Parents, teachers, and anyone who often deals with teens know how difficult the teen years can be. Teens always do wild and even dangerous things. This was thought to be due to the foolishness of youth. Now, scientists have a new idea of why teens act this way.
Recently, scientists discovered that though our brains are almost at their full size by the age of six, they are far from fully developed. Only during the teen years do our brains truly “grow up”. During this time, they go through great changes. These changes were once thought to be finished by age 12. Now, scientists have found that our brains continue to change until age 25. Such changes make us better at balancing our impulses (冲动) with the need to follow rules. However, a still-developing brain does this clumsily. The result is the unpredictable behavior (行为) in teens.
The studies show that teens prefer to take risks (冒险). Luckily, the news isn’t all bad. As brain scientist B. J. Casey points out, the teen brain inspires (激发) such behavior to help teens prepare for adult life. One way is by changing the way teens measure risk and reward (回报). When teens think about rewards, their brains get more pleasure than an adult brain would. This makes the rewards seem more important than the risks, and makes teens feel the excitement of new experiences more strongly than adults do.
Although teens sometimes make bad decisions for greater rewards, they are still less afraid to try new things. The special period of brain developing is what help teens leave their parents’ care and live their own lives successfully.
1. What is the main purpose of the reading?
A.To advise teens to think the same as their parents.
B.To explain how teen brains affect their behavior.
C.To describe a study on teen brains.
D.To encourage teens to take risks.
2. Which of the following statements about a human brain is NOT true?
A.It is almost at the full size by the age of six.
B.It makes teens less afraid to try new things.
C.It goes on developing until about age 12.
D.It changes the way teens measure risk and reward.
3. The underlined word “clumsily” probably means ________.
A.without skillsB.with hopeC.without dangerD.with warmth
4. What does the author mean by “the news isn’t all bad” in the third paragraph?
A.The teens can get less pleasure than adults.
B.The bad side of the studies is not understood.
C.The way teen brains work has some strong points.
D.The weak points of the teen brain can be predicted.
5. According to the author, the development of the brain in teen years is ________.
A.successfulB.helpfulC.acceptableD.unpredictable

文章大意:本文主要介绍了自然界的动物是如何保护和照看自己的孩子的。

【推荐3】Probably nothing can compare with a parent’s will to protect her child. Let’s see how these animals find ways to protect their children.

Sperm whales are emperors of the ocean. They are also the world’s biggest babysitters(保姆). The mother supports her baby near the surface in order to help it to breathe until it is strong enough to swim on its own. While they are diving for food, however, their young may be unable to follow their parents.

This causes a big childcare problem. How to solve it? A babysitter.

Older whales have an active role. They may be aunts or grandmothers (who can live to 100 or more years old) and they may even be members of other families. They patiently take care of the young whales just under the surface of the water, waiting for the feeding mothers to return.

Elephants give new meaning to the phrase: takes a village to raise a child. “The baby has a huge group of mothers. These mothers take turns to watch over each other’s children.” They are called “all mothers”, helping the new born survive by helping its mother. With their help, the mother can get enough food and provide milk for her child. After carrying a nearly 300 pound baby for 22 months, you’d probably need some rest too!

How far would you go to protect your child? Would you starve(饿死)yourself to help it survive?

Female Octopuses do. An octopus lays between 50,000 and 200,000 eggs each time. Then she separates the eggs into groups based on their size, shape and possibility of survival. She then spends the next two months of her life protecting them. She is so busy keeping them alive. As a result, she doesn’t even have time to feed herself, so she often ends up dying shortly after her eggs hatch(孵化).

1. In what way is the elephant’s way of child care similar to that of the sperm whale?
A.The mother spends 22 months taking care of her baby.
B.Others in the community help the mother take care of her babies.
C.The mother tries to get enough food and provide milk for her child.
D.Older members of the family help the mother take care of her babies.
2. Which is the correct order for a mother octopus to care for her babies?
①She lays her eggs.       ②Her eggs hatch.       ③She dies of hunger.       ④She separates the eggs into groups.       ⑤She works hard to keep her eggs alive.
A.①②③④⑤B.④⑤①②③C.①④⑤③②D.①④⑤②③
3. What is the best title for the text?
A.Three Kinds of Endangered Animals in the world.
B.Animals that Help and Protect Each Other.
C.Amazing Ways Animals Care for Their Young.
D.The Sperm whales, the Elephants and the Octopuses.
