We live on Earth. It’s our home. But how much do you know about it? Let me tell you something about our Earth.

The Earth is not flat as we see but it is like a huge sphere in the space. Like the other seven planets (行星), the Earth is running around the Sun. It’s the third nearest one to the Sun. It takes the Earth about 365 days to run around the Sun.

At the same time, the Earth is going around itself. If you are in space, you can see lots of white clouds over the surface (表面) of the Earth. Through the clouds, you can see the blue colour of the oceans, and the brown colour of the land. About 70% of the Earth is covered with water. Why do we have day and night? When the half of the Earth is facing the Sun, it’s daytime. As the Earth turns, and this half is away from the Sun, night is coming. And it’s daytime for the other half.

1. How many planets are running around the Sun?
A.Seven.B.Eight.C.Nine.D.Ten.
2. The underlined word “sphere” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A.ballB.hairC.bagD.rock
3. When ________, it’s daytime.
A.the Earth is away from the SunB.the Earth is running around the Sun
C.the half of the Earth is facing the SunD.the half of the Earth is away from the Sun
4. Where can you read this text (文本)?
A.In a storybook.B.In a science magazine.
C.In a cartoon book.D.In a fiction (科幻) story.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了科学家们探索木卫二上是否存在生命的问题。

【推荐1】“Is there life out there?” is a question which scientists are trying to answer. They look for life in space. In recent years, they have turned their attention to Europa, the sixth closest moon of Jupiter (木星).

Europa is a little smaller than the moon and is covered by ice. Its surface is too cold for anything to live there. Scientists want to know what lies under the ice, for that is where any life on Europa would most likely be.

For years, scientists believed all life on the earth depended on the sun. The discovery of chemosynthetic (化学合成的) life has changed scientists’ idea—planets with oceans (海洋) and hydrothermal vents (热液喷口) might also support life.

Europa does have oceans. In fact, Europa appears to have more oceans than the earth does. The ice on this moon’s surface covers what appears to be moving water. Do these oceans have hydrothermal vents? Scientists do not know yet. If they do, the oceans of Europa might support life. Only a space travel to Europa would tell for certain.

Scientists are studying the closest possible environment they can find on the earth: Lake Vostok. Like Europa’s oceans, Lake Vostok is miles under a frozen surface. It does not receive direct sunlight, either.

So like Europa, the lake cannot support photosynthetic (光合作用的) life. If scientists find life in the lake, it would support the idea that there might also be life on Europa.

In the universe, there is the sun, the moon, the earth and many stars. Through our geography lessons, we know the earth goes around the sun, and the moon goes round the earth. We have day and night because the earth keeps turning all the time. When our part of the earth turns to the sun, it is day. When our part of the earth turns away from the sun, it is night. The other part of the earth is always contrary.

Just because the moon is closer to the earth than the sun, it looks much bigger than the sun. Big things will look smaller when they are further, and small things also look bigger when they are nearer.

The sun is big enough to give out very strong light. The moon can’t give any light at all, but it looks quite bright, too. Why? In fact, the light from the moon comes from the sun. The moon looks much bigger and brighter than the stars. But in fact, the stars are much bigger and brighter than the moon. They look smaller than the moon also because they are further away from the earth.

Earth is so important because living things and people can only live on the earth. And some countries have sent astronauts to the space to learn more about the universe. At 9:00 a.m. on October 15th, 2003, Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei was sent up to space. He stayed there for 21 hours. It was the first time for Chinese to get into space.

1. When our part of the earth turns away from the sun, the other part of the earth is ________.
A.nightB.dayC.windyD.Sunday
2. We find the sun is ________ than the moon because it is ________ to us.
A.bigger; fartherB.smaller; closer
C.bigger; closerD.smaller; farther
3. When did the astronaut from our country return to the earth?
A.On November 15th, 2002.B.On October 16th, 2003.
C.On May 15th, 2004.D.On October 15th, 2003.
4. Which of the best title of the passage?
A.The moon goes around the earth, and the earth goes round the sun.
B.The sun gives out strong light while the moon can’t.
C.All the living things and people can only live on the earth.
D.The sun, the moon and the earth.
