This is yet another success for Chang’e 4. On January 2, the probe (探测器) became the first lander to touch down on the far side of the moon. This is the unknown face of the moon that is always looking away from us, so we never see it from down here on the earth. Although it is often regarded as the dark side of the moon, the far side actually gets as much sunshine as the near side. For example, when all we can see is a silver of a new moon, the far side of the moon is in full sunlight.
Part of Chang’e 4’s mission (使命) is to see how a moon base could be built for humans, including exploring (探索) whether humans could grow food and other plant products there. Change’4 carried a mini-garden with air, water and soil with seeds planted in it. When plants shoot on the earth, their stems grow away from the gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground) and so they always shoot upwards. The moon’s gravity is a sixth as strong as the earth’s, so Chang’e 4’s experiment was a test: would the earth plants know which way was up on the moon? Four days after landing, a tiny cotton shoot showed that they do.
Night has now fallen on the far side of the moon; sunlight will not return until the start of February. As a result, the cotton shoots died. Besides the darkness, the plants can’t stand the cold (it can drop to -170 ℃ on the moon at night). However, the experiment is a success, since it has proved that it is possible for plants to grow in space.

Scientists have always wanted to know more about the universe.
Years ago, they knew many things about the moon. They knew how big it was and how far away it was from the Earth. But they wanted to know more about it. They thought the best way was to send men to the moon.
The moon is about 384,000 kilometers away from the Earth. A plane can not fly to the moon, because the air reaches only 240 kilometers away from the Earth. But something can fly even when there is no air. That is the rocket.
How does a rocket fly? There is gas (气体) in the rocket. When the gas is made very hot inside the rocket, it will rush out of the end of the rocket, so it can make the rocket fly up into the sky.
Rockets can fly out into the space. Rockets with men in them have been to the moon. Several satellites without men in them have flown to another planet much farther away than the moon. One day rockets may be able to go to any place in space.

【推荐3】Our nearest neighbour is the moon. In the sky, the moon and the sun seem to be of the same size because the moon is much nearer.
The moon makes the tides(潮汐)—the changes in the level of the sea. The moon and the sun together pull the sea. In some parts of the world, the difference between “high tide”(when the sea is very near to the land) and “low tide”(when the sea is far away from the land) is very big. This is very important for ships.
The moon is very different from the earth. Gravity on the moon is six times weaker than that on the earth. There isn’t any air. During the day, it is very, very hot but at night it is very, very cold. Nothing can live on the moon.
If the moon goes between the earth and the sun, we have an eclipse(日食) of the sun. The moon stops the light from the sun and we have night in the day.
If the earth goes between the moon and the sun, we have an eclipse of the moon(月食). The moon goes into the shadow(影子) of the earth and it disappears for a few minutes.

Let me tell you something about sharks. Sharks are among the oldest animals in the world. There are over four hundred and forty different kinds of sharks in the world. Whale sharks are about twelve metres long and live in the ocean.
Sharks can smell something in the water, for example, the blood of animals. That helps them find their food. Sharks mainly eat fish, other sharks and plants in the ocean.
Most sharks bite (咬) people by mistake. They think a person is a large sea animal. When the sun rises or goes down, sharks are looking for food. So at that time people shouldn’t go swimming in the ocean.
Today people kill sharks for food and their fins. The number of sharks in the world is dropping fast.

“When you write your shopping list or class notes by hand, you remember what you wrote better later,” said Audrey van der Meer, who did the study.
12 young grown-ups and 12 children took part in the study. This is the first time that children have taken part in such a study. Special machines were used to follow and record (记录) brain wave (电波) activity. Each person wore a special cap with over 250 electrodes on the head, and was asked to write by hand and use a keyboard.
The results (结果) showed that the brain in both young grown-ups and children is much more active when writing by hand than when using a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses become active by holding a pen and pushing it down on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These build connection (联系) between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the results let people know the importance of children’s drawing and writing at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower course, but parents should encourage (鼓励) it because it’s important for children to experience the tiring step of learning to write by hand,” she said.
The hand movements are helpful in some ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand needs control of more skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning condition as often as possible,” Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write a passage, but you should take notes by hand in class.
1. Which is the correct order (顺序) of the research steps?① Record and study the results. ② Put special caps on each person.
③ Find 12 young grown-ups and 12 children. ④ Ask people to write by hand and use a keyboard.

A.People will write their shopping lists from now on. |
B.Young grown-ups should take part in more studies. |
C.Schools may encourage students to write more by hand. |
D.Children won’t use a keyboard to write a passage. |
A.A New Brain Research | B.Shopping Lists or Class Notes |
C.An Important Learning Condition | D.Handwriting or Keyboard |

California study
One study was done by researchers at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly, for short). A research team studied the effects of birdsong on people walking through a park in the U.S. state of Colorado. Danielle Ferraro, led the Cal Poly study.
Ferraro said in some areas birdsong can also tell the arrival of spring and nice weather. Bird diversity (多样化), she adds, can also mean a healthy environment.
Over several weeks, the researchers played recorded birdsong at certain times of the day and other times they did not. Then they talked with hikers (徒步旅行者) after they passed by.
Hikers who heard the recorded diverse birdsongs reported a greater sense of happiness than those who heard simply the natural birds. The researchers suggest that both the bird sounds and bird diversity can increase feelings of happiness.
Ferraro explained that they did the study during the summer. She explains why this is important. “The study took place in summer because the spring is most birds’ breeding (繁殖) season. We didn’t want to disturb (打扰) the birds too much.”
German study
The Science Daily recently reported that scientists in Germany examined for the first time whether a diverse nature also increases human well-being across Europe.
The researchers looked at the “2012 European quality of Life Survey” to study the connection between the different kinds of birds in their surroundings and life satisfaction. They looked at more than 26,000 adults from 26 European countries.
“Europeans are particularly satisfied with their lives if their surroundings have a high species (物种) diversity,” explains the study’s lead author and researcher, Joel Methorst. He and his team found that the happiest Europeans are those who can experience many different kinds of birds in their daily life.
In all, enjoying the birdsong is a good thing for people, so let’s protect birds from now on.
1. What does the word “well-being” mean?A.Warmth. | B.Happiness. | C.Kindness. | D.Satisfaction. |
A.The old people who are happy. | B.The people who live near a park. |
C.The people who are walking through a park. | D.26,000 adults from different countries. |
A.Because they prefer summer. | B.Because they don’t want to disturb the bird breading. |
C.Because there are more birds in summer. | D.Because the birds don’t like singing in spring. |
A.The more birdsongs people hear, the better the environment will be. |
B.The Europeans like to have birds in their homes to make themselves feel happy. |
C.The Europeans are the happiest ones in the world according to Joel Methorst’s team’s finding. |

Researches show that giving up driving is one of the reasons for worse health among older people, leading them to become less active.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe the Boston team is developing in-vehicle (汽车) technologies, including navigation (导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations, to help older drivers continue driving into later life. Phil Blythe explains, “For many older people, especially those living alone or in the country, driving is important for them because it gives them the freedom to get out without depending on others.” “But we all have to accept that as we get older, our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.”
According to Dr Amy Guo, a researcher on the older driver study, the DriveLAB is helping people understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technologies to solve these problems. He said, For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph areas they still kept their regular speed and so they were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of being fined (罚款). We’re looking at the systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that. We hope that our work will help older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”
