Mobile phones are one of the most useful inventions of the last 50 years, but not everything that is said about them is good. Mobiles are often believed to be the cause of a number of things from poor eyesight and headaches to house fires. There’s even one theory(理论) that mobile phones should be responsible for the disappearance of bees!
The theory is that the radiation(辐射) given off by mobile phones does great harm to bees’ navigation systems(导航系统). Bees have a built-in system a bit like BDS and this helps them find their way back to their hives(蜂巢). But recently, thousands of bees have failed to find their way home. It is believed they are dying far from their hives.
The problem was first noticed by beekeepers in America and is a lot more serious than it seemed at first. The important thing about bees is that most of the crops in many countries are pollinated by them. Without bees, crops can’t continue to grow.
Nobody knows for sure whether the theory is true or not, but it’s a fact that bees are disappearing in very large numbers. And we can’t manage without them. Einstein said that if all our bees disappeared, man would only live for four more years! If the mobile phone theory is correct, we need to do something about it right now before it’s too late.

The boy had never seen a sheep act in this way before, and wanting to find out what the sheep wanted, he began to follow her across the field.
On and on she went, every now and then turning round to see if the boy was coming.
At last she led the way to a place where there was a running stream, and a deep pool of water.
As soon as he came to this spot, the boy saw a little lamb struggling in the water. It had fallen over the bank into the pool below, and was trying to get out.
The poor mother sheep must have known that she needed help to save her little one.

When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration(迁移)is probably the migration of the fish, which is called "salmon". This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mouse. They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside, and many of them are killed when they fall Into the sea.
Recently, scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobster(龙虾). Every year, when the season of the bad weather arrives, the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows why they do this, and nobody knows where they go.
So, sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another, but at other times we don't. Maybe living things just like to travel.

Tom said, “I’m not sure, Uncle Max. Why do you want to go camping?”
“Well, I am going to write a story about endangered animals for the paper. I think it will help with my writing if I go up to the mountains. I just won’t get a feel for nature if I stay in my apartment in the city.”
“Sure, I’ll go with you,” Tom said, “Don’t forget your camera.”
“I won’t.” Uncle Max smiled.
On Saturday morning, Uncle Max and Tom got an early start. After they put up the tent, they sat down to relax. “It seems hard to believe that animals could be in danger in place as beautiful as this,” Tom said.
“You’re right,” Uncle Max said. “That’s why my story is so important. In the past, uncontrolled hunting (捕猎) was the main reason for animal extinction (灭绝). But now, many wild animals in our country are protected by laws. These laws limit hunting.”
“Why are some animals in danger now?” Tom asked.
“Some of their homes are destroyed (破坏) by pollution. Also, the land is used for homes, farms, and highways. That leaves fewer places for animals to live. So some land has to be left as national parks for wildlife,” said Uncle Max.
“I’m glad you invited me,” Tom said. “I just didn’t know how much animals depend on us. I think your story will help all of us.”

A new study has found that most three-year-olds can recall a lot of what happened to them over a year earlier, and these memories persist while they are five and six, but by the time they are over seven, these memories decline(衰退) fast.
Most children by the age of eight or nine can only recall 35% of their experiences from under the age of three, according to the new findings.
The scientists behind the research said this is because at around this age the way we form memories begins to change. They said that before the age of seven children do not have a sense of time and place in their memories. For older children, however, the early events they can recall are usually more adult-like in the way they are formed. Children also have a far faster speed of forgetting than adults. The findings also help to explain why children can often have clear memories of events but then forget them just a couple of years later.
The youngsters first visited the lab(实验室) at the age of three and discussed six events from their past, such as family outings, trips to the zoo and the first day of school. The children then returned for a second period between the ages of five and nine to discuss the same events. The researchers found that between the ages of five and seven, the number of memories the children could recall remained between 63 and 72 percent. However, the amount of information eight-to-nine-year-old children could recall dropped to 35 and 36 percent.

