’s stupid. I think Americans should change that stereotype. Wearing the mask can protect yourself and others too. Not only should sick people wear masks, but everyone else should also be more aware of this situation and treat it seriously. That’s all for today’s video. Guys, thank you so much for watching.

A.Giving a lesson to a group of young kids.

C.Having a personal interview.
D.Giving his personal opinion.
2. What does the speaker mainly want to tell us in the video?
A.Why should Americans wear masks at present?
B.Why are Americans willing to wear masks?
C.Why should Americans always follow the advice given by the CDC?

3. What stereotype do Americans have?
A.Wearing masks can protect you and others too.
B.Only patients need to wear masks.
C.Wearing masks is a fashion style.
D.Wearing masks may make it hard for you to breathe.
4. What is the speaker’s opinion about wearing masks?
A.In America, wearing masks is against the law.

Iron Man Suit

Have you ever imagined what fun it would be to fly to school? This Iron Man-style suit from a British company could make your dreams come true. The suit allows users to fly just like Iron Man. It can reach a top speed of 80 km per hour. There is a long way to go before this technology is available to everyone, as the suit is still quite expensive — one model is sold for $440, 000 (about 3 million yuan). It is also very noisy.

3D-printed houses

There are 1.2 billion people in the world who don't have a proper house to live in. The 3D-printed houses made by ICON in Texas may help to solve this problem. The company can print a single-storey house of 60m2 in just 12 to 24 hours. The walls of the house are made of a special cement (水泥) that looks like cream. The 3D-printed houses use less cement than normal houses. 100 homes will be built for people in the Republic of Panama this year. Each house costs only $10,000.

Huawei Mate X

Is it possible to fold your phone screen? Huawei's newest phone, the Mate X, is foldable. You can fold it in half as if you are closing a book. The Mate X is very thin, working as both a phone and a tablet (平板电脑). When folded, it works as a phone. When unfolded, it is a tablet.
