In Japan, Children’s Day is celebrated on the fifth day of May. But the festival is mainly celebrated by boys, so it is usually called Boys Day. It is a day of wishing for the health and happiness of children.

Japanese parents believe that the carp-shaped flags will bring their children good luck and give them power.

Some people say that western festivals are getting more and more popular in China. As a result, Chinese traditional festivals are being neglected(忽视). The two stories below tell you what is going on with people’s favorite festival.
I moved to Shanghai ten years ago, and my hometown is a small village in Hebei Province. When I was a child, the Spring Festival was the biggest event of a year. I loved this festival best because there was a lot of delicious food to eat. Now things are different. We celebrate not only Chinese festivals but also many western festivals like Christmas, April Fool’s Day and so on. The Spring Festival is still my favorite festival, but with so many festivals to celebrate now, it is not as special as it used to be. Wu Qiang, Shanghai |
I am a 15-year-old middle school student in Foshan. If you ask me what my favorite festival is, I think it is Christmas. In the school, most of my classmates get excited about this festival. Usually my friends and I would start to plan the activities two weeks before Christmas Day, and we may hold a party or sing songs together. This year there will be a band show in an outdoor square. We are all looking forward to it. Also we would prepare each other a Christmas card on that day. My parents can’t understand why Christmas is so popular among young people. I don’t know how to say. But my friends and I really have fun in it, and it is out of fashion if we don’t celebrate Christmas. Lily, Foshan |
2. What’s Wu Qiang’s favorite festival?
3. When do Lily and her friends usually start to plan the Christmas activities?
4. Where are they going to hold the band show this year?
5. According to Lily, why is Christmas so popular among young people?

A TV programme has become popular in China recently. It has made people all over China become interested in writing Chinese characters (汉字).
The increasing use of computers and smartphones has left most young people hardly able to write by hand. Many of them are even unable to remember the 1,000 characters used in daily life without the help of electronic equipment.
CCTV started Dictation Assembly of Chinese Characters to improve the population's handwriting skills. Contestants (参与者) on the show were school pupils, but it was found that 70% of the adults in the audience were unable to remember how to write the word “chanchu”.
Because computers allow people to type characters simply by entering pinyin, they don’t need to remember how to write them. “The keyboard age has had a big influence on the handwriting of Chinese characters,” Guan Zhengwen, who designed and directed the show, said. He added that he hoped to encourage people to keep it alive as an art form.
Hao Mingjian, an editor of a magazine, putting his heart into Chinese characters, said: “Learning Chinese characters goes on throughout your life. If you stop using them for a long time, it is very likely that you will forget them.”

Today, China would like to make its voice heard, by telling true stories. “Storytelling is the best way for international communication,” President Xi Jinping said. “We should tell stories about China well and spread China’s voice well.” Telling Chinese stories warms people’s hearts and brings the Chinese people and people of other countries closer. By listening to true stories of China, many people around the world get to know more about China.
First, a good Chinese story should be about the Chinese national spirit and Chinese cultural confidence. Recently, the hot Chinese movie of The Battle at Lake Changjin has been popular with people around the world. The moves tells an amazing historical story: 73 years ago, the People’s Volunteer Army (PVA) entered North Korea for battle. Under extreme cold conditions, the troops on the Eastern Front bravery fought the enemy at Lake Changjin. Without the great efforts of the soldiers and party members, such success would never be achieved.
Although Chinese culture has continued for thousands of years, we should find a new way to tell Chinese stories. Li Ziqi, for example, has become famous on TikTok for her short videos. She has received tens of millions of likes (点赞) on the Internet. She spread Chinese culture to the world by showing her daily life in the countryside.
Therefore, as a Chinese, learning how to tell a good Chinese story in English is extremely (极其) important. We should fully understand the Chinese culture and learn English well so that the world will have a better understanding of us.

Exam time is the most stressful period of the year. You have worked all school term on your classes and now it’s time to prove what you have learned. With so much at stake (处于成败关头), it is easy to get stressed about your exams. But with the right amount of hard work and focus, you can pass your tests easily.
When I was in school, I used to get very stressed over my exams. So did my friends. Some people stopped eating and others ate too much! Some gave up and others burned themselves out! The most important thing to remember when studying is not to feel frightened! Take the middle path—stay calm, eat healthily and get a rest. Pushing yourself too hard is just as dangerous as not studying enough. A tired, overworked brain is just as useless as a lazy, empty one!
So, what should you do? Firstly, arrange a time each day for study and a time for relaxation. You may have less time to relax than usual, but you still need to let your brain rest for a few moments. Secondly, get enough sleep for at least eight hours a day. If you are tired, information will not stick in your memory. Finally, eat healthy foods that fuel (给……加油) your body and mind.
It is bad to think too much about your exams. Some students may think that the rest of their life depends on them. That’s not true. Instead, just regard the exams as another difficulty you will overcome. You have overcome all kinds of difficulties in your life so far. With the right amount of work and focus, you will pass your exams with flying colors! High school is right around the corner!
1. When is the most stressful period of the year in the passage?2. What is the purpose of having exams?
3. How long should students sleep a day?
4. How many ways are mentioned in the passage to pass the exam easily?
5. How should we regard the exams according to the writer?

A penguin(企鹅) not only wears a white shirt and a black jacket, but it also has a smart yellow tie as well! Maybe because of this, many stories about penguins have been written. However, many of these stories are not right. For example, the penguins in stories always live in the Arctic Circle(北极圈). In real life, there are no wild (野生的) penguins in the northern half of the world.
There are nearly twenty different kinds of penguins in the world. Penguins in stories usually live not only on land, but on snow and ice as well. In fact, many penguins spend most of their lives staying at sea. And most penguins like to live in open water with no ice.
Do penguins sing songs? It is known that there are three kinds of penguin songs.
They talk with each other by singing songs. But most of them don’t talk at all time.
Because talking cuts down energy(能量). So we often see penguins in some small groups in a free walk, or quiet on the beach in the sun.
1. What color(s) are penguins?2. Where do penguins in stories always live ?
3. How many different kinds of penguins are there in the world?
4. How do penguins talk with each other?
5. Why don’t penguins talk at all time?
