The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Because the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night.

At the equator(赤道), day and night are sometimes the same long. They arc each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o’clock in the morning and sets at 6 o’clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole(北极)is tilted(倾斜的)towards the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.

1. According to the passage, the “day” mean ________.
A.24 hoursB.sunriseC.both A and DD.the time between sunrise and sunset
2. According to paragraph 1, when the Western Hemisphere is having day, the Eastern Hemisphere is having ________.
A.dayB.nightC.both day and nightD.neither day nor night
3. At the equator, day is as long as night ________.
A.usuallyB.alwaysC.neverD.sometimes
4. What is the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “Hemisphere”?
A.极地B.地壳C.半球D.地轴
5. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.When the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight, days are longer than nights.
B.Winter is the season of long days.
C.Summer is the season of short days.
D.When the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight, days are shorter than the night.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章阐述了在异国工作或学习的人多数都会思念家乡。

【推荐1】Nowadays, people often go to another county to study or to work. Many find it difficult to adapt (适应), though. According to the research, up to 70% of adults experience homesickness (思乡之情) at some point in their daily life.

Almost anything can cause homesickness—a smell, a taste, even a color can remind them of home. Mohammed Barakat sent us a message on Facebook about his longing for “the smell of rain and green” during the Sudanese rainy season. Mari Damian misses “the smell of Christmas cakes”. “I feel a bit sad today because I am homesick. I miss the delicious plates of spaghetti (意大利面) with a special sauce my mother used to make. She is a great cook. But I work abroad and I have to deal with this kind of felling,” said a young man.

According to Dr. Susan Matt, who wrote a book about the subject, people used to see it as a dangerous disease. The ancient Greek poem Homer’s Odyssey talked about it. But the modern term (术语) was created in the 17th century to describe the feelings of Swiss soldiers, who longed for their homeland wind fighting elsewhere in Europe. They suffered great depression.

Modern technology can limit this feeling, allowing people to keep in touch with loved ones easily. Skype is a lifeline, because it can allow grandparents far away to watch their grandchildren grow up. People should not allow homesickness to stop them living in the present. I follow advice given by Dr. Wood: I write down three new things that I’ve been grateful for every night, as well as three things I’m looking forward to most every morning.

What about you? Have you experienced homesickness? What do you miss when you’re away from your home and family?

B.To tell us many things can make us homesick.
C.to tell us many people live a hard life in other countries.
D.To tell us many adults experience homesickness.
2. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Homesickness.B.Message on Facebook.C.A special sauce. D.Going to another country.
3. Paragraph 3 tells us that ________.
A.homesickness is a dangerous disease
B.homesickness made Swiss soldiers fail
C.Homer’s Odyssey was popular in the ancient time
D.homesickness is not something new

【推荐2】For thousands of years, humans have explored(探索)the Earth. Nowadays, we are exploring space. Astronomers are the modern-day explorers. Now, many astronomers are looking for new planets and new places for humans to live in the future. But where do astronomers start exploring?

First of all, astronomers look for a star. That’s because our own Earth moves around a star—the Sun. More importantly, it is neither too far from nor too near to the Sun for heat and light. So when astronomers have found the star, they look at the planets around it. In recent years, astronomers have found nearly 400 new planets with stars. However, many of these planets are either too near to the star or too far away.

However, if the planet is in a good place, astronomers look for three key things: water, air and rock(岩石). Water is the most important because all life needs water. Humans can drink it and they can also grow plants with water. And plants produce air for humans to breathe and food to eat. Rock on a planet is also important. That’s because there is often water under the rock.

After many years of exploring, astronomers have found a planet like the Earth. It’s Gliese 581g and it’s near a star. The astronomers think it has water and rock and the temperature is between -31°C and -12°C. That’s cold, but not colder than Antarctica or the Arctic Circle, for example, Gliese 581g is bigger than the Earth. A year on Gliese 581g is only 37 Earth days, not 365 Earth days. But astronomers do not think these are big differences and some of them think Gliese 581g will be a new Earth. However, Gliese 581g is twenty light years from the Earth.

1. How do astronomers discover a new planet for humans to live on? Choose the right order.
a. Astronomers look for three key things.
b. Astronomers look for and find a right star.
c. Astronomers look at the planets around the star.
A.a-b-c.B.b-a-c.C.b-c-a.D.c-a-b.
2. According to paragraph 3, which of the following things is the most important?
A.Water.B.Air.C.Rock.D.Food.
3. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.the EarthB.Gliese 581gC.the SunD.Gliese
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Gliese 581g is already a new Earth.B.There are some planets like our Earth.
C.Water, air and rock are important.D.Astronomers are looking for a new Earth

【推荐3】Have you ever thought of owning a garden of yours? It must be a very nice experience for you !
Never let the soil in your garden dry out. If it doesn't rain for a few days and the soil feels dry, water your garden. Be sure the water gets all the way down to the roots of the plants, but don't water too much.
Tall plants need sticks to hold them up. Without sticks, they'll fall over. For example, when your tomato plants get to be about two feet tall, it's time to push a long stick into the gronnd next to each plant.
If' you have planted seeds(种子) , you can expect too many plants to come out. You have to clear some away so that the plants left will have room to grow.
If you've planted lettuce seeds, wait until the baby plants are about l. 5 inches tall. Then, pull some of the plants out so that you leave 8 inches between plants.
Now that you've done all the work, it's time to enjoy what you've got. Pick a red tomato. Eat it while it's still warm from the sun. Or cut it up and put it in a salad. If you have more vegetables from your garden than you and your family can eat, give them to friends and neighbors. It's fun to share the joy you get from your garden with others.
So you can see, work will always make you happy.
