One day, while looking through a flower list that she often ordered from, a picture of a plant immediately caught her eye. She had never seen a flower like it before. “I have to have it,” she said to herself, and she immediately ordered it. When it arrived, she found a place to plant it. She planted it at the bottom of a stonewall at the back of her yard. It grew vigorously, with beautiful green leaves all over it. Day after day, she continued to take care of it, but there were no flowers.
One morning, as she stood looking at the plant, she felt disappointed. She wanted to know why her plant had not bloomed.
However, at this moment, her disabled neighbor invited her to his yard and said, “Thank you so much! You can’t imagine how much I have enjoyed the flowers that you planted.” The young woman walked through the gate into her neighbor’s yard. She saw that on the other side of the wall the plant was full of flowers.
They were, indeed, the most beautiful flowers she had ever seen. The plant had grown up through the crevices (裂缝) in the wall.
Just because you can’t see the results of your labor, it does not mean that there isn’t any fruit.

On the fifth day, a tragedy(悲剧) happened. I put my face so close to the glass box that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after the earthquake, they never tried to rebuild the tunnels. I felt sorry when I watched them give up.
My mom said that the ants simply couldn’t stand that their tunnels were gone. Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.
Years later, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work.
Adversity(逆境) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. If a tunnel is gone, we must build another. Unlike the ants, we shouldn’t give up building our own world.

My parents advised I learn from my grandmother, who later gave me her recipe(食谱) and instruction as wall. After two years’ practice, I was able to make delicious bread. I have come to realize making bread means a lot to me although it takes a long time.
To make bread, others usually use quick rise yeast(酵母), but I don’t. Every Saturday morning, after mixing proper amount of water with flour, sugar etc, I take time to wait for the dough to rise. This is my way to slow down and smell the roses.
Baking does require great patience. In my hands, the dough is slowly growing. It’s becoming softer. I can feel the change, which connects me to something quite different from the modern way of living. To me, making bread is a push against our culture of convenience. It certainly takes more time than buying bread from a store, but I enjoy it.
I’ve stuck with my grandmother’s recipe without making any change. Now this tradition has continued for years. Sometimes, in order to fit it in, I have to change my schedule. But I have never considered giving it up.
By the time my children get home from school, the bread has been baked and cooled. They step into the house and the first thing they do is to take a deep breath of the warm, honeyed air. My bread-baking has also helped them to slow down and understand the value of taking their time and leading an unhurried life.

One morning, when Einstein was about to go fishing with his friends, his father stopped him and said, “Einstein, you like playing all day so much that you failed your exam. I’m worried about your future.”
“What are you worrying about? Jack and Robert also failed, but don’t they still get to go fishing? ”
“My boy, you can’t think like that,” his dad said. “There is a story that people tell in our hometown. Listen to it now.”
“There were two cats playing on the top of a house. One cat fell down the chimney (烟囱) while holding the other cat. When the two cats climbed out of the chimney, one of the cats had soot (烟灰) on his face, but the other cat’s face was clean. Seeing the soot-faced cat, the clean cat thought its own face must be dirty, so it quickly ran to the riverside and washed its face. The soot-faced cat saw the clean-faced cat and thought its own face was also clean, so it just went down the street happily.”
“Einstein, no one can be your ‘mirror (镜子)’. You have to think for yourself. If you just follow others, you will never learn.”
