Because of COVID-19, we have to keep our distance from (和……保持距离) others. But when we want to greet others, what should we do?
★ Do a dance
Do you know Liu Genghong? His workout routines (健身操) are getting popular now. Can you dance with him? When we meet our friends, it must be interesting to dance and it’s a good way of greeting.
★ Wave at the person
Who said waving is only OK when you are far from your friends? Waving at a friend in front of you is OK, too.
★ Give a nod (点头)
A nice head nod can be a cool way of greeting. Maybe doing it in front of a mirror a few times can help you do it better. Many people enjoy this way because they think it’s easy.
★Just say hello
We don’t need to touch others when we greet them. It’s OK to say hello to someone. Then we can ask some other questions, like “How are you?” or “What are you doing?”.
★Send a picture
It sounds funny. Why don’t we just talk to others when we stand in front of them? In fact, sending a picture on your phone makes greeting special and interesting.
★Share hand sanitizer (洗手液)
During COVID-19, nothing is better than giving others some sanitizer to make their hands clean. We can have small talk with each other at the same time.
1. How many ways of greeting others in the passage?2. What does the writer think of giving a nod?
3. According to the passage, which way(s) can make greeting interesting?
4. Where can we read the passage, in the story book, the guidebook or a health magazine?
5. What’s the main idea of the passage?

How will you better yourself in 2024? (Answer in no more than 15 words)
What do you usually do in your spare time? Chatting online is now a national pastime in China, especially among the post-90s and post-00s generation. To some people, however, online chats can seem like a kind of polite conversation. Actually, there are some hidden rules we should follow.
Get to the Point (直入主题)
When sending a friend request, include your real name and any other personal information. We should value other people’s time. If there’s something you want, say it directly. Never send an “Are you there?” without any follow-up messages. The quicker you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.
Send the Right Things
Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type (打字), but what about the person on the other end? They may be unable to listen to a 59-second message right now. Also, never send personal information by voice message—it is hard to note down. Emojis (表情符号) can save the day when you find yourself in an embarrassing conversation, or words fail you.
Try to Understand
You can always judge (判断) a person’s meaning by their text messages. If the person on the other end says “Good night” or “I’m going to take a shower.” That’s probably not what they’re actually going to do, and it is just an excuse to stop talking to you. If someone hesitates (犹豫) for longer than three seconds before saying “Yes”, they probably really mean “No”. If you receive these emojis from friends who are older, read them literally (照字面地) (as a smile, a wave or a laugh). For the post-90s and post-00s generation, however, they could be speechlessness.

Your school days should be the best and happiest days of your life. How can you get the most from them, and be sure you don’t waste (浪费) this great chance to learn?
Be active (积极) at school. Don’t say things are difficult. Take interest in school life and your school subjects. Join lots of activities. Put up your hands quickly in class. Go around the school with a big smile. Teachers cannot make everything enjoyable.
Keep healthy. If you don’t eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and don’t have enough sleep, you will feel tired in class. Play enough sports every day to keep your body strong.
Face the problem. Don’t say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. You cannot finish the race if you rest all the time. Everyone fails (失败) some exams, loses some matches and has a bad day. Don’t forget to ask for help. You are young, and no one thinks you must do everything quite well!
Spend the weekends. Don’t waste time lying in bed on Saturday or Sunday morning. Go and play sports, relax in the park, learn to play the piano and so on. If you don’t want to go out, you can read a book, practice English or help your mum do some cleaning or cooking.
Follow our advice, and have a happy school life!

People know the dangers of fires. It’s good for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. There are some suggestions:
Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.
Make escape (逃) plans. They should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.
Buy fire extinguishers (灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them.
Practice for a fire. They do fire practice because they teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules: Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door. Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be dangerous than fire. The best air is near the floor because smoke rises. What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! Don’t run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll (打滚). Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.
There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, don’t forget to call 119 for help.

Keep a list of phone numbers to call for help. Such as 110, the police station or a neighbour’s number.
Be careful with the electrical appliances(电器). If you don’t know how to use them, ask you parents. Make a safety check before going to sleep.
Look through the door viewer when you hear the doorbell. If there are strangers, ask “Who’s that?” with the door locked and say “Come back later.” Don’t tell them that your parents are away. Say “Mom’s having a shower.” or “Dad’s having a sleep.” To ignore(忽视) the doorbell is not a good idea because sometimes bad people ring doorbells to see if anyone’s at home.

