Now, many young people enjoy traveling around the world on their own. It’s not because they have no one to travel with, but because they think traveling alone is exciting and challenging. With no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if you lose your wallet, it is a big challenge. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character-building and a chance to prove that you can make it on your own. It’s exciting and special to travel alone. But it’s also dangerous to travel alone sometimes. So here is some advice for traveling alone.
Don’t choose a hotel if you’re not sure whether it’s safe. If you do, ask for a room near the elevator(电梯), so you won’t need to walk down long in the hallway(走廊). Besides, make sure the clerk writes down your room number.
Don’t arrive at night. Sometimes, areas around bus or train stations can be scary(使人惊慌的) at night, and some small towns may shut down early.
Keep your documents safe. Put your passport, extra money and other important documents in safe places, and use a bag or wallet to carry daily spending money.
Know some common sense. It is very important for staying safe and having an enjoyable time while you are traveling alone. For example, don’t walk around late at night, don’t drink with strangers and don’t take a free car for saving money.
1. Why do many young people prefer to travel alone?2. How many suggestions for travelling alone are mentioned in the text?
3. Who can you ask to write down your room number?
4. Where can be scary at night?
5. How should you deal with the daily spending money when you travel alone?

Tina’s grandma is a kind and adventurous traveler with snow-white hair and a pair of glasses. During the summer last year, Tina and her grandma went to Japan together. They ate delicious Japanese food, visited beautiful temples, and took the high-speed train. Tina’s grandma was so open-minded about the new things they saw there. They also bought funny items from different stores and vending machines (自动售货机) that they would never find in America. They went to Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto, which were all different and very fascinating.
This summer break, Tina and her family flew to visit her grandma in Maine, a state about 3000 miles away from Los Angeles. The town her grandma lives in is small and pretty with many local boutique shops. Her grandma’s house is right on a lake, and they went swimming and kayaking (皮划艇) in the sparkling water. Tina loved jumping of a small bridge and diving into the water. Her grandma’s dog, Paulinka, would join in the fun and jump in the water as well.
Maine is on the east coast and near the Atlantic Ocean, so they ate fish and chips and lobster (龙虾) very often. Sometimes, her grandma took them on a boat to catch lobsters. In a little hidden town, the whole family got to walk in nature, lay under the stars and most importantly, enjoy each other’s company (陪伴).

We heard a lot of stories about New Caledonia, because my father and my mother lived there for a year when they were young. I went to New Caledonia with my father and my elder brother last year.
We stayed there for 3 weeks. It was August in France, and it was summer. In New Caledonia, it was winter, but winter there was like summer at home. It was very hot.
It took us a long time to get to New Caledonia. We took the train to Paris, and then we took the plane for 22 hours! We still made a stop in Japan before arriving in Nouméa, the capital (首都) of New Caledonia.
In this trip, we did not stay in the same place for 3 weeks. We went around the main island (主岛), and we also visited other two small islands.
The views were very different in New Caledonia: we could see white beaches and in the center of the beaches we could find forests. An interesting finding was that the earth (土壤) there was red. What’ s more; there were hills in the North and bushes (灌木丛) in the West.
It was a very nice trip, because the views were beautiful there and the people were very kind. I will visit there again!

Studies found that travel helps children learn a lot. But planning a school trip is not easy. Teachers need to spend much time making sure the trip will go well. Here are some tips (提示) to plan a safe and educational (有教育意义的) school trip. ◊Start planning early You should start planning as early as possible before the trip. There is a lot to do, so it is best to give yourself enough time. ◊Don’t make the trip too long Some children may easily cry because the idea of being away from home makes them become homesick, so short trips are usually the best. ◊Make a clear plan Take a piece of paper and write down your trip plan clearly. What do you want the trip to tell your students? Where do you want to go? What do you do when you first arrive? When do you come back? The clearer your plan is, the better the trip will be. ◊Take care of kids’ safety During the trip, kids’ safety is the most important because accidents may happen if you are not careful enough. ◊Make time for sharing and discussing ◊ Make sure your trip gives kids time to share and discuss — during and after. This can happen at dinner, on the way back or when you come back to school. This will help children learn more. |

