Although the Winter Olympics started with just five sports across nine disciplines (项目) in France in 1924, it has grown to include seven sports across 15 different disciplines and has been hosted in 12 countries across three continents (大陆). In February, 2022, for the first time ever in the Games’ history, Beijing became the first city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
China has come a long way (取得很大进展) and achieved many goals since it took part in the Winter Olympics for the first time in 1980. In this short period of time, China’s players have won medals in six of the event’s sports. Short track speed skating (短道速滑) has been an area of expertise (专长) for China.
China’s love for winter sports has been growing. The Ministry of Education ( 教育部) has set a goal of building 5,000 special schools by 2025 to improve winter sports education.
The government has also been encouraging primary and middle schools to add winter sports to their subjects. Many provinces and cities have already acted on this suggestion. Classes will be set up in schools in northern China to improve interest in winter sports. In southern China, schools can work with ice rinks (溜冰场) and winter sports clubs.
Beijing has already set a good example. It is reported that nearly 840, 000 students in the city have begun taking winter sports lessons, including skating and skiing lessons.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 has begun in Qatar. It is the biggest and also the most eye-catching sporting event in the world. But this year’s event looks quite different for two main reasons.
First, it’s the first time in history that the event is happening in winter, from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18. This is because Qatar is a desert country and in summer the temperature can be as high as 42℃. So it’s too hot to play outdoor sports. But it’s still warm in winter. The temperature in the stadiums (体育场) can be around 20℃ to 30℃, which is just right for the event.
Another reason is that Chinese elements(元素), from brand support to construction(建筑), can be found both on and off the field. The idea of “Made in China” is also catching the world’s attention.
According to Global Data, a data analysis and consulting company based in London, Chinese companies have put $1.4 billion (about 10 billion yuan) into the event, making them its biggest sponsors(赞助商).
China Railway Construction Corporation designed and built the Lusail Stadium. With 80,000 seats, it’s the largest of the eight stadiums for the World Cup. As the main stadium, it will hold the closing ceremonies and 10 games, including the final. Besides the stadium, Chinese companies from Guangdong and Zhejiang have provided more than 10,000 container houses for tourists and soccer fans to live in.
“The World Cup sponsorship by a large number of Chinese companies shows China’s economic power and makes the world feel the power of Chinese brands,” Song Xiangqing, vice-president of the Commerce Economy Association of China, told China Daily.

There are many different things that you can do to make friends. You may find out what they are if you watch someone make friends.
Here is how one new teacher made friends with the students in her class on the first day of the school. When the bell rang, the teacher smiled at all the students. Then she said, “ Good morning! How nice it is to have all of you in my class this year! I want to know each of you very much. I am sure we will enjoy working together.”
The teacher smiled, used a pleasant voice, and acted in a friendly way. She told the students her name and wrote it on the blackboard. Then she told them something she liked to do and hoped to do with them during the year. The students knew that she liked many of the same things they liked.
How do you know and like your classmates? One way is to find out more about them. During the break you can talk to them.
