We live on Earth. It’s our home. But how much do you know about it? Let me tell you something about our Earth. The Earth is like a huge ball. Like the other seven planets(行星), the Earth is running around the sun. It’s the third nearest one to the sun. It takes the Earth about 365 days to run around the sun. At the same time, the Earth is going around itself. If you are in space, you can see lots of white clouds over the surface(表面)of the Earth. Through the clouds, you can see the blue colour of the oceans, and the brown colour of the land. About 70% of the Earth is covered with water. Why do we have day and night? When the half of the Earth is facing the sun, it’s daytime. As the Earth turns, and this half is away from the sun, night is coming. And it’s daytime for the other half.

1. How many planets are running around the sun?
A.Seven. B.Eight.C.Seventy.D.Ten.
2. ______ of the Earth is covered with water.
A.50%B.30%C.About 70%D.About 30%
3. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?
A.All the planets and stars are running around the sun.
B.The Earth is the nearest planet to the sun.
C.It takes the Earth about 365 days to run around the sun.
D.Only the Earth runs around the sun.
4. When ______, it’s daytime.
A.the Earth is running around the sun
B.the Earth is away from the sun
C.the half of the Earth is away from the sun
D.the half of the Earth is facing the sun
5. Where can you read this passage?
A.In storybooks.B.In newspapers or magazines.
C.In cartoon books.D.In fiction(科幻)stories.

We look at the sun every day.     1

On Sept. 2nd, 2021, China’s Fengyun-3E satellite took its first photo of the sun.     2     The pictures taken are very clear. The satellite was sent into space on July 5th. And by the end of 2021, China released an album of photos taken by the satellite.

One of the satellite’s sides faces the sun all the time.     3     Why is watching the sun so important?

Clear pictures of the sun can help scientists study it more deeply. For example, scientists can better study solar storms. These may affect the weather on Earth.     4     An astronaut would be in great danger if he or she was on the moon during the storm.     5

A.It used China’s solar space telescope (望远镜) to do the job.
B.By watching the sun closely, we can take actions to protect ourselves.
C.Big solar storms may also make our phones stop working.
D.But do you know what the sun really looks like?
E.It can watch the sun’s activity without stopping.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了科学家们探索木卫二上是否存在生命的问题。

【推荐2】“Is there life out there?” is a question which scientists are trying to answer. They look for life in space. In recent years, they have turned their attention to Europa, the sixth closest moon of Jupiter (木星).

Europa is a little smaller than the moon and is covered by ice. Its surface is too cold for anything to live there. Scientists want to know what lies under the ice, for that is where any life on Europa would most likely be.

For years, scientists believed all life on the earth depended on the sun. The discovery of chemosynthetic (化学合成的) life has changed scientists’ idea—planets with oceans (海洋) and hydrothermal vents (热液喷口) might also support life.

Europa does have oceans. In fact, Europa appears to have more oceans than the earth does. The ice on this moon’s surface covers what appears to be moving water. Do these oceans have hydrothermal vents? Scientists do not know yet. If they do, the oceans of Europa might support life. Only a space travel to Europa would tell for certain.

Scientists are studying the closest possible environment they can find on the earth: Lake Vostok. Like Europa’s oceans, Lake Vostok is miles under a frozen surface. It does not receive direct sunlight, either.

So like Europa, the lake cannot support photosynthetic (光合作用的) life. If scientists find life in the lake, it would support the idea that there might also be life on Europa.

In 1997, a spaceship called Cassini was sent to explore Saturn (土星) and its moons. Now Cassini’s mission (使命) has come to an end. Scientists made it fall and burn up in 2017. But before that happened, the spaceship had made many trips between Saturn and its rings, sending photos and other information back to the Earth.
Cassini was a project carried out by NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. It took Cassini about seven years to reach Saturn.
Scientists have learned many exciting things from Cassini. In 2005, Cassini sent a space probe (探测器) to Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, so scientists could get a closer look at the moon’s surface. One of the most important discoveries Cassini made was that there is warm liquid water (液态水) under the ice that covers one of Saturn’s smaller moons, Enceladus. Scientists believe conditions on Enceladus could be similar to the conditions that led to the development of life on Earth.
Cassini’s mission was supposed to be ended in 2008, but because it was still in good shape, scientists increased its life to 2017. Cassini performed the last task of its mission on September 15, 2017.
When Cassini ran out of its fuel (燃料) and entered Saturn’s atmosphere (大气层), it burned up. Scientists said it was necessary for Cassini to be totally destroyed (毁坏) so there was no chance that microbes (微生物) from the Earth could be harmful to any possible life on Saturn.
1. What made scientists think that there might be life on Enceladus?
A.Animals’ waste was found.
B.They heard strange sounds.
C.Some ice was seen to cover it.
D.There is warm liquid water on it.
2. What might happen if Cassini wasn’t totally destroyed?
A.It might destroy Saturn’s surface.
B.It will fall onto the Earth.
C.The microbes from the Earth might be bad for Saturn’s possible life.
D.It will continue to send back information.
3. Which of the following things about Cassini is NOT mentioned?
A.Its findings.B.Its lasting time.
C.Its burning.D.Its later use.
4. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Cassini was a very successful and useful spaceship.
B.Cassini has stayed in Saturn for ten years.
C.The project of exploring Saturn was carried out by America alone.
D.Enceladus is the biggest moon of Saturn.
5. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The process (过程) of sending Cassini to Saturn.
B.The moons and rings of Saturn.
C.The end of Cassini’s mission.
D.The life on Saturn.
