It might be strange to wear clothes made out of plastic bottles. But in fact, some clothing companies are already making such clothes.
Fashion(时尚)brand JUMA recently showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen clothing items from the collection, including jumpsuits, shirts and dresses, were made from recycled plastic bottles.
“We realized that billions of water bottles were being thrown into landfills and oceans every year and that these bottles take hundreds of years to decompose (分解). We thought we should use them to create our clothes and help the environment,” said Alia Juma.
Many other fashion companies are finding similar ways to save our planet these days. The process is rather simple. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are melted(融化)and shaped into small balls. The balls are melted again to form thread(线). People can use the thread to make different kinds of clothes.
According to Juma, it takes 67, 000 bottles to create one ton of thread. This cuts down carbon emission(碳排放).
“Three bottles can make one glove. Five can make a skirt, ten a dress, and twenty a short coat.”
Some people might have doubts about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But according to Causeartist, a website that focuses on innovation(创新), clothes made from plastics could even be better than nylon and polyester(涤纶). Plastic thread can be made into different textures(质地), such as cotton, silk, or even wool. It seem that this innovation may lead to a greener future of fashion.

If you’re like many teens, you probably spend a great deal of your money on clothes. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, clothing sales fell. Now holiday sales might tempt you with deals on the latest styles. Yet many of these bargains (便宜货) have hidden costs for the environment—and your wallet.
“Fast fashion” refers to how the clothing industry quickly produces lots of cheap clothes and gets them to stores every few weeks. The practice lets shoppers buy new styles all the time. And clothes prices are low. But many of these clothes quickly wear out or go out of style. Their price tags also don’t include all of the clothes’ environmental costs.
“The problem starts with how we think about fashion,” says Kirsi Niinimaki. She’s a fashion, textile and design researcher. “Everyone nowadays owns too many clothes. And we use them a really short time and then dispose of them,” she says. Even if something stays in your closet for years, you might only end up wearing it some 40 times.
Kirsi was part of a team that looked at many studies on the environmental costs of the fashion industry. They found that this industry caused 8 to 10 percent of the global emissions of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. The industry is also responsible (有责任的) for about one-fifth of the world’s industrial water pollution. And people produce more than 92 million metric tons of textile and clothing waste each year, the team found. Its report appeared in the April issue of Nature Reviews.
Fashion is a global industry, as Pietra Rivoli learned. She’s an economist at Georgetown University. Rivoli bought a cotton T-shirt in Florida. The tag said it was made in China. But, she learned, the factory had gotten most of its cotton from Texas. Used or unwanted T-shirts are often popular in Africa. There, people sold them for reuse. She wrote about her findings in The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy.
The journey of your own clothes from fiber to finished products comes with environmental costs. Scientists and engineers have been working on ways to limit some of these influences.

At first, the region was made up of the Wu people, who spoke a family of dialects known as Wu Chinese, with 80 million native speakers. Shanghainese is one of them.
Way back in 1950, Mandarin, a dialect from Beijing, became China’s official language. Then in 1992, Shanghainese was banned from use at school when the government pushed for a Mandarin education system.
Many local children today can understand the language, but they can’t speak it well. That’s mainly because Shanghainese is passed on only through family and not formal education.
Luckily, there is the only school in Shanghai still teaching the dialect, LTL Mandarin School. The teacher, Alex Wang, says that, the best way to learn Shanghainese is to find some local friends and make them your personal teacher every time you meet up with them.
Since 2005, efforts have been made to protect Shanghainese. They include more TV programs in Shanghainese, more study of the language, and even use of Shanghainese on some public transport.
One of the people helping pass the language on to today’s youth is Wang Yuanchao who writes and records songs in Shanghainese for school children. “I realize that fewer and fewer kids can speak Shanghainese,” he said.“So I want to give them more opportunities to sing and act out Shanghainese.”

“My family have been watching the ‘Super Girl’ singing competition TV programme. My little daughter asked me what ‘PK’ meant, but I had no idea,” said a Yangzhou father.
To a lot of Chinese young people who have been playing MUD games(多用户网络游戏) online, it is impossible not to know this jargon(行话). In such Internet games, “PK” is short for “Player Kill”, in which two players fight with each other until one ends the life of the other. In the case of the “Super Girl” singing competition, “PK” was used when two singers had to compete with each other for only one chance to go up.
Like this father, Chinese teachers at high schools have also found their students’ compositions, using Internet jargon, difficult to understand. Once a high school teacher from Nanjing asked her students to write compositions, but they came up with a lot of Internet jargon that she didn’t understand. “My ‘GG’ came back this summer from college. He told me I had grown up to be a ‘PLMM’. He always took me to the ‘KPM’...,” went one composition. “GG” means Ge Ge (Chinese pinyin for “brother”). “PLMM” means Piao Liang Mei Mei (beautiful girl). “KPM” is short for KFC, Pizza Hut and McDonalds. “Gr 8”means “Great”. “LOL” has the meaning of “Laugh Out Loud”.
If you don’t even know what a “Kong Long” (a bad-looking girl) or a “Qing Wa” (a bad-looking boy) is, then you’ll perhaps be thought as a “Cai Niao” (a person who starts to use the Internet).
While some language experts agree that Internet jargon is a new development in language, many teachers and parents are worried that too much use of such language may keep the students away from the “right” usages (使用) or make them fail to do well in language exams.
1. The Yangzhou father doesn’t know the meaning of “PK”.2. Many Chinese school students like to use Internet jargon in their speaking and writing today.
3. On the Internet, you can use “GG” and “MM” to show you are very happy.
4. We call a person “Cai Niao” if he or she is a beginner in using the Internet.
5. If you use the Internet jargon in your composition, it will be difficult to understand.
6. “PK” in the Internet games means to help the other.
7. Many teachers and parents think of Internet jargon may keep the students away from the “right” usages of language.
