Nowadays, everyone knows about the serious threat (威胁) that climate change causes to the earth. But the threat doesn’t draw our attention as we go about our everyday lives. The fact is that climate change is affecting (影响) some of our favorite foods and drinks.

Lots of people start their day with a cup of coffee. But as temperatures keep going up, they may have to give up the habit. In many coffee-growing areas, warmer weather has caused illness to coffee plants and made some places too hot for the plants to grow in.

Chocolate is also at risk. If the climate keeps warming up like this, cocoa plants could end up dying out by the year 2050.

Seafood is also an important food for the world. Sadly, with warming oceans and higher levels of CO₂, fish are becoming fewer in number. Every year, the harvest of fish drops by over 1000 million kilograms.

Climate change also affects crops, such as wheat (小麦), corn (玉米) and rice. They are all being threatened by changing temperatures and drought.

Farmers and scientists have been working together to prevent these foods and drinks from disappearing. They have had a lot of success, but it still can’t stop the harm that has been done. If we don’t stop climate change, we may have to find replacements for these foods and drinks in the future.

【推荐1】Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost mention recycling. Recycling in the homes is very important. However, having to recycle often means we already have more products than we need. We are just dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way, but it would be much better if we did not bring so many goods home.
The total amount of packaging(外包装) has increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It is 1/3 of a home’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets, food products are packaged twice with plastic and paper. Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of land because of this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Besides, the plastic from the package puts some creatures in danger, especially birds and fish.
Recycling helps, but the recycling itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such waste in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, few of them have the idea that this cannot continue. For example, supermarkets should encourage customers to reuse their plastic bags.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have been used to the idea that packaging means excellence while anything unpackaged is of poor condition. This is especially true of food. But this idea has spread to other products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how many unnecessary goods are collected. We need to face the waste of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

【推荐2】Plastic straws (吸管) may seem harmless, but they bring dangers to the environment. Because they’re so small, they easily find their way into the ocean. There they can harm animals that try to eat them. They may be small, but the millions of plastic straws that are used and thrown away daily add up to a huge problem. What can you use instead of plastic straws?

Bamboo straws

Fast-growing and plentiful, bamboo is ideal for making straws. Many companies now produce bamboo straws, often without the use of chemicals. Bamboo straws can be washed in a dishwasher or by hand and used again and again. When they do wear out, they break down easily.

Glass straws

Glass straws can also be reused, and if they’re clear, it’s easy to see whether they’re clean or not. They are available in different kinds of lengths, colours and widths, so consumers have many choices.

Bottles that come with straws

Many water bottles come with built-in straws. Although that straw may be made of plastic, you keep it and use it repeatedly. That means it probably won’t end up in ocean any time soon. And it can be cheaper if you choose to fill the bottles with water rather than buying drinks.

No straw

For many drinks, straws aren’t required. People can drink straight out of a cup. And businesses can cut down on the number of straws they use simply by asking people if they want one. Many people seldom notice whether they have a straw or not. Plastic straws are far from the only way to enjoy our favourite drink. Giving them up is an easy way of helping take care of the planet.
