When you’re a teenager, it seems that every time you say “I want to …”, someone answers “No, you can’t”. Also, no part of your life is safe from the prying (窥视的) eyes of your parents.
A 15-year-old girl, Debbie says, “My dad always wants to know where I am, and what time I’m going to be home.”
Most parents do that. Do they have to know everything? They should give us more freedom. Young people further complain that their parents do not respect them. When something goes wrong, more parents just don't believe in their children. Without asking why, they think their kids are wrong. And not many parents allow their kids to choose for themselves. Yes, it is true that your parents sometimes treat you like a little child. But remember that not too long ago you were really a child. Your parents still remember those childish mistakes that you used to make. They want to protect you though you do not want them to do so.
So, if you want to get more freedom, please try to understand your parents and do not lie to them. Try a more friendly way. If you want them to allow you to stay out late, don't just say, “All the other kids can stay out late.” Tell them as much as you can about what you want to do and where you'll be and why it's important for you to stay out late. Then they might just say “yes”.
1. Who always wants to know where Debbie is?2. What do young people want to get from their parents?
3. What do young people further complain according to the passage?
4. If your parents don’t allow you to play with your friends outside on weekend, what should you do? Write 30 words or more.

Tongcheng City in East China’s Anhui Province is culturally rich. There are many famous historical sites. Among them, a two-meter-wide alley(小巷), or Liu Chi Xiang in Chinese, is a very popular one. Lots of people come to visit it every year. There is a touching story about the alley.
In the Qing Dynasty, a high-ranking official(高级官员) named Zhang Ying received a letter from his family back in his hometown one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family had a disagreement with their neighbor, the Wu family over the house boundary(边界). Zhang’s family wrote the letter hoping that he could put pressure on the Wu family. However, Zhang wrote a letter back saying,
“Writing a letter from home, miles away, just for a wall,
What harm is there in giving them one meter?
Looking at the ten-thousand-mile-long Great Wall,
Long gone is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang.”
After reading the letter, Zhang’s family members realized that the relationship with their neighbor was much more important than the wall. They moved their wall one meter back for their neighbor. The Wu family was deeply touched by what the Zhang family did and moved their wall one meter back as well. It created a two-meter-wide alley between the houses.
Hundreds of years later, the story of Liu Chi Xiang still tells us that kindness and tolerance(宽容) can take away walls between persons, families, and nations, and they can create love as well.

Most of the time, people do it because they want to protect friendship or they don't want to hurt someone. Here are some ways they do it.
Lying to hide something. People often lie because they want to hide something from someone. For example, Jack wants to go out to play soccer, but he tells a lie to his parents to say that he will go to the library to study.
Giving false excuses.Sometimes people lie because they don't want to do something. For example, someone invites you to a party. You think it will be boring,so you say you're busy.
Lying to make someone feel good. Often we don't tell the truth to make someone feel good. For example, your friend cooks dinner for you, but it tastes terrible. Do you say so? No, you probably say, “Um, this is delicious”.
Lying to hide bad news. Sometimes we don't want to tell someone bad news. For example, you have just had a terrible day at work, but you don't want your family to worry about you. So if your parents ask you about your day, you will just say everything is fine.

I’m Nancy. I love my parents, and they love me, too. But sometimes their love gives me much pressure. I’m already 15 years old. In the eyes of my parents, however, I’m still a baby. They never allow me to hang out with my friends. They worry that I may learn something bad. Every Sunday, they go to the football center with me, although it is only five minutes’ walk from my home. Once I saw my mother reading my diary. I was angry, but she didn’t think it was a big deal. I talked about my problems with my best friend. But I learned she had the same problems.

For many of us, the idea of a family is a lot narrower than it used to be. Today children go away to college, and take up jobs wherever chances seem greatest. So instead of growing up in a family with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, many of us are truly connected only to our parents and brothers.
Many kids today know little of the lives of their relatives and don’t care deeply about them.
Whether we realize it or not, the feeling of being disconnected makes people feel lonely. “People need to feel connected,” says Joy Browne, a doctor in the U.S. “And they will do it in the easiest ways.” When family members aren’t connected, what could be easier than forming a connection to famous people?
This isn’t something unusual, of course. People cried when Mei Yanfang died in 2003. It’s natural and in most ways harmless to feel that way, but that’s unhealthy, because the relationships aren’t two-way (相互的).
For that, we need to stay connected to our own families. Parents can help by telling their children stories about their grandparents, aunts and cousins so that children can know their latest activities and interests.
We can keep connected with our relatives by using technology. It’s easy to send E-mail to granddad better yet. A week of relaxing vacation can be a great way to tie up family ties. And when a bad thing happens, no one can be as helpful as your relatives. Because no matter how much we cry for the famous people, they can’t be there to cry for us.

3. The relationships between the famous people and us aren’t two-way, are they?

We all have habits that we want to give up. These are habits which are not good for us in some way or another. A habit is an activity that we have got used to. It’s not easy to break a bad habit because we have got used to it and it has become convenient.
We are so used to our bad habits that most of the time we even don’t realize that we have them until someone points them out to us. So the first step that will lead to changing a bad habit is to accept the fact that is not good for you.
Since you know you have developed a bad habit, it’s best to find out why you developed it in the first place. Find out the reason behind it, as that will help you in understanding why you’re so willing to perform that act. There is nothing to feel afraid of. You have to face it and then give it up.
There are habits that people have carried with them for years and it will surely take some time to give them up. However, breaking a bad habit is a better choice than letting it grow into an addiction (瘾). Try giving up a bad habit, and you’ll surely make progress and improve yourself in many ways. How to Write a Good Article Last week, I failed my English wiring test again. I am very sad. How to write a good article? Do you have any advice? |
Writing is to express your thought through language. Here we have to pay attention to key things: language and thought. For a successful writing activity to happen, both are necessary. When writing in our mother tongue, we spend almost no time in considering language. But when writing in a foreign language, we have to learn the language well. So it is the most important to learn the vocabulary (词汇) and grammar of this language before you write. -By He Yun |
Of course, it is necessary to learn the language well, but when you begin to learn to write, that's to say, you have already got familiar (熟悉) with the vocabulary and grammar, and can express simple ideas in this language. So you have to pay attention to the ideas: what do you want to express in the article? You have to think how to choose the materials well first, and then think about how to organize them well before writing. -By Zhou Jian |
I had a similar experience to you. Two years ago, I never passed my writing test. But now my teacher often praises me for my writing. Maybe my advice is useful for you. I used to find it difficult to write complete sentences, so I paid special attention to usages of common words and sentence patterns. Then I made my own sentences like them. And I kept diaries in English every day, which helped me a lot. -By Yang Guang |
