Mars (火星) is a planet (行星). It is the fourth planet from the sun and is more than 200,000,000 kilometers from it. That is a very long way. Mars is also a very long way away from Earth but sometimes you can see it clearly at night. Most stars are white. But Mars is a little red. It is a very big planet. It is about half the size of Earth. The planet Earth has one moon. Mars has two moons. They are called Phobos and Deimos.
Long ago, the only way to study Mars was just to look at it. People with good eyes could see some things but not everything. Later on, it was easier, because scientists had telescopes (望远镜). They could see Mars come clearly. They learnt much more about Mars this way. In the twentieth century (世纪) things got even better. First of all, we had spacecraft. They flew close to Mars and sent back information. Then, they sent spacecraft to fly around Mars. Finally, spacecraft landed (着陆) on Mars.
Maybe one day a man will walk on Mars.

Scientists think that there has been life on the earth for hundreds of millions of years. However, we have not found life on any other planets yet.
The earth is a planet and it goes around the sun. Seven other planets also go around the sun. None of them has an environment like that of the earth, so scientists do not think they will find life on them. The sun and its planets are called the solar system, and our solar system is a small part of a much larger group of stars and planets, called the Galaxy or the Milky Way. There are billions of stars in the Galaxy, and our sun is only one of them.
Scientists have also discovered many other galaxies in the universe. They are very far away and their light has to travel for many years to reach us. So how large is the universe? 这是无法想象的。
Scientists have sent spaceships to the planet Mars to take photos. They have even sent spaceships to travel outside the solar system. However, no spaceship has travelled far enough to reach other stars in our Galaxy.
Scientists have always asked the questions: with so many stars in the universe, are we alone, or is there life out there in space? Have there been visitors to the earth from other planets? Why has no one communicated with us? We do not know the answers...yet.

But spaceships haven’t travelled so far that they can’t reach other stars in our Galaxy.
The planets and stars are very far away from us. For many years, people have wanted to visit space and the moon. People who go into space are called “astronauts”. The first astronaut went into space about 40 years ago, and some people went to the moon about 8 years later.
Space is amazing. However, it is dangerous in space. Small pieces of rock fly past very quickly all the time. There is no air, so there are no animals or plants. Astronauts have to take air, water and food with them. In space, you can pick up very heavy things easily, but it is difficult to eat and drink. This is very strange for astronauts. For sleeping, astronauts spend the night floating (漂浮) in a sleeping bag.
Besides working, eating and sleeping, what do astronauts spend a lot of time doing in space? It’s exercise. If they don’t take exercise, their bodies start losing bone and muscle(骨骼和肌肉) which makes them weak.
It isn’t good for our bodies to be in space for a long time. Astronauts don’t usually stay in space for very long, but some have stayed for a year without any problems. Perhaps in the future we will all visit the moon or have holidays in space.

Humans have always been interested in the moon. About 2, 000 years ago, scientists had already known that the moon moves around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. In old times, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully at night.
When scientists could use telescopes (望远镜) to study the moon more closely, they found the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that was caught in the earth’s gravity millions of years ago.
In 1969, moon rocks were finally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again, new ideas were needed for this new study.
After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of the earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 million years ago, something that was about the size of Mars hit the earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.
Humans’ steps of exploring the moon will never stop. In the future, even though our ideas about the moon may change again, we’ll still show an interest in it.

•The Blues
The phrase is a short form of “the blue devils”, which also stands for sad feelings. This expression is also used to describe a type of jazz music that became popular in the south of America in the 1940s.
•Black Sheep of the Family
The phrase refers to a member of a family or a group who is unacceptable. In the old days, the black sheep were sold at a lower price than the white ones at the market, because their fleece(羊毛) could not be coloured. This made the black sheep an unwelcome member of the group.
•A Red-letter Day
A Red-letter Day is a day when something really exciting and memorable(难忘的) happens. It came from the practice of marking special western days, holidays, or other festivals in red on the calendar. Today, some calendars still use red numbers for special holidays, even weekends.
•Green with Envy
Writers such as Shakespeare in the 16th century used the colour green to stand for envy, but it was the Greeks who connected it with sickness caused by envy. When a person was full of envy, his or her body produced too much bile(胆汁), giving his or her skin a greenish colour. That is green with envy.