②Japanese researchers have found the secret behind hibernation—the “Q neurons(神经元)”. These neurons in animals’ brains can put them into a hibernation situation. The researchers also did operations on mice after turning on the mice’s “Q neurons”. It turned out that during hibernation, the operations were not so harmful to the mice’s bodies.
③According to the team, humans’ “Q neurons” can’t be turned on or off as easily, as the mice’s. But they are confident in copying the mice’s hibernation in humans. That means we could let people “hibernate” when having operation, which will be less harmful to their bodies.
④In recent years, more scientists are waking up to the advantages of hibernation. For example, US scientist Katherine Grabek found that when the thirteen-lined ground squirrel(多纹黄鼠)hibernates, it cleans out harmful brain plaque(斑块)that is related to(与……有关)Alzheimer’s in humans. The animal’s blood pressure(血压)also goes up and down greatly before and after hibernating. But it doesn’t suffer from any illness related to blood pressure.
⑤Grabek and her team found molecules(分子)from the squirrel that can protect against high blood pressure and heart disease. They hope to find more that may affect human health, and then design medicine.
⑥Some studies in mice showed that, during hibernation, their bodies age more slowly. This also provides new ideas for making humans live longer in the future, according to New Scientist magazine.

Building a single umbrella, which is big enough to cover the whole earth, seems to be impossible. Roger Angel, a scientist from the USA, has carried out research to deal with this problem. He came up with an idea of mini-umbrellas. In fact, each mini-umbrella is made up of two parts, a spaceship and a sunshade(遮阳篷). A spaceship weighing about 1g would carry a sunshade that is half a meter long.It would be mostly transparent. That means light can pass it directly to reach the earth, with lands and oceans clearly in view.
Pressure(压力) from the sunlight would keep the little spaceships in position around the earth at a distance of about 1.5 million kilometers. As a result, sending over 1,000 billion mini-umbrellas into space would reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the earth. This allows sunlight to be reflected(反射) back to space easily, causing the temperature of the earth’s ground to fall off. Covering large areas of the earthman-umbrellas together could reflect 1.8 percent of sunlight back. In Roger’s plan, scientists will send up 800,000 mini-umbrellas at a time, 20 million times in all during ten years. Scientists suggest the earliest launch could be in just 16 years.
Not all the scientists agree with the idea. Some suppose there should be easier and much cheaper ways to prevent the earth from getting too hot, such as to slow down the pollution people bring and to reduce the human activities. Whatever the result of the argument is, this idea of mini-umbrellas in space is certainly creative.

It may take a sharp mind, as an American author says that the search engine giant (搜索引擎巨人) asks its interviewees to answer difficult question.
William Poundstone believes that he has unlocked the secret of how to succeed in an interview at Google in a new book, Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google?
Poundstone lists several of the brain teasers (脑筋急转弯) that are said to be used by Google interviewers, from “can you swim faster in water or in syrup (糖浆)?” to “how would you weigh your head?”
Poundstone told ABC News that any Google’s questions are open-ended on purpose. The interviewer’s goal is to see how the thinking process of the applicant (应聘者) works, and to test his or her creativity when solving problems. He suggests the applicant should “retell the question” in their own words, as doing so gives them time to think and makes sure that they understand what is being asked.
Some of Google’s brain teasers:
* Why are manhole covers (下水道井盖) round?
* How much toilet paper would you need to cover Texas?
* You are shrunk (缩小) to the height of a nickel (五分硬币) and thrown in a blender (搅拌机).
The blades (刀片) start moving in 60 seconds. What do you do?
* How much should you charge (开价) to wash all the windows in Seattle?
* How many times a day do a clock’s hands overlap (重叠)?

A few American middle schools came to Beijing several months ago. They wanted to enrol (招生) some students to go to America. They held a big enrollment meeting. There were a lot of parents and children at the meeting. They were very interested in studying in America. A 12-year-old boy said, “I hear activities after school in America are very rich, so I want to open my eyes there.”
In America, kids can choose the school they like. Most middle schools are two years. And most high schools are four years. One school year needs about 40000 dollars for a Chinese student. It’s still a lot for most Chinese families.