Children know that summer is the most fun of all seasons. However, experts(专家) say it is also the most dangerous, especially, for children aged 14 and under. In its first study of children’s safety in the US, the National Safe Kids Campaign(NSKC) found that nearly half of the injury-related(与受伤相关的) deaths among children happen in summer.
Experts are not surprised by the study’s results. They always know summer is a dangerous season for children. During the summer, children are out of school and spend more time outdoors. They are more likely to get into an accident or be hurt.
“While we encourage children to be active and spend time outdoors, they need to understand the importance of safety.”said Everett Koop, an expert of the NSKC.
To help children stay safe, the NSKC started a “Make It a Safe Kids Summer” campaign (运动)during National Safe Kids Week, from May 5 through May 12. Here are some important summer safety tips from the NSKC:
*Always wear your seat belt.

Swimming, splashing and paddling are great ways to move about in the water. On a very hot day we can find many people swimming at a swimming pool, beach or water park. However, we must be careful and take necessary steps to make sure that we do not drown (溺水) because those who do not know how to swim do face the danger of drowning.
It is important to be careful when we are in the water and swim safely. Unlike fish that swim in the ocean, humans can’t swim as well as they can. While fish have gills, which help them to breathe easily in the water. Humans can only depend on their lungs to hold limited air when swimming under water.
To avoid any dangerous situations while swimming, we should always find out how deep the pool is before getting into the water. If the swimming pool is too deep for us, we might not be able to touch the bottom of the pool when we need a break from swimming. This might lead to a dangerous situation if there are no adults or lifeguards around to help us.
It is a good habit to swim with a partner. So, we’d better have an adult to swim with us when we go swimming. If possible, do check that there are lifeguards near the pool before we decide to take a dip in the water. They will be able to offer help if we are in great danger. Lastly, we should follow the pool rules at all times so that we will enjoy ourselves in the water.
1. Where can you find people swimming?2. Why can fish breathe easily in the water?
3. What should we do before we swim in the water?
4. What is a good habit when we go swimming?
5. What does a lifeguard mainly do according to the passage?

How was your sleep last night? World Sleep Day falls on March 21st every year. How can we have healthy sleep? Take a look at these two tips.
◆Waking up naturally
Waking up to a ringing alarm is never fun. Studies showed that when you get “shocked” by the alarm, your breathing will go up from 16 to 24 breaths per minute. Your heart will have 10 more beats every minute. Your blood pressure (血压) will rise.
“This is a very unhappy way to start the day,” sleep scientist Whitney Roman told the online magazine Bustle. You’ll feel worse if you fall back to get a few more minutes of sleep. “This will mess up your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle,” said Roman.
So, what should we do? Try to choose an alarm with softer and lower sounds. Or leave part of the curtains (窗帘) open—the rising sun will wake you up.
◆Sleep early, get up early
Some young people may go to bed late and get up late, such as sleeping from 2 a.m. to 10 a. m. They think as long as they have 8 hours of sleep, everything will be fine.
But in fact, our bodies can tell time. They use light and temperature to do so. If we wake up too late, our bodies might feel stuck (被困的) between sleep and being awake. That’s why sometimes we feel even more tired after oversleeping.
1. When is World Sleep Day every year?2. What will happen to your heart if you are awoken by an alarm?

Rachel Carson (1907—1964) was a pioneer of the world’s environmental movement through her writing about the protection of the natural world.
In 1951 Rachel Carson published her first book The Sea Around Us, which became a bestseller. It made her rich enough to leave her job as a biologist and devote her life to writing.
Her 1962 book Silent Spring ,which made her well known among many people, completely changed the way America thought about nature. It describes the harmful changes in the environment of using harmful chemicals on farmland. It painted a bleak (荒凉的) future for the whole natural world. It led to a nationwide ban (禁止) on the use of a deadly chemical called DDT, and other harmful pesticides (农药) that farmers used for their crops. Many people say the book led to the creation of America’s Environmental Protection Agency. And she became a well-known writer.
Since her death, Carson’s name has continued to be connected with protecting the environment. There is now a yearly Rachel Carson Book Prize. Norway awards the Rachel Carson Book Prize to women who have made great contributions to the field of environmental protection.
