We have a small vegetable garden in our school and we plant our favorite plants there. All my classmates work hard at it to make the plants grow better.
However, I notice there are so many weeds (野草) . I am deeply worried about the weeds growing taller and taller, and they will make our plants grow slowly. So I often go and do something to help our plants grow faster.
One day, during the lunch break, I went to the corner of the garden and pulled the weeds as usual. However, I forgot about the time. When I was busy pulling the weeds, I didn’t know that the class had already started and no one noticed I was the only one left there.
Later, when I returned to the classroom, my teacher Miss Smith gave me a serious look.
“Peter, you’re late again. We started the class ten minutes ago.”
“Sorry, Miss Smith.” I realized I had made a big mistake.
After class, my teacher asked me why I was late for her class. I told her that I forgot about the time because I was pulling the weeds at the small vegetable garden.
“Peter, you should understand the importance of being on time. You really need to keep the school schedule in mind.”
I thought my teacher was right and I should try to balance my studies and other activities better.
“Thanks, Miss Smith. I have understood what you said. I will still help out in the garden and I am sure I will never be late for class and I will always follow my school schedule.”
We both gave each other a big smile.

I often dreamed about Pisa when I was a boy. I read about the famous building called the leaning (倾斜的) tower of Pisa. But when I read the word Pisa, I was thinking of pizza. I thought that this tower was a place to buy pizza. It must be the best place to buy pizza in the world, I thought.
Many years later, I finally saw the leaning tower itself. I knew them, but it was Pisa, not pizza. But there was still something special about it for me. The tower got its name because it really leans to one side. Some people want to try to fix it. They are afraid it may fall over and they don’t like it will lean over the city.
I don't think it’s a good idea to try to fix it. The tower probably will not fall down. It’s six hundred years old. Why should anything happen to it now? And, if you ask me. I like what it looks like. To me, it’s a very human kind of learning. Nothing is perfect, it seems to say.
And who cares? Why do people want things to be perfect? Imperfect things may be more interesting. Let’s take the tower in Paris. Why is it so famous? There are many other older, more beautiful towers in Italy. But Pisa tower, is the most famous. People come from all over the world to see it.

Science Night |
It’s almost time for Science Night. I need a partner. Who should I ask? I have three friends who all want to help. How can I choose just one for the task? |
My best friend Jule is fun to be around. But she’s as chatty as a bird. When she starts to talk-Just watch out! I can’t get in a single word. |
Still, that might work for Science Night. She’d show our project to the crowd. Jule’s voice would boom out(发出低沉的声音)like a drum. I wouldn’t mind if she were extra loud! |
And then there’s Dan, who’s really shy. But wise as an owl-he’s so smart! He’d help with the thinking for the job. He wouldn’t talk, but he’d do his part. |
But what about Shel, who’s good at art? He paints and draws and sculpts so well. Our project would look great-no doubt! I’m sure I should be asking Shel. |
How can I choose just one from three? I need them all! I’m feeling sick. I’m as dizzy(晕眩的)as a spinning top(陀螺). When trying to choose, I just can’t pick! |
But wait-why not ask them all to help? A group of four is better than one. I’d love to work with all my friends. In such a group, we’d have such fun! |
The work could be shared by four of us. By me and Shel and Dan and Jule. We’d fit together like puzzle(拼图)pieces. And take the grand prize in the school! |

Flapping her wings one morning, Bluebird flew from her tree to the blue lake. Then she bathed in the water three times. After each bath, she sang, “Blue water. Still water. I went in. I am blue.” Bluebird repeated this every morning. On the third day, she came out of the lake with beautiful blue feathers.
Now Coyote was a trickster (骗子) —and hungry too. He stayed behind Bluebird’s tree for a long time every day and watched her go to the lake. He pretended (伪装) to be interested in everything she did. He wanted Bluebird for lunch, but he was afraid of the blue water. On the third morning, Coyote saw Bluebird come out of the lake with beautiful blue feathers. Impressed he sat next to Bluebird’s tree and waited for her. When she returned, he asked, “How did you get blue feathers? I want to be blue like the mountains too.” Bluebird didn’t believe Coyote, but she taught him how to bathe three times each morning and how to sing her song. Coyote did what she said, and after three days of bathing in the lake, his white fur turned deep blue.
Convinced (确信的) that blue fur was even more beautiful than blue feathers, Coyote forgot all about being hungry. He ran as fast as he could to the top of the hill. Standing on his back legs, he raised his front legs off the ground and howled. But Coyote slipped (滑到) and rolled down the hill. He couldn’t stop himself, and the dust and dirt covered his new blue fur. He rolled and rolled until he hit into Bluebird’s tree heavily. Before we went ahead and dug up the grass, we spent some time thinking about where it would work best. At last, we chose an old sandbox(沙坑)in our front yard to become our garden.
We dreamed about a lively garden with lots of vegetables. We asked many people what we should do to turn this sandbox into a space, then plants can grow in it. And they gave us lots of ideas. My sister was the most knowledgeable, so we listened mostly to her. At first, Mike made a wood fence(栅栏)and I painted it with the kids. We chose a darker color because it would fit our light grey house.
Next, Mike dug 17 holes. Then we filled them with soil(土壤). It was still too cold to plant anything, so for days I just stared out the window at these holes. To me, it looked much too untidy. I advised to fill those holes back and dig new ones. This time we ended up with 10. Much better.
Over the next few weeks, I worked on getting everything planted in my garden. I started by planting green onion. But I was too excited and planted it too early. Right away it was clear that it wasn’t going to survive. I had to give it up and try something else. Then my next door neighbor gave me red roses to put in my garden. A few days later we went to a greenhouse and came back not with green onion but peppers, tomatoes and so on. Clearly the vegetable and flower garden was slowly becoming our dream garden. Oh well!
I love the way it turned out. This garden will always remind me of my sister.
