From tiny seeds, great discoveries grow. A mini-garden carried on China’s Chang’e 4 Moon Lander recently became home to the first plant to grow on another world.

This is yet another success for Chang’e 4. On January 2, the probe(探测器)became the first lander to touch down on the far side of the moon. This is the unknown face of the moon that is always looking away from us, so we never see it from down here on the earth. Although it is often regarded as the dark side of the moon, the far side actually gets as much sunshine as the near side. For example, when all we can see is a silver of a new moon, the far side of the moon is in full sunlight.

Part of Chang’e 4’s mission is to see how a moon base could be built for humans , including exploring(探索)whether humans could grow food and other plant products there, Chang’e 4 carried a mini-garden with air, water and soil with seeds planted in it. When plants shoot on the earth, their stems(茎)grow away from the gravity(the force that keeps your feet on the ground), and so they always shoot upwards. The moon’s gravity is a sixth as strong as the earth’s, so Chang’e 4’s experiment was a test: would the earth plants know which way was up on the moon? Four days after landing, a tiny cotton shoot showed that they do.

Night has now fallen on the far side of the moon; sunlight will not return until the start of February. As a result, the cotton shoots died. Besides the darkness, the plants can’t stand the cold(it can drop to - 170℃ on the moon at night). However, the experiment is a success, since it has proved that it is possible for plants to grow in space.

Do you think what color oranges are? The common answer to this question is “Orange”. However, the first oranges from Southeast Asia were actually green. Up to now, oranges in warmer areas like Vienam and Tailand still stay green when they are fully grown.

There was a man named John Chapman who planted thousands of apple trees. But the apples on those trees were much more bitter(苦的) than the ones you’d find in the supermarket today. John didn’t expect apples to be eaten whole, but rather made hard apple cider(苹果酒).

Like most four-legged animals, cats have five toes on the front paws, but their back paws only have four toes. Scientists think they four-toe back paws might help them run faster. Do you know any other fun fact about cats?

Walt Disney might have been the first to put gloves on his characters, as the star Mickey Mouse in 1929’s The Opry House(《奥普里之屋》). 文章大意:本文主要讲述了世界各地的汽车制造商生产的汽车越来越少,因为他们得不到足够的电脑零件,以及面临芯片短缺的现状。

Car makers around the world are making fewer cars because they can’t get enough computer parts. Several factories have been closed as a result.

When you imagine car parts, you might not think of computers. But, actually, computer chips (芯片) are important in modern cars. Nowadays a car may have as many as 150 chips. They are used to control many different parts of a car. These days, checking a car’s computer system might be the first step for a repairman to find out what’s wrong with the car.

But now car makers worldwide don’t have enough chips to produce all the cars as planned. As with many recent problems, the trouble has something to do with COVID-19. Last year, as places around the world went into lockdown, many car makers had to close their factories. Since they weren’t making cars, they canceled many of their orders with chip-making companies. So the chip makers started working with computer and smartphone companies and making chips mainly for them.

Now car makers are ready to start making lots of cars again, but there aren’t enough chips. So they are facing chip shortage. How bad is it? A study shows that the chip shortage has already caused car makers to make 500, 000 fewer cars. Ford stopped making cars at its Kentucky factory last December, and has slowed up work at a factory in Germany. General Motors has decided to make fewer cars at its factories in Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States. Honda and Nissan have stopped making cars at some of their factories. Other car factories are also influenced.

Though many car makers have begun looking for ways of dealing with the shortage, the problem is expected to continue for several months.

1. What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The importance of computer chips in cars.
B.The rapid development of computer chips.
C.The use of computer chips in different fields
2. The underlined word canceled has the closest meaning to “________”.
A.placedB.sharedC.stopped
3. Why does the writer talk about the car makers in Paragraph 4?
A.To tell readers the results of the study.
B.To introduce these car factories to readers.
C.To show the influence of the chip shortage on them.
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A.It’s more difficult for a repairman to repair a car now.
B.Many chip-making companies closed because of COVID-19.
C.The writer isn’t hopeful that the chip shortage will be solved very soon.
5. What’s the best title for this passage?
A.Technologies are used in modern cars.
B.Computer chip shortage hits car makers.
C.Computer chips play a key role nowadays.

文章大意:本文主要通过科学实验去证明:人类和狗之间的联系可能对狗也很重要。

【推荐3】If you have a dog, you probably feel a strong bond (纽带) with it. A recent study found that this bond might be important to dogs, too.

Researchers at Oregon State University looked at the relationship between kids and dogs. They asked 30 kids (aged from 8 to 17) who have dogs to join the research.

The kids brought their dogs to a big and empty room. Each kid was asked to walk around the room, sometimes pausing (停顿) or changing direction. “And the dog was left to do whatever it wanted. It could run around the room, or sniff, or lie down or sleep.” says Monique Udell, one of the researchers.

But then they found that most of the time, the dogs didn’t do any of these things. Instead, they stayed close to their young owners and do the same things that they were doing. When the kid walked, the dog usually walked, too. When the kid stopped, the dog stopped. When the kid turned and changed direction, so did the dog.

What does this mean? Udell says it’s a dog’s way of building a relationship with a human. The dogs did this with the kids, even though the kid’s parents are usually the ones who feed and care for them. “The kid may play a brother or sister role in the life of the dog,” Udell says. This shows ___▲___.

So far, Udell’s team has only worked on dogs. But they would like to do similar studies with cats and other kinds of pets. Udell thinks that the animal-human bond spread to them as well.

1. In Udell’s research, the kids were asked to ________.
A.follow their pet dogsB.walk around the room
C.do anything they wantedD.carry things for parents
2. Paragraph 4 mainly talks about the ________ of the research.
A.findingB.meaningC.backgroundD.method
3. Which of the following can be put in the ___▲___?
A.the bonds are important to the dogs
B.humans love to be with their pet dogs
C.kids spend more time caring for the dogs
D.it’s difficult to build a relationship with dogs
4. From the last paragraph, we know Udell thinks that ________.
A.dogs are humans’ best friends
B.cats are much more friendly to humans
C.humans only have the bonds with their pet dogs
D.animal-human bonds might be true for other animals