UK kids play ‘conkers’
“Conkers” is a children’s game in the UK. For the last 150 years, British children have collected (收集) the nuts of the horse chestnut tree (马栗树) in September and October. They use these “conkers” to play a game.
You need two players, two conkers and two pieces of string (绳子) about 20 cm long. Each player cuts a hole (洞) in the middle of their conker and pulls a piece of string through the hole. The idea is to find the strongest (最硬的) conker.
One player holds up their string with the conker at the bottom. The other player then hits the first player’s conker as hard as he or she can. Then the first player does the same to the other player.
They keep doing this until one conker breaks(破碎). The strongest conker has won one game, so it is called a “one-er”. If a “one-er” wins another game, it becomes a “two-er” and soon.
Some schools have stopped children from playing conkers because they think the game can be dangerous. Now there are online conkers games, but they are not as good as the real thing!
回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过6个词。
1. When can the children play conkers?
2. Where can kids get the “conkers”?
3. How many players does this game need?
4. If a conker wins four games, what does it become?
5. Why do some school stop children from playing conkers?
Flying is a fast way to travel. But it is a big headache for some people. They can’t help worrying about things like “Is it dangerous if we don’t change our mobile phones to airplane mode (飞行模式)?” Here are some interesting facts about flying.
Why are plane windows round?
It’s for safety. As the airplane flies higher and higher, the atmospheric pressure (气压) outside gets lower and lower. During the flight, the pressure inside the plane becomes greater than the pressure outside. When this happens, square (方形的) windows can break. That’s because having different pressures inside and outside puts stress on the corners of square windows. But rounded corners can spread the pressure more evenly (均匀地) across the window’s surface (表面), making it less likely to break.
What happens when a phone isn’t in airplane mode?
Some passengers believe mobile phones and tablets need to be turned off because they can bring the plane down. However, this is not true. If you don’t change your phone to airplane mode, pilots and air traffic controllers may hear unpleasant sounds in their headphones. This makes it harder for them to communicate. So it’s still best to put your devices (设备) in airplane mode.
1. Why is flying a big headache for some people?2. Is the pressure inside the plane the same as that outside during the flight?
3. Why are round windows less likely to break?
4. What makes it harder for pilots and air traffic controllers to communicate?
5. After reading this passage, if you take the plane next time, what will you do?
“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way to greet other people. But when a person says “How are you?”, they might expect to hear “Fine” in response, even if the other person isn’t actually fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “fine” isn’t really an answer. They are common(常见的)ways of saying “Hello” and “Hi”.
Sometimes people don’t say exactly(确切的)what they mean. For example, when someone asks, “Do you agree?” the other person might be thinking, “No, I don’t agree. I think you are wrong.” This doesn’t sound very polite, so they might say, “I’m not so sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
It’s interesting when people want to finish talking. For example, when someone wants to finish talking with another person on the phone, they may say “I have to go now.” Sometimes they might give an excuse(借口), such as “Someone is at the door” or “I left something on the stove”. The excuse might be real, or it might not. It’s a polite way to stop a conversation and it doesn’t hurt others’ feelings. People don’t always say exactly what they are thinking. That’s just part of the game of language.

Scientists are not alone in the fight against the virus, as technology joins the fight. All kinds of products and apps are giving them a hand. Here are some examples.
Drones (无人机)
Drones have played a major role in disinfection (消毒). Police officers also use them to spread the latest information. What’s more, they use drones to remind people to wear masks or warn them not to gather in large groups.
Robots
Robots are good helpers on the front lines. They do many tasks in hospitals, including sending medicine or meals, doing disinfection and taking patients’ body temperature. This not only greatly reduces the burden for medical workers, but also prevents the cross-infection (交叉感染).
Mini-programmes
Different mini-programmes, or apps that you don’t need to download but can use on Wechat, have also come to help. For example, you can check whether you have travelled alongside the infected patients. Community workers can collect information about people more easily with the help of mini-programmes.
Health QR codes (健康码)
People in more than 100 cities can get their own health QR codes by applying through Alipay or Wechat. This way, they don’t have to fill in information like their names, ages and living addresses over and over again when they enter public places.

Wu Haotian is a ninth-grader from Shanghai. His parents are A medical workers. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, his mom and dad have been on the front line, leaving Wu alone at home.
“I’ve recently been learning to cook beef with curry,” Wu told Shanghai Observer. Facing zhongkao, ①吴不但必须努力学习,而且还要为自己煮饭。“I’ve made a schedule,” Wu said. “It includes when to get up, when to have online classes and when to cook. Following it strictly makes everything go smoothly.”

We need to adjust (调整) our attitudes (态度) to these changes.”
Both Liu and Zhou agreed that it’s necessary to be self-disciplined (自律的) and follow the guidance of teachers during this time. “You should think positively and believe that as long as you’ve tried your best, the results will be fine,” said Zhou.

【推荐3】I’m Lin Yue. In March, 2022, COVID-19 started suddenly in my city. It was so serious that the whole city was locked down. At the very beginning of the lockdown, some old people, especially those living alone, had difficulty getting vegetables. We tried our best to help the olds get through the hard time.
One day, in the community WeChat group, an old man said that he was short of vegetables, so I had an idea of setting up a food bank in the community, and my neighbours were also ready to offer help. To keep social distancing (距离), I used a large box as the food bank, and put it in the public area. Neighbours could give away and get some food there. The large box was quickly filled with vegetables, rice and snacks.
One evening, I saw a bag of vegetables with a note saying, “These are fresh vegetables. Please take them home if you need.” In the WeChat group, an old lady who got the vegetables said, “I was so moved by the good-will (善意), but I only took three tomatoes, because I wanted to leave the rest for those people really in need.”
There were many similar stories in my city during the lockdown. Although COVID-19 keeps us apart, we pull together. Good neighbours are better than distant relatives.
