Many people dream of going on a great travel adventure(探险). Most of us keep dreaming; others make it happen.
Gregg Bleakney’s dream was to travel the Americas from top to bottom. He got the idea after he finished a 1,600-kilometer bike ride. Gregg’s friend, Brooks Allen, was also a cyclist. The two friends talked and had the plan: they would travel from Alaska to Argentia by bike.
To pay for the journey, Gregg and Brooks worked and saved money for years. Once they were on road, they often camped outdoors or stayed in rest houses so that they wouldn’t spend so much. In many places along their journey, local people opened their homes to the two friends and gave them food.
During their trip, Gregg and Brooks cycled through desert, rainforest, and mountains. They visited different places. And everywhere they went they met other cyclists from all over the world.
Two years, twelve countries, and over 30,500 km later—Gregg finally got to the city Ushuaia, Argentina, at the top of South America.
Gregg and Brooks kept a record(记录)of their adventures in an online blog. The trip taught both men a lot about travelling.
Here is what Gregg advises travellers:
Travel light. The fewer things you take, the less you’ll worry about.
Make flexible plans. Don’t plan everything, then you’ll be more relaxed and happier.
Make yourself a polite person. As one traveler told Gregg, “Always remember that nobody wants to fight, cheat, or rob a nice guy.”

If tourists cause too much traffic, the local people will feel unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and treat them impolitely. But they forget how much tourism can help the local economy(经济). It is important to think about how tourism affects the local people. The local customs and beauty should be kept to attract the tourists by the local government. The local government should also care about the health and happiness of local people when developing tourism.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people can leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry because they can make more money there. As a result, other parts of the local economy can become worse.
On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lost jobs, and businesses can also lost money. It costs much money to build large hotels, airports, first-class roads, and other support facilities(设施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, each room of the first-class tourism hotel usually costs about 50 thousand dollars. If the rooms of the hotel aren’t used most of the time, the owner of the hotel will lose money.
Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity and so on. All of these support facilities cost money. If these facilities are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

Back in Grade 6, soccer was my favorite sport. At first, I wasn’t the best player on the team. After a lot of hard work, by the end of the year, I felt that I was the best player. As the soccer season went on, our team got second place. The next evening there was a dinner party at our school. Most people got awards for outstanding performances (杰出表现). Everyone on the team felt that I would get the MVP award because I got the most goals (进球). But at the end of the party, the teacher stood up and said, “The winner of the MVP award is Kenny.” I was very sad. Some Grade Nine students at Sunshine Secondary School wanted to create a newspaper. They had a meeting yesterday. Daniel wrote this report about their meeting for the principal.
We had a meeting after school. Helen, Tony, John, Millie and I were at the meeting. First, we wanted to choose the chief editor (主编). Tony suggested that we should choose Helen, because she had experience. She was editor of her class Newspaper last year. So we all voted for her. We chose Helen to be the chief editor.

Helen said that the other three would be editors of the paper. They would write for different sections (版面) of the paper. Then we made a list of three things we should discuss — how often should the paper come out? What sections should we have? What should we call the paper?

The worst thing was that Lewis started to call her “Four Eyes”. She acted like she didn’t mind, but in fact, she couldn’t stand it. She was sad.
One day, the class went to visit some caves(山洞). The children were walking towards the caves, when Lewis put his foot in a hole and fell down into it. While falling, he knocked Susan down into the hole, too. It was dark. All that could be seen was only a single ray of light coming from the cave roof. Susan and Lewis shouted for help, but no one came. In the cold dark cave, they spent a long dark night.
The next morning, they still hadn’t been found. Suddenly, Susan had an idea. She took a piece of wood. Then she used her glasses as a magnifying glass(放大镜)and focused(使聚焦)the ray of light onto the dry wood until a little fire sprang up(突然出现). Now they had a torch(火炬). Lewis watched all this with excitement. They used the torch to find the way out.
