This fall, children in the Eixample are a of Barcelona, Spain, have a new way to get to school. They ride their bikes in large groups. This program is called Bicibus or Bike Bus.
The Eixample Bike Bus begins around 8:25 every Friday morning. The path it will follow is always posted ahead of time, so everyone knows where to join. The Bicibus started with only five children, but grew quickly. Now the group grows to 150 or more. With music playing and bike bells ringing, the Bicibus feels like a party. A nine-year-old girl says, “The best part of the Bike Bus is that we ride along and pick up my friends and we ride together.”
It is okay to bike to school in Eixample like that, but it isn’t really safe for kids. There are some bike lanes (车道), but they are often occupied by cars. One of the main roads used by the Eixample Bicibus has about 20, 000 cars and motorcycles to run every day.
Because these are busy streets, the local police are helping by riding in front of Bike Bus and behind it. Parents are hoping that the program will help change ideas about how people can get around in the city. They want the city to create wider, more kid-friendly bike lanes that are separate from cars. They also point out that it also helps cut down on pollution. Recently, pictures and videos of the Eixample Bicibus have got a lot of attention. Many people say what a simple idea it is, and how easy it is to get started.

Alicudi is an island in Italy. It is small, covering about two square miles, and has about 100 people living there. It has no hotels and just one bar. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site (世界遗产) since 2000. Now there are too many goats, and it’s looking for people to keep them. But if you want one, you’ll have to catch it yourself!
Riccardo Gullo, mayor (镇长) of the island, said, “There are six times as many goats as people living here. If you can catch a goat and have a boat to get it off the island, you can keep it!”
The number of goats on Alicudi has increased greatly in the last few years. They have broken walls, damaged gardens and even gone into homes. No one owns the goats.
Tourists like to take pictures with the animals, and Gullo does want some of the goats to stay for that reason—but the number now is just too large.
Gullo said anyone who wants to keep a goat—or up to 50 goats—can send an email to the local government and pay about $17. They’ll then have 15 days to catch them and take them away!

As the world’s number of bees has been falling in recent years, many countries and places are looking for methods to protect these lovely insects. The UK city of Leicester has its own plan in the works.
As part of a city-wide plan to be a greener city within the next 10 years, the city has begun to turn its traditional bus stops into what they are calling Living Roofs or Bee Bus Stops to attract bees and other insects. And they hope to complete all 479 bee-friendly bus shelters by 2022.
A Bee Bus Stop brings the city many advantages (优势), making it a happier and greener place for both animals and people to live in. Different from a traditional one, it has a small garden with flowers and grass on its top. Every bus stop will help support the city’s biodiversity (生物多样性) and collect rainwater that falls on the roof as well. “People are as excited as we are to see the first of Leicester’s Bee Bus Stops across the city taking shape,”says the City Mayor Adam Clarke.
Also, this new modern bus stop will be set with a solar panel (太阳能电池板), to provide lighting and energy for the bus stop below. Besides (除此之外), Bee Bus Stops will help reduce the urban heat island effect (热岛效应) by taking in some heat during the summer months. “The mix of solar power and living roofs is another step forward for our plan to make a greener city by 2030.” Clarke said.
The new bus stops are part of Leicester’s ongoing “Bee Roads” program, which started in 2017. Till now, over 5. 5 kilometers of roadside in the city has been planted with flowers to help make the city a safe place for insects.

Known as the birthplace of kites, Weifang in Shandong Province has a long history of making kites. According to local people, Weifang kite-making can date back to 2,000 years ago. At first, they were used by the army for fighting against its enemies (敌人). During the Ming Dynasty, kites became popular among common people for amusement.
Yang Hongwei, 56 years old, is one of the Weifang kite makers. Born in a kite-making family, Yang often saw kites with bright colors and different shapes in her grandfather’s workshop. “Every time I see these beautiful kites, my bad feelings go away,” said Yang. Yang began to learn the skills from her grandfather at the age of 16. After practicing for ten years, she started her own shop in 1992.
Yang’s kites are very special, because you can see some special paintings about Chinese culture and history on them. For example, she once made a kite with a phoenix (凤凰). It was lined with pictures of 50 famous women from Chinese history on each side. The 50 women were different in looks and clothes.
In Yang’s free time, she travels to different countries including Australia, the United States and so on to tell people stories of Chinese kites and how they are made. “It is an important job of mine, to spread our culture of kites around the world and on to the young people.” she said.

【推荐2】Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic (遗传).
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often bullied (欺负) by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers or sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame (责备) themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget—if you are shy, you are not the only one.

【推荐3】Shyness can be an unhappy feeling. What makes people shy? Scientists say such things as genetics (遗传), life experiences, and environment can influence whether a person is shy. For example, in some families, everybody seems to be shy.
How do people overcome (克服) shyness? This is what Gilbert tells us. “When I started off trying to get over being shy, I decided to do little steps at a time, including practicing smiling and saying hi to people. And it worked for me.” But shyness is not the kind of thing that most people can get over overnight. Overcoming shyness takes time and needs practice.
Here are some tips given by scientists.
Think of what to talk about before you leave home. Prepare things to talk about before you’re in a social situation. For example, if you know your classmates are interested in an upcoming event, learn about it so you can join in the conversations.
Let people know you’re shy. If you’re shy, just show it. Instead of letting people guess, tell them the truth. Explain that you are shy and feel nervous but enjoy talking to people.
Make things easy for the other person. Remember, you’re not the only shy person around. Do what you think might help others feel good—for example, say hello or smile.
Pick one social skill to practice at a time. Start simply. For example, smile or be the first person to say hi. Choose skills you feel comfortable enough with to practice for a day, a week, a month, or even a year.
1. According to the scientists, which of the following is NOT the reason that makes people shy?A.Family relationship. | B.Genetics. | C.Environment. |
A.explain the steps of overcoming shyness |
B.show how people get over shyness |
C.introduce a shy girl called Gilbert |
A.Correctly. | B.Suddenly. | C.Slowly. |
