Happy New Year.
You think I’m going to tell you my New Year’s resolutions now, don’t you?
Well, I’m not going to but I am going to tell you the ones I think my family should make. I’m telling you, dear diary, because I don’t think I’d better tell them.
(1) Mum: She should promise to always make my brother stay in his room for hours and hours when he annoys me.
(2) Dad: He should promise to stop correcting my pronunciation. It is very embarrassing.
(3) My brother: He should promise never to annoy me ever, ever again.
(4) The baby: He should promise to get better table manners and not throw his porridge on the wall so we have to clean it up.
(5) My big sister: She should promise never again to say she’s better than I am at football and cricket. I know she isn’t though I haven’t told her that.
(6) Aunt Jessica: She should promise to stop taking photos. I don’t like having to smile all the time and mum nudges (轻推) me if I don’t.
(7) Ms Jenkins: Ms Jenkins should promise not to find so many spelling mistakes in my stories.
Danny

Tamara was born in Mexico. Her parents could not look after her, so she went to live with a family in Manhattan, New York at the age of five. Fifteen years later, Tamara went to university in Long Island. She enjoyed her university life. One day, when she was walking home from class, a student looked at her. “Hello, Adriana!” said the student. “I’m not Adriana,” said Tamara.
This happened to Tamara again and again. It was astonishing and Tamara didn’t know why people kept calling her Adriana. ★ , my first question was “How is he doing?”. My father was connected to a breathing machine and his face was swollen (肿). I tried my best not to cry because I was supposed to explain to him what was happening as the nurses did not speak Spanish. I had never seen my father this way. He looked so weak and different from the strong man I knew. I asked him how he was feeling and he said he was fine. I returned to the hall and I realized that my hero, best friend, and loved one in life was in a dangerous state and at that point anything could happen.
I recalled what happened when I was a child. “I’m going to the store.” he always said. Of course that was my reason to follow him. We would walk to the car, and sometimes if I was lucky, I was able to sit in the front seat. We would arrive at the store and he always said, “Get whatever you want and something for Ana.” Ana is my sister. My dad and I were best friends. He never showed preference with his children, but I just always happened to follow him. It was okay for me to cry when I wanted something because I was his youngest girl and he couldn’t say no to me.
My father spent his whole life giving us the best. Growing up does not necessarily mean that one must keep oneself away from his parents because it is childish. It is time to take action and value the feelings because it is the right thing to do. Life gives us chances to value what is the most important in life.
